Clean Handling & Shot Stopping | Real Salt Lake Full Training Session | Pro Gk

In todays episode,
I was fortunate enough to be given field access to Real Salt Lakes training session during their Pre-Season in Arizona. Goalkeeper coach Todd Hoffard is not only one of the brightest goalkeeping minds that I have come across, but his style of coaching is something that I’ve tried to emulate. From a coaching perspective, what stood out most for me was his clean distribution with both feet, the way in which the progressions in his session flowed seamlessly, and his subtle, yet substance based coaching tips. Rather than nitpicking every mistake or dropped ball, I felt that Todd had created an environment and culture within his group that allowed for growth and development.
For the goalkeepers watching this, I hope that you saw the standard at which professional goalkeepers are held to. At the next level, you must be sharp at all times. Even if you’ve caught the first 50 balls, if you drop 51 & 52, you’re going to need to rebound quickly to make sure that rep 53 and on are clean and at a professional standard.
I really enjoyed bringing this session to you guys! Even if it isn't me coaching, my goal with my channel is to share as much top quality information with you guys to help improve yourself as a goalkeeper, as well as a coach! Hope this episode did that for you guys!
Lastly, I am a co-host on a goalkeeping podcast called "Inside the 18".
If you guys had some interest in that I would really appreciate it if you guys checked it out! We're live on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and Stitcher! Thank you guys!

Second goalie has too much spring in his footwork. He is in the air many times as the ball is being kicked. Would make me nervous as a supporter of his team

@@JorgeMorgenstern It's the difference between, "hopping", and, "gliding". Their starter has soft feet, fast feet. I agree.

Is Omar safe to say that the American goalkeeper trainer prefers training in a closed context (2 or 3 actions in the exercise) than in an open context? I would like to know your opinion and if you are also a defender of that preference. Or do you later let the open context be realized with the team for example reduced games?

I loved this session, I coach for Southern Arizona Soccer Club here in Tucson and truth be told I work with youth female goalkeepers (06-03) We do a lot of similar work. Do you think that it is okay at that age to be doing drills like this? What do you recommend we focus on?

  • @airdub100

Absolutely! The drills Todd did, were nothing special or difficult. It's what you demand out of your players. No, they're not going to hold every ball, due to hand size/strength, but have them try as much as possible! Read your session, if they're making to many mistakes or it seems to difficult, change it up. I often change sessions on the fly, if I see something to key in on! Keep it up coach!

I think you are referring to a smother. The basic purpose of the smother is to use the momentum of the low shot and catch it and smother the ball so it doesn't escape

Good sessions by the coach but, how he was saying he's not worried about the whole goal and just that little one really doesn't put the realism in the training other than that quality sessions
