I have to say, I’ve been studying psychology and criminology, but the way you break it all down is AMAZING, for lack of a better word, sometimes I feel academic studies, while amazingly informative and enlightening can also be deterring due to the complexity of the language which when one thinks about, should be the other way around.... Thank you for your work.

This is a very clear cut and upbeat representation of the classical and positivist schools of criminology and has really helped consolidate my understanding, thank you!

Great explanation of these two schools of thought. I find aspects of both interesting. The main issue I see with the Positivist School is that it could lead to lesser punishments for people from low income communities of color VS their white peers. While sociological factors and learned behavior are important considerations, there is something about giving a lesser sentence based on life circumstances that I see as problematic. Equally problematic is tying the judge's hands to mandatory minimum sentencing laws. A catch-22 that warrants a lot more conversation.

This video helped me to understand how the different theories are offering reasons for criminal behavior and why people commit crimes. The way you explained the different concepts and reasons for criminal behavior was GREAT. Thank you I will be searching for other videos you have.

Hello Dr. Jason, Thank you for such an explicit summary of Criminological theories, what book will you recommend to me for criminology theory? And can you please make a video that shows the difference between Criminology theories and Criminal Justice theories. Thank you.

I often heard this theory that he was racist but I have to disagree. He made the mistake, as you mentioned already, of studying criminals in prison. That also means that he did not have control over who went to prison or not. At that time, the 800s, in Italy there was still a lot of racism and there will continue to be up until after the fascism period. This means that he studies only those put into prison by the police officers which means that if anyone was racist it would have been the police and not necessarily him. He might have been racist too but we cannot theorise it from the fact that he said that all black people were criminals basically as it was beyond his control.
