Probably the most beautiful opening to any opera.

Monteverdi himself would've highly approved and I think loved this performance. Figueras sings with beauty but never detracts from the music itself. Savall listens to Monteverdi's own instructions. I think this is the most accurate interpretation of what Monteverd actually wanted

you're so right. audiences nowadays expect every technical detail to be perfect - it just wasn't the case back then. tuning was something totally different to the ears of people in 1607. it's the little "imperfections" that can make the music so much more expressive

Non si può vedere "permesso" scritto minuscolo... A parte questo, il soprano sembra consapevole di cantare ed interpretare il primo vero personaggio dell'Opera, nientemeno 'La Musica', e coinvolge fin quasi alla commozione l'ascoltatore, dando ai versi creati dallo Striggio su ispirazione del grande Guarino, la risonanza solenne sublimata dalla musica di Monteverdi. Uso mirabile della percussione e dei tromboni da parte degli esecutori diretti da Jordi Saval nel prologo.

Monteverdi specifically cautioned his players NOT to over-ornament their parts in this work: he instructed them to play "as simply and correctly as possible, and not with many florid passages or runs." Savall, almost alone among modern conductors, follows this conservative instruction from the composer.

I get the feeling that this is a very accurate representation of baroque performance. Also, Canadian Brass have done some great recordings of Monteverdi's pieces as instrumentals for all brass. I'm not sure if Monteverdi intended to write for all brass ensembles, but regardless they sound fantastic.

I'm sorry, but I don't agree with you. This is historically informed singing technique. In the Baroque era the singers didn't use to do the vibrato, because it was considered as an embelishment to use rarely . Without vibrato, for the singer, is very difficult to be always in tune, and the audience should forgive some little errors. This performance of Monserrat is perfect in my opinion. May she rest in peace!

@@michauui the role was initially sung by a castrati, they don’t have a lot of any vibrato and it would be difficult for them to use it. So if you would want you replicate this effect you would suppress your vibrato or use a counter tenor who often don’t have a lot of vibrato either.

There is no name. It is a ritornello that Monteverdi intended to symblise the power of music. It appears again at the opening of Act V.

@@jasonhurd4379 it is repeated also at the end of act 2, so it kind of signifies everything that happens above ground - the last thing you hear before going to Hades and again the first thing you hear when you return.

+Sarthak Rastogi No tabs or proper score for that part, that is Basso Continuo, if you find the score of the opera you'll notice that in these recitativos (recitative parts) there are only two staves: one for the singer and one for the Bass. Upon the bass staff you'll notice some numbers, these are figurations for Lute-like or keyboard instruments about what chords to play (in any preferred position) to fill the harmony implied by the music. To play these continuo figurations you just have to learn how to read them, you'll easily find some material on the internet concerning this. It's guided improvisation on a bass line basically.
