Classic Mini bolt-in electric conversion kit.

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video we take a tour of our bolt-in electric conversion kit for the classic Mini. The motor we use is a Tesla small drive unit. The weight of the Mini after the conversion ends up being around the same as carrying an adult passenger around.

I have built and driven fast Minis for 40 years and and have a massive love of the A-Series and all that goes with it. My family say that I have petrol in my veins - but I must admit, that you have done something quite special here. In terms of performance you have certainly nailed it - and your kits will doubtless help more classic Minis to stay on the road - good for you.

Later Minis that are not yet tax exempt perhaps, as they are affected by the growing number of emission zones. But the prospect of rebuilding an A series every other decade sounds far more affordable than replacing batteries, which are used to start with. With the low amount of generally summer miles done by most remaining real Minis, I don't see the use benefit case.

I see your point, but my assumption (perhaps flawed) is that the typical person who builds or commissions an electric Mini (or an electric version of any classic) is a lot less worried about vfm than I would be. I love the A-series and never have much cash, so my choice is sadly an easy one.🙂

@@ElectricClassicCarsHi Folks - nice work on the kit. I have a question: How much boot space does the rear pack consume? Is there any usable space left? Can you still slide a spare tire (maybe a compact spare) in on top of the pack? I think if I were to convert my '91 Cooper I would want to flatten out the boot floor by cutting out the basin for the spare tire and welding in a plate, but then put one of those external spare tire hangers under the boot floor in the middle of the subframe, and also convert the battery box so that it has a waterproof hatch on it so that the lithium 12V battery could be stowed away underneath to preserve boot space but still be accessible without having to remove the main pack. Anyway: how much boot space remains with your kit? And have you considered a lower voltage / lower hp motor and shorter "commuter/shopping" range setup that might omit the need for the rear pack altogether?

I found a photo that Richard emailed and the boot battery box height only gets to about halfway up the taillights, so you could still get a few groceries (or possibly a spate tire) in there while preserving the 4-seater-ness that so many other Mini EV conversions don't. It looks like a really great kit, and only adds 60-70kg to the total weight? Easily overcome from the 100hp vs 60hp from the 1.3 engine. This one you say is to fit Mk2/3, would there be any plan for later MK6/7 conversions? They aren't too far different but different subframes and bigger wider wheels. The difficulty also being in the ECU and Lucas alarm system which i guess would need to be replaced? Also, how does this take account of the ancillaries like wipers, washer, radio etc?

Some cars like the Honda Jazz had an AWD version available in the home Japanese market. I wonder if it would be possible to make a really small low cost conversion to add about 75hp to the rear wheels that could be switched to either be used regeneratively around town with the engine off but retaining the engine to allow very long distances away from charge points, or as a combined power alternative to the K24 swaps that some people do? EDIT: I guess you would need the engine on at all times to power the standard assisted-steering and assisted-brakes without modification, but if the throttle pedal were adjusted to give inversely proportional amounts of electric regenerative effect for the first 2cm of depression and positive power after 2cm depression, and the petrol engine only gave power after 3cm depression, there would be great saving of stop/start wastage as well as doubling the available power for standing-start acceleration without much wheelspin.

I’ve long since said there is a huge market for low cost EV conversions in the future. If EVs take off like I think they will there will be plenty of people who may not be able to buy a new one and instead opt for a cheaper retrofit. I know one of the big US manufacturers were looking at selling a Crate EV kit but haven’t heard much about it since.

As the units are all built around subframe based connections to the car body, assuming the "prefferred professional installer" can fit / fabricate relevant motor mounts to chassis (old engine mounts) would that then allow the standard kit to be fitted to nearly any bodywork?

This would be a great way to upgrade the 169 Fiat Panda. That's the second version from 2004 to 2011. Not to forget the Mk2 Punto a little larger but especially cute in the boat tail two door version. Better spec cars have air conditioning which could be electric powered. Swap the fluid flow to use it for heating or cooling.

Have you thought about having a CHAdeMO connector in the second twin tank filler. I think it should fit if the type 2 connector fits. Then you could have slow (50Kw max) rapid charging. Adaptors from CHAdeMO to CCS are quite good and this would give your kit better usability for long trips or those who can't charge at home.

They look like the original Mini ones, but they show Battery state of charge, motor temp and of course, speed. All talking via CAN to the BMS and Tesla motor controller. 👍

I was wondering, ever since I watched the Mini conversion on Vintage Voltage, why you couldn’t put a battery box in the centre of the rear subframe? Especially if you deleted the 12v battery box. I know that makes it a little less reversible but it’s easy enough to buy another battery box if you ever did want to reverse the conversion. Also, any plans to make a transfer box/final drive unit suitable for a motor like the NetGain HyPer 9, to fit Minis, 2CVs, Fiat 500s and Beetles? Similar idea to the box you made to fit front motor RWD installs. I know it’s more complicated but the weight, efficiency and space savings would be considerable. Carefully engineered, it may be possible to fit all the cars I listed, front and rear engined, therefore allowing the same main components to be used in numerous conversions? I realise gearing and direction of motor rotation will need to be considered but would love the idea if it’s economically feasible.

Do you need a 12v battery system, part of the 12v need was for the heater drive and the spark/coil. A couple of small 6v or motor cycle batteries would do for the lights and radio cassette player ?

@@highpath4776 I believe they are using a small lithium-ion 12v to run the lights, fire up the contacts for the traction battery etc

Have you guys looked at adding an ultra capacitor set-up to prolong the life of said batteries? Look up Skelton technologies based out of Germany, originally based out of Estonia of all places.

Hey Richard, I was wondering what is running that whole operation. What controls the motor and the battery, is it original tesla hardware?

Great concept. Do you know if your kit will work in a shorty? There doesn't appear to be too much kit intended for the transmission tunnel so perhaps it would work. Would be pretty interested in letting you try as part of a refurbishment commission...

What is a shorty?? If you mean a shortened mini, only shorter cables would be needed for the kit to fit.

It's sad but I'm glad they say right at the beginning they only sell to approved installers. I'm looking for a basic kit I can buy and install myself even if I have to work out many of the problems of installing for my specific vehicle and getting it all to work myself. I can get an old forklift motor or something but I'm sure someone will provide a better solution than that, a kit which includes a modern motor, controllers, charging solutions, either a battery pack or instructions on making one, etc.
