Great idea using the car wash! I found a really nice print, free rug as a left over from a garage sale, BUT it smelled of urine! Took it home anyway. Laid it on my gravel front yard. Hosed it down with water and sprinkled it heavily with baking soda and left it over night. Next morning, I again hosed it down then saturated it with white vinegar and left that on all day and night. Again hosed it down. Repeated the whole process again. It worked! No more urine smell! Air dried.

Also look up professional rug cleaning supplies and they have a special urine treatment that gets all the yellow out and the smell. While you're at it, get a long handle squeegee so you can squeeze the water out. All the best

Over the year. S I've picked up many rugs and did the same thing on the driveway.Or over offense if I didn't have the driveway and let it sit in the sun and dry and then after a strive acumen to fluff it up and turn around and sell it ! Everything's expensive nowadays and it would be shameful to throw a rug out that can be washed easy enough.Good job car wash is Great

The issue with picking up stuff off the side of the road is cleaning it doesn't get rid of all critters. Especially bed bugs. Heat is the only way, and it has to be over 140° or they'll still live. Pick up stuff at your own risk. You never know what comes home with you. And for a bed bug treatment, you're looking easily at anywhere 1500-3000. Pest control companies make alot of money from people just like this.

What do you use to stop it from yellowing as it dries? What do you do to deodorize and remove any bacteria and harmful germs? There’s a lot more to cleaning a rug then just one round of car wash soap. You first need to rinse as much of any dirt and dust from both the front and back of the rug. Then you need to scrub on both sides of the rug, using an anti bacterial soap with a deodorizer. Then rinse both sides well. Then you go in with another sanitizer which takes out any bacteria that the anti bacterial soap couldn’t handle doing that on both sides. Rinse that out on both sides. Then go in with the non yellowing product on both sides and rinsing it ALL OUT on both sides. And then the starch that prevents the corners from curling. And sure your rolling it then stepping on a board to ring it out is great for a first attempt. But you really need a carpet spinner. Otherwise you are going to get a moldy rug before it can dry.

I use a pump sprayer with laundry disinfectant to soak the rugs in after I've washed them; then sun dry them at home. The extra step makes me feel alright with bringing used rugs in. I normally wash rugs at home on the lawn pretty much the same way the car wash is used. Just put a tarp under the rug so dirt/grass doesn't soak into & get embedded in the rug. Use a biodegradable soap, (Dr.Bronners work well & come in different scents or Dawn dish soap, especially if there is something that needs to be degreased,) if you're washing where the soap is not going into a treatment drain. The laundry disinfectant is used as a rinse basically, so very minimal pollutants make it to the ground so it is safe to use even if there is run off.

Good idea, just note that most car wash soaps have a wax to it to help seal in your cars paint and protect against bug guts. Just double-check that before using the bays soap. Otherwise, you may end up making your rug feel like a mess

The solutions they use to clean your vehicle in car washes are so full of solvents that you are actually breaking these rugs down. Then, you have to realize that car washes often just reclaim/recycle the water they use for other cars. So what you’re doing here and not seeing is that you’re soaking up any number of questionable chemicals as well as the ones being washed off of other vehicles -and that includes vehicle fluids, road kill remnant’s, commercial truck chemicals and road grime. The water is not very clean and it’s not intended or very safe to use on a carpet people will use in a home where babies crawl on it, kids sit or lay on and people walk across it barefoot. It is probably esthetically satisfying but if you knew what you were doing, you’d understand why it’s better, safer and cheaper just to have your own garden hose with a power sprayer/power washer, clean water source and a bucket of commercial powder laundry detergent. Be safe!
