    My question is, who spends the money to put in a large deck and DOESN’T seal the wood?! Especially in such an extremely rainy environment? Such a shame. Well done you for having got it looking THIS good.

    @@pete6790 Looks right to me, water to flow away from the house and not sit trapped. It's the type of wood pattern that irks me, more place for water to be trapped when dust/dirt/leaves gets in those grooves which means more maintenance required. As for why people do not seal it to begin with, I think is because they think "Pressure Treated" specifically "Treated" means no maintenance required.

  • @Dan.Chaytor

    Good job Sid. In answer to your question about the boards potentially being the wrong way round. The grooves were originally intended to stop water pooling on the joists, but people installed them upside down with the grooves up for tread. Now occasionally seeing decking with grooves on both sides. Personally I think grooves up is a bad idea as it allows more areas for dirt to gather and mould to grow.

  • @darkknight145

    @darkknight145

    2 жыл бұрын

    Exactly! as they are laid they will hold water and allow the algae to grow more readily. Grooves down gives the underside more surface area allowing the decking to dry quicker and reducing algae. But, the decking does look better with the grooves up.

  • @IlSqueak

    @IlSqueak

    Is that true? I mean it makes sense, as you describe it for grooves down, but surely grooves up is for traction with bare feet and sandals etc.? Maybe there is a market for boards a quarter inch thicker and grooves on both sides? Also you've got a new subscriber.

    Or just install a WPC decking and be done with it. I really like wood grain but if you live in a place with lots of rain and humidity, outdoor wood decking is a bad idea, unless you are willing to spend a lot of hours maintaining it regularly.

    Ah yeah, I totally remember this house! That's some CRAZY grooved out decking they chose to go with, eh? Looks like what they need to do now it's clean is sand it down (get rid of the grooves) and refinish it. I imagine the grooves lend the thinking that it creates better grip in such scenarios, but it does NOT, it just becomes a nightmare to tend. It REALLY did come out lovely though, Sid. I know to your trained moss hound eyes it's not that great, but that's also the beauty of wood. The ageing. Well done fellers!

    I would suggest getting a flow regulator for the wand. That way you can reduce the pressure but still get in close to the grooves. I find holding the wand at a distance or trying to use a wider tip isn’t the same as using a lower pressure.
