In my opinion, It's similar to the invention of Calculator. Invention of Calculator didn't kill mathematicians, though it helped them to evolve the whole math. So with Devin as Varun mentioned, Software Engineers would have to move up the ladder to solve more important problems while Devin handles all the other parts like writing code.

But there aren't many mathematicians today, or maybe it's not a very prominent massy field to be in! Same will happen with software engineers. The amount of software engineers will be too much and demand will be too little.

Calculator cannot improve over time. How is it same? Humans also have a limit to how much they can hold in their brain no matter how amazing, but AI, even if it improves at 1%/year. A single AI unit beat any human in all tasks within next 100 years. That's inevitable. But I agree with your second part of statement, but that is not because AI is dumb but you as a business owner wanting something specific and personal. If AI was the business owner, then wouldn't it want things done in a certain way too?

If anyone's from Vfx industry here thinks how will things play out for them, it's exactly as Varun said. Everyone needs to move one step up. If you know 3D Modelling , learn Rigging. If you know rigging, Learn Animation. If you know Roto, learn Composting. If you know composting, learn Fx and simulations. You need to learn about a new department every year to stay relevant and when AI tools are here with full potential, Studios will still hire people who know how to use softwares. It's just they'll only choose the ones who are good in everything.

Most of software engineering jobs are mundane - to plan, create tickets, estimation & complete tasks (bug fixing, feature enhancements). We dont talk scaling & s*** the whole day, only couple of staff engineers do that but still its too slow. How much time will it take you to read & digest a new engineering book, probably a couple of months, give the same book to generative AI, it can grind & drink the book in a few seconds/ minutes (depends on computational power). And AI is not just a software engineer, it can anything, so overall its limitless and scary too at the same time. Mark my words, software engineering domain is coming to an end in next 5 years. Already there is recession, and market demand is too low. We are going to see bloodbath in transformational phase while economy gets adjusted.
