Classic Game Room - SUPERPAD 64 controller for N64 review
Classic Game Room reviews the SUPERPAD 64 controller for the Nintendo 64. The Superpad 64 is a cheap aftermarket controller to buy if you need more controllers or replace broken or lost ones, but the Super Pad 64 for N64 is sub par at best.

This is the kind of controller that you gave your friend when you played multiplayer.
I've had this controller since at least 2001, and I can say that I love it a lot more than the nintendo one. It just feels better in the hand IMO
It looks like a model 1 SEGA saturn controller on top of a wii nunchunk

LMFAO 3:21 - 3:31 HAD ME DYING !! good one
I got this a while back, and from that point I always used this controller to play n64. I find it a LOT more comfortable than the original controller, which is like so think an awkward
There was another controller called the "Super Pad 64" (that was also made by Performance,) which was actually a more traditional shape. It really liked it, except the control stick was so sensitive that it made some games completely unplayable.
So many fights over who had to use this controller *facepalm*
I actually liked this controller. It's great for Resident Evil

How so?

@@supermariof0521 It has to do with the joystick itself. RE2 was also the last N64 game I played on actual hardware. The OEM N64 Joystick concaves down, while this joystick concaves up, which I think I actually preferred. I've never tried the GC replacement, nor another replacement. I also didn't mind the bulky shape, but I've also never tried out the D-Pad for RE/Kirby
Here's my pros and cons on this controller... Pros + Good metal thumbstick, hand grips are spaced out, shoulder buttons are very nice, it works with all accessories "memory pak, rumble pak, and Transfer Pak", the cord length is a good amount on length, and the colors are very nice. Cons - Z trigger could break "there's a tab that gets loose on that, my advice is apply super glue on the tab before it gets too loose", the top of the thumb stick could come off "again, super glue may fix that", the face buttons aren't the best but certainly not the worst, and it's more thick than your average N64 controller but if you have big hands that could be a pro. Overall the Super Pad 64 by Performance gets a 6 out of 10, not the best 3rd party N64 controller but certainly not the worst.
in my experience this controller had tough stick than originals i love it playing a ton of hours of ISSS 64
The SuperPad was without a doubt my favorite controller for the N64. The joystick actually worked and didn't wear out at all.
it looks like a silhouette of the Space Colony ARK from Sonic Adventure 2

Oh my god, it does!!
i had a nintendo 64 for a week and it was the best week playing tarzan and super mario 64 who remembers these games?
The Superpad looks like a Cardassian Galor Class Warship! :)
it's one of my favorite controllers as well. but let's be honest, that's probably our nostalgia talking :D
Watching this gives me shell shock all those bad memories coming back....
I ran into one of these controllers in storage a couple years ago. Still have it. Perfect thumbstick because no one used it.
I think the N64 controller was an excellent design, very ergonomic and the analogue stick is very responsive and easy to move. As a result it doesn't have the durability of other analogue sticks. The buttons were all well positioned and felt satisfying to press. The best controller design up till now has to be the GameCube wave-bird i reckon.
There was also an n64 conroller with the middle handgrip removed.
Heh, my parents bought us a bunch of those. I don't use them anymore but if I all of a sudden had an N64 party at my house I'd take one for the team and use this while my friends got the real controllers. The Super Pad 8 for the Saturn I will defend as quite good though!
Having to hold that Super Pad in my 6 year old hands...that was brutal.
I was going to say it reminded me of a Cardassian Galor Class Warship.
A store near me sells (brand new) what look like regular n64 controllers just without the Nintendo branding on them ($16) and then ones that look identical but without the pointy bits ($13)
LMAO is that the F button or the U button?! Haha that was a WIN MAN!
I have the Superpad 64. I remember I bought it because it was actually cheaper than the regular N64 controller.
I still have two Superpad 64 controllers. They work fine
After using the superpad 64 for years and years and years, you get use to it.
Sega had analog sticks available before Nintendo did, and they didn't introduce analog sticks. And in actuality, the stick on the N64 was digital, but worked like an analog.
gamecube has always been my favorite controller. and not any third party gamecube controller, i can't believe i bought those.
the d pad is in a few game watches analog sticks were in the atari 5200 controller the analog triggers were in the dreamcast
I have a Superpad 64 "Colors" (In black) controller, to be honest, I find it more comfortable then the original controller, its thicker, so it fits my hands better and it feels less cramped, I play with it angled, so that my right hand straight, its actually really nice. But I can see people having issues with it, I personally like it.
yeeeup. yeah but the fightpads i use, use both extra buttons, a pretty good d-pad and shoulder buttons so i think it evens out a bit. also i love playing the N64 AKI Wrestling games with the n64 controller. it uses most of the c buttons and shoulder buttons, and the gameplay is more about planning moves instead of fast button presses so it works very well
16 people don't have more to grip and, consequentially, more to love.
My cats always are eating my controllers! You really helped me with this!
I have on of those superpads. mine is transparent red and not that ugly gray. I played all of paper mario with it and it became my main controller. I use a rumble pack with it all the time. with out the pack it feels odd to hold.
If you cut that controller in half you get 2 controllers. The wii nunchuck and the motion wii main controller with all the same buttons.... Nintendo is so creative.
THE CAT ATE YOUR OTHER CONTROLLER.
I don't know about you guys, but I found a cheap used version of this and I like it more than the n64 controller. It has a WAY better stick. The layout is a little hard to get used to, but it's nothing distracting or anything once you do. At least in my opinion.
With more to grip, there's more to love! Words to live by.
I actually loved that controller. I find the N64 controllers to be the best feeling and best control with a analog stick
My relatives still have this! Even a bunch of other third party controllers
I still have like 4 SuperPads for my N64. To bad the only thing wrong with all of them is the wiring. Im gunna fix it later.
I had the same controller (only it was clear blue) and It didn't have the d pad problem, or the Z button problem. And I found, since I used it extensively, the control stick doesn't wear out like the Nintendo brand controller. I thought this controller was well worth it.
I had/have this controller! The little badge that says "SUPERPAD 64 / PERFORMANCE" that fell off. It's just glued on. It was really awkward to use because of its thickness.
thats great and all and I'm sure you did alot of thinking about it, but i think it comes down to is how well you adapt to a control scheme. for example, FPS games are supposedly more precise with mouse and keyboard, but that doesnt mean people cant be great at dual analog. plus if you're accustomed to a controller you might not feel right with a mouse. I've been playing the SF games with fightpads as I'm just now getting into. so of course I'm more at home with six buttons AND shoulder buttons.
Friend has a super pad. He had the thumbsticks ripped out, and had a lipstick kiss on it. Kid was one crazy son of a bitch.
In actuality, the SuperPad 64 wasn't even an aftermarket controller. It was well around during the N64 days. If any N64 controller brand that would be considered "aftermarket" would be the Retro-Bit brand. -KT
REVIEW THE HORI MINI PAD!!!!!!!!! YOU'D LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Super Smash Bros & Goldeneye! Hell yeah!
Nintendo 64 color controllers is so awesome
I got my Mario Kart 64 for $8 because the guy at PawnAmercia couldn't figure out if the N64 used for testing even worked. I surely wasn't going to say that the N64 won't do anything when turned on without a game.
i love this controller!! its so comfy! and the buttons (other then the z i agree, mine broke) the thickness makes it it more comfortable. for some games they are very good. and also other then the normal n64 controller the analog stick is actually very good and doesent were out
you're right it wasn't a thumbstick, it was just a stick that didn't self center
I have two SuperPad 64s, and to be honest, I kinda like them: I always liked third-party created remotes
I have a Nyko Alpha64(good all around, and my fav, it's sort of like a PS1 controller, with to analog sticks) 2 InterAct SuperPad64 plus(good for racers), and 1 Myiicco(dirt cheap, but it works).
I can just imagine Mark writing on the controller: LESS TAAN...Oh Shit...I can make this funny...
Fair enough, I suppose sega should get all the credit for a proper analog/digital controller design.(plus the analog stick was actually durable) This was only like 2 weeks after n64s release, mind you.
@eklipsegirl I definitely agree, if you love N64 you need that controller. Hope CGR can get a hold of one to review :)
Wow I still have one of these except I really didn't have any complaints I guess I'd better get it out again
I really don't have a problem with this controller. I honestly like the exclusion of the grips because I was always afraid they would get in the way if I needed the d-pad. (for some odd reason) And I really don't think that the buttons are a far-cry from the originals. I don't really care much for the c buttons.
You mean the expansion port? It's typically used for rumblepacks or memory transfer packs, i'd imagine there are other expansions that go there as well.
I think it's nice that he, reviews old products like new ones ^^
I only ever had the superpad 64. So with that being said I am used to it. in fact I can't play on the original controller at all. I got 4 of these.... Because I thought they were the real deal until like 2009.
N64 is actually my favorite controller next to the gamecube!
The SuperPad 64 is an affront to the N64 controller.
I was just in the situation where i invited 8 people round to play retro video games and I only had 2 N64 controllers with which to play goldeneye. :/ luckily i had an NES setup to the other TV so we had to have both of those going at once.
hell yeah haha. yknow goin back to sticks, i actually have an N64 arcade stick thing. but its flawed in that the c buttons are at a different elevation and smaller size than the A and B buttons. its called the Arcade Shark if you want to check it out. i need to get Namco Museum so i can play me some galaga and Dig Dug with it. its pretty intresting to use it with different games for the system haha
When I saw it the first thing that came to my mind was a Cardassian ship.
Picked one up at goodwill for 3 bucks the other day
@LolliPowah I just looked it up and that has to be one of the most awesome controllers I've seen.
I remember i had the golden Superpad 64!!
Probably the best controller ever made, the N64 Hori mini pad.
I got a n64 for Christmas and my poor grandpa didn't know the difference so he bought me a super pad 64
I had a bunch of awkward N64 controllers, most of them didn't even worked but I've never seen this model before.
I remember this controller! this is the controller I give to the low ranking noob player, hes ususally player 4 or a younger cousin.
i actually preferred this controller over the other original one... the joystick felt better while the original's got old and unresponsive... The buttons were harder to press (which is something I liked), though admittedly it felt a little bulky
01:42 you call that flimsy? No. My controller has virtually no resistance on the analog stick. It still works though
I think I had this in color. The analog stick stopped working out of nowhere.
Yes, that's the one I was talking about.
i've been waiting for this review!
I remember my shiny golden superpad... it broke... very quickly... the "superpad" panel easily popped off, exposing the innards of the controller.
i had that controller, and the new guy at our 007 sessions would be stuck with it!
I have two of those controllers. One of them doesn't work, and I ended up breaking the Z button on the other one :( It's actually not so bad a controller, as the joystick is much more durable and once you get used to the thickness, it's odd to go back to the standard controller. I just wish I could fix them.
I really liked the superpad, it was nice for FPS like Quake2 007 and Perfect Dark. I liked the stick cause it was not a plastic piece of garbage.
i had bad memories with diz N64 SuperPad controller! glad i got used to it but it broke quickly 4 me :(
lol I still have one of these...the joystick cover is long gone but it still works surprisingly haha it blows ass though and idk why i'm even holding onto it.
Oh wow i remember this! I used to have that controller! It was a piece of junk though because the Z button always broke.
This was on my birthday! :-D
Okay so here is how you hold an N64/superpad64 controller,if you are holding a standard n64 controller, put your left hand on the middle pointy bit, then, put your right hand on the right pointy bit,if you are holding a superpad64 controller you put your right hand on the right groove,if you learned something from this comment, please give a like
i never even heard about this LOL thanks for the heads up LOL
Compare the middle part of the N64 controller with the control stick with the Wii's Nunchuck :P
wwow there are so many colors now adays i see, when i went to gamestop they had like stock grey ones, and i think the green one i have came with zelda
I saw one of these at the Goodwill.
The Superpad, further making the N64 controller look like a rocketship Well, at least the one from Asteroids....
@InecomCompany PLEASE DO A REVIEW OF THE NEW WIRELESS RETROBIT N64 PADS !
i played n64 all the time back in the day, I just didn't treat my stuff like crap, I took care of my things
i love performance i still got the dream cast memory card good times playing sonic
Can't believe I had this controller in the past... What was I thinking...? I mean, even the thumbstick can pop off!
the original n64 controller was good and it looks for me a little bit like the spaceship in treasures "RADIANT SILVERGUN". :-)
Ive never bothered with the unofficial name controllers, always felt them unreliable, I had a madcatz one and it didnt last me long at all. Its been like nearly 20yrs and my proper Brand name Nintendo controllers still work fine. Its just the analog that gets alittle stiff and weak, if u were the type of hardcore gamer that rinsed out ur controller on games like Goldeneye 64 lol. The main controller was great cus it allowed both Analog and D-pad ways of playing. And it felt comfortable handling
