I am really surprised by your surprise - this is the way an automatic car wash works all over the world, isn't it? Here in Sweden we've had this type of car wash for at least 50 years (that is when I started to use them), but probably longer than so. There is also a brushless version; it works with high pressure water only (supposed to be milder to the car paint).

This is probably the price for 5 passes. Many service stations offer a discount if you buy several at once.
