That's an excellent point. Calzaghe beating a 39 year old washed up Roy Jones in 2008 is extremely relevant in discussing a mid 90's Toney vs. Eubank fight.

Great stuff, there was certainly a negative agenda against James Toney from inside the boxing world during two different stretches of his career and his heavyweight tenure after the Ruiz fight is one of those stretches in time, 3 straight robberies and a cut screwjob followed by no fights after the easy Oquendo victory.

LMAO Nigel benn would have been easy pickings for toney. He is tailor made for james toney's style. Eubaink would have been more difficult because of his counter punching abilities. Toney by U.D James Toney in his prime is one of the most naturally talented fighters in recent times alongside pernell whitaker and floyd mayweather. If people here seriously believe benn and eubaink would have beaten james toney they can not seriously be boxing fans.

@imperialpod The ideal fighter for Toney was a come forward puncher, who threw the right hand a lot, like Barkley and Benn. Benn would of been eating counter rights all night. The punch which gave Toney problems was the leaping left hook, a punch which wasn't in Benn's arsenal The Eubank-Toney fight would of been a great fight. Eubank was a long range fighter, Toney was a mid-close range fighter and they were both counter punchers. Power:Eubank Handspeed: Toney Footwork:Toney Skillset:Toney

@imperialpod Eubank vs Benn II was in 1993-10-09 Toney vs Jones was in 1994-11-18 The winner of Toney-Jones was supposed to fight the winner of Benn-McClellan, its talked about in the following books: The Dark Trade by Donald McRae War, Baby:The glamour of violence by Kevin Mitchell There was no talk of Nunn-Benn in 1994 because Nunn was trying to get another shot at the Title, he would fight and lost to Frankie Liles in 1994-12-17

@rjjibtfmj Toney was never a big puncher at mw/smw, he tended to wear his opponents down and stop them late. Eubank had one punch ko power, which he rarely used especially after the Watson II fight. Look at that uppercut he dropped Watson with, or the right hand he dropped iron chinned Collins with. Either way both him and Toney had iron chins so the fight would go the distance I think a blueprint for the fight would be the Toney-Reggie Johnson fight

Toney said that the biggest beating hegave was against Barkley then Toney said Benn was to scared to fight him yet Benn destroyed a younger Barkley inside 1 round when it took Toney 9 so I don't really understand what Toney is on about. Onething you can't call Benn is a coward he faught Barkley in the USA he displayed courage against McClellan and he pretty much begged fora fight with a prime RJJ to be made.

HES BEEN CALLING THEM OUT FOR YEARS NOW! i say, if the guy is shot, old, fat, short then it shouldnt be too hard to beat him right?

Toney would defeat Eubank. Eubank is a very good fighter. But he took a ton of punishment against Nigel Benn in their first fight and struggled against Michael Watson. By the way, thank Richard Steele for that premature stoppage in his "victory" against Nigel Benn. Toney gets the victory in a hard fought decision.
