I think there is something very important to say: Jinyoung (aka the leader and producer), never studied music, therefore he does not write in scores, however he can read them.

That's important in one more way - that he isn't limited by knowledge but he really composes what he feels and what he wants to express. I mean, when the one played on the piano "every kpop sound" and then "Jinyoung sound", it definetly sound different and it gave the song more emotions. Jinyoung isn't limited by the sound that every kpop song makes because he hasn't learn it. He makes his own sounds.

if I'm not mistaken he composed a song when he was a trainee (Baby Good Night). After members and staff heard the song he began studying composing. He talked about it last year in an interview for a KBS show.

B1A4 get overlooked so much by the international kpop fandom nowadays, it's really sad because they are so consistent with releasing good music. They're one of the first groups I got into and they're still one of my top 5 boy groups, I can always trust them to give me good songs because they've rarely disappointed me. My favourite title tracks from them are probably this one, Tried To Walk, Sweet Girl and Lonely.

ActuallyAnanya I'm confused as to what you mean by 'overlooked by the international kpop fandom' because idk if you're referring to international banas as opposed to k-banas or if you're referring to all international kpop fans in general. Because if you're saying they're overlooked by everyone internationally that's a bit of a weird thing to say. I mean if I dont like a group or their music it doesn't mean I'm overlooking them it just means they don't appeal to me. And generally if a group doesn't have a lot of recognition internationally it's simply because their music simply doesn't appeal. You can't classify everyone having a different taste as them overlooking B1A4.

sublime_angel I'm saying many new international kpop fans don't even know B1A4 exists. Of course the market is a lot more saturated now than it was in 2013 when I got into kpop, so it's to be expected, but I can still say that's unfortunate. You may not like their music, but there are so many who potentially would that just don't know about them. And what you said about people only getting famous outside of Korea if their music is appealing, that's a vast oversimplification. The key to global success is marketing. Market well enough initially and international fans will eat up even mediocre musical efforts. WM are not marketing powerhouses, that's part of the reason why Oh My Girl haven't found their footing yet despite their songs being liked by almost everyone who hears them (in my experience). Heck in recent years B1A4's most successful comeback internationally has been Solo Day and that's one of their more generic sounding songs imo.

ReacttotheK You should show them MBLAQ! All the members have blood type A, and their fandom is A+. The group has great songs, Stay, Cry, Mona Lisa, This is War, Smoky Girl, Be a Man, Mirror, etc..

I'm really glad you mentioned the fact that Jinyoung is such a well known producer, but I noticed you never mentioned anything about the fact that he was never TAUGHT anything. He's completely self learned. While he can read scores, he doesn’t write in them. This is definitely a benefit, in a way, because it makes his music a lot more unique as he never learned the patterns that are common in certain genres or stuff like that. But, also, that makes his music confusing to people who have been taught music theory and can play instruments, because he absolutely strays from traditional patterns and sounds, which I heard them mention before. I really wish you would have mentioned this (though, I have a feeling you aren't a super huge fan of B1A4 and just didn't know), because it would have made them understand the song so much more! Also, I wish you would have mentioned the fact that Jinyoung composes, writes, produces, and arranges the majority of B1A4’s ENTIRE DISCOGRAPHY (as well as other groups, of course, which you did mention), which is extremely large, and that Jinyoung isn’t the only one in the group who does it! Baro has written every single rap he’s ever done in their Korean discography - literally every single one, since the first mini album - and CNU has written lyrics regularly since debut, as well as started composing and producing in 2014. CNU has had at least one song on every album since 'Who Am I' was released. And, now, Sandeul, who is one of the best vocalists in kpop and has his own solo mini album (and I hope you show them some of his vocal performances or at least his solo, as he's absolutely amazing) has started composing as well! He has a song he worked on that is on their newest mini album. They're such an original, hardworking, and unique group, and I hope that you will show them more of B1A4's stuff in the future so they can see just how diverse they are, even if the tracks aren't their style! I'm totally up for giving recommendations for title tracks, b-sides, performances, etc. if need be! (I'm not sure if it's obvious but I absolutely adore this group. They're my all time favorite, as well as like...NCT, Red Velvet, Twice, etc.)

Jinyoung is such a good producer and song writer. He’s also the leader for B1A4. He also wrote one song called one step two step for oh my girl. He wrote for produce 101 too and much of the B1A4. He was never taught anything, never studied music but his passion for music production moves me. Baro also wrote his own raps. Sandeul is a great vocalist who has his own album too. Cnu also wrote songs for B1A4. Pls check out B1A4 more.

I'm kinda surprised and honestly a little disappointed that no one picked up on why those modulations are there / what the song is about - I feel like no one was _actually_ paying attention to the lyrics - I'm also really surprised that I don't see anyone in the comments talking about it ?? If you pay attention to the lyrics, you'll see that the singer realizes the girl isn't happy in the relationship, so he tells her he wants to end it, because he wants her to go freely pursue whatever it is that will make her happy, even if it means they won't be together. He still loves her and wants to hang on, but he _lies_ to her (hence the title of the song), saying he doesn't want to be with her anymore, so that she can be happy. Notice that the modulations line up with when the lyrics say "what I've said is a lie // when I told you to leave, it was a lie [...] please don't leave, it was all a lie" - this is something he's only saying to himself, not to the girl - it shows his true feelings. That moment is _supposed_ to be kinda jarring, and those sections are supposed to feel very unexpected/different/out of place, to reflect how the lyrics are conveying feelings that are totally different from what his actions would suggest - how what the singer tells the girl is so different from how he _actually_ feels. The rap further demonstrates this - "I've said hurtful things and turned my back on you" - he lied and was cold and that pains him but he feels like it was something he had to do; then he thinks back to how their relationship was before, when they seemed happy together, and wishes they could just go back to how they were back then, though he also knows that's not possible. In the bridge the lyrics really outline how he became aware that at some point she was no longer happy in the relationship and seemed like she felt alone and was suffering, and how he just wants her to be able to be happy again, even though that means they have to break up, which will be very painful for him, as he's still in love with her ("leave, leave me and be happy, please, be happier"). It's deliberately jarring and weird, it's supposed to feel unsettling in a way, and like it doesn't fit into the rest of the song ! It represents his true feelings that are eating him up inside but that he's keeping hidden from her and suffering through so that she can be happy ! The crescendo reflects his inner torment from having to hide his true feelings and let go of the person he loves (and by lying and being cold to them) ! okay sorry rant over

I think the way I interpret the weird change in modulation fits the song overall. The song talks about the guy breaking it off with his girl, but in the chorus he changed his mind and it was actually all _a lie_ and he still loved her. The key shift in the chorus is reflective to the lyrics itself. Jinyoung is a genius, he never disappoints BANAs. I was also surprised from the shift, but it really works somehow???? It's a risky thing to do and I really believe B1A4 needs more love.

I've followed B1A4 from 2013 and watching the music video again made me want to cry. It reminded me of a lot of my childhood memories since they accompanied all my childhood until I graduated. Honestly I don't feel like they are stereotypical pop but maybe because I'm SUPER B1A4 biased (legit have all of their korean releases including OST and most of their japanese releases) but there is just a sound that is really B1A4 and well it makes sense cuz of Jinyoung.

That's something so great about them! I love that they don't sound like everyone else in kpop at least. But also I love that they're not trying to make "the next best thing" ... even if their songs aren't totally complex in their composition, it feels like they just make the music that they like. It's because their music isn't trying to be crazy great knock your socks off never heard before stuff, it's just music that's enjoyable - that makes it uniquely B1A4.
