Classic Game Room reviews MEGA TURRICAN for Sega Genesis released in 1994. From Data East and Rogue Squadron developer Factor 5 comes this amazing 16-bit action platformer with some of the best style and music ever created for the mega Sega MEGA DRIVE. Mega Turrican rocks with rocking music (some of the best on the Sega Genesis!) and awesome 16-bit visuals that explode with colors, details and lots of motion. Mega Turrican is a feast for the eyes and ears as well as for those who want a serious challenge! Fight waves of enemies using a slim selection of weapons but hunt down numerous one-ups and collect gems (which is risky!) for extra points. Mega Turrican has enough gameplay and charm to keep any Mega Drive fan happy for quite some time. CGR Mega Turrican video review has Mega Turrican gameplay recorded from Sega Genesis (Sega Mega Drive).

In my opinion, this is one of the best games on the Genesis. It has highly detailed graphics, smooth and fast gameplay, and great music. The programmers also made nice color choices.
Lord Karnage should make a must have genesis list I will totally comply
One of my favorite Genesis games. So good.
You know the feel when you love a game and Mark reviews it and he states he loves it as much as you, and shares your opinion? That feeling is engulfing me right now. It's awesome.
I remember playing this gem back when it was released, and I just couldn't believe my eyes and ears! There're so many things done right in this game that it is just overwhelming. From the scaling and rotating sprites to the shadow/highlight transparency effects, coupled with the unbelievable soundtrack, it was just crazy to think it was all running on a stock MD. Pity not so many MD games had this level of graphical and sound refinement!
Finally got my hands on this today for the Genesis. I’ve had it on the collection for switch but happy to have the original finally
This is the one game on my Genesis that I will never get rid of.
Came for the Mega Turrican review, stayed for the Soundgarden reference. Stay classy CGR.
The intro music makes me so happy.
Keep the Genesis reviews coming! The best console of all time!
Turrican used to be my favourite game on the C64, when I was a wee lad in 1990. I never knew about this version, as I was a Nintendo kid. I need to get this!
I just got a copy of this from a friend for free. Im relieved to here its a great game. cant wait to play it for myself
god the theme song is so good, its become something I look forward to every video
Who else wants to see CGR to return?
I've been waiting for this for ages! Listen to the music!
The review for this game in it's entirety could have been an enthusiastic "THIS GAME ROCKS!", but I appreciate the attention to superfluous details.
AWESOME game, glad to see people recognizing Turrican more
I remember the SNES version being really good as well
man i love u guy's reviews.
this game looks so sick! great review.
Thanks bro I've been trying to find the name of this game since I was a kid. Hours of fun.
loved the soundgarden reference
I am now so old that I can remince about renting video games. I rented this game once a knew I had to own it. Controls are a 10.
Another great review. You ever think of doing top 10's for each system?
This game (among many many other classics) deserves a re-release/remake.

9 years later and I just got my copy of Mega Turrican Directors Cut in the mail! About to pop it into my Analogue Mega SG!
Great series of games, especially Turrican II.
I still have this game, and it's in pristine condition. :D
This looks like a lot of fun, I'll try it if I get the chance
nice gameplay Mark
Had this on the Amiga. Good times. =)
I had no idea this game existed. I had the normal Turrican for the Megadrive (which came in a cardboard box). Man that game was ball-breakingly hard. The makers didn't understand the concept of a 'gentle learning curve'.
Mark should review Mega Man X. It, too, has some of the best 16-bit music ever created and it's personally my favorite game ever.
Quiz!? I 4got my "MEGA" Pencil lol. Love the vids dude.
Another awesome game to look out for cool!
I was there, but I can't recall having heard 'rad' and 'ass' in portmanteau form. The kudos are totally all yours, dude! lol ;)
lol you finally review a game I've actually played. I loved this game when I was little.
Good memories of this game I use to have.

Hey yoda!
Cool looking game I will have to get this.
looks awesome!
Another great review... How about Hellfire? Did a search and couldnt find a CGR review for it... what do you think of it?
Ive been missing your reviews for about 3 months now. Damn youtube subscriptions messing up.
Awesome!!
Nice review, I didn't know some of those secret passages you showed. It's a good game, my only complaints are the tedious Aliens levels and, like other Turrican games, the camera doesn't show enough of the approaching level.
that part where you're fighting the machine with the spotlight is in contra the alienwars 3
Sega Genesis Can Scale???? Good Job Sega!!
@liquidextal

+Matthew Calderon yeah its possible but requires some good programming. rotation has to be done completely in software on the genny. for scaling you can rewrite the scroll registers somewhat during HBLANK which allows for faster vertical stretching.

Sega Genesis can't scale, in theory at least. developers quickly had to replace sprites with self-made smaller or bigger versions of sprites to make it seem like they were getting smaller or bigger. The same principle applies for PC Engine games. It's a lot of work to make it look smooth and many developers just didn't want to put in the effort.

Marco Wolken The Genesis could do scaling/rotation through software coding, although the hardware technically wasn't capable. Some good examples of scaling in Genesis games include the Road Rash series, and the intro of Splatterhouse where a skull scales towards the screen. The Genesis was also capable of FMV, as seen in the intro to Sonic 3D Blast. It could even push polygonal graphics.

Its blast processing ;)
It looks amazing.
I never gave this one the attention it deserves, it seems great!
I fucking love games where you can switch between water and land combat.
'Radass'... Putting that one in the repertoire, TYVM ;)
this game looks soo sweet
i mega like the music of this game and the game play was mega hard at the time LOL this game rocks!
Oh, cool. I didn't know that. Thanks!
I have this game - it's amazing!
I love this one!
2 months old and all, but... Mega Turrican was first developed on the Genesis and then ported to the Amiga. Also, the soundtrack is much better on the black beast... for me, at least. Turrican 2 was better on Amiga, though.
Chris Hülsbeck is the man :D
Looks worth playing just for the awesome Alien level!
He could in the first two (from a static position) using the beam weapon! when they introduced the plasma rope it came in at the expense of the beam weapon! there were a number of ability differences in this final entry of the Turrican series
Just played super turrican on genesis it’s so good, music is so good
Mega Turrican sound so... wow.. i'm intimidated and overwhelmed...
Turrican games were known in Europe for Amiga computers (Commodore Amiga 500 was very popular computer in Europe)
Always love Soundgarden references!
That almost happened in the late '90s, though as a third person shooter. Manfred Trenz was working on it, but it ran into funding problems, IIRC.
Yep, many thought it was based on Metroid but as you know thats certainly NOT the case! Its Turrican through and through - I used to love Turrican 2 on the Amiga, and what a soundtrack! "Desert Rocks" is pure nostalgia.
This game looks amazing.
The music is so fucking awesome!
I'd also add Concerto to lasers and enemies, Traps and the wall and unidirectional flight (etc)
Never herd of this game tho looks soo f-n sweet..wonder if i can get the rom for my emulator?
awesome review! Mark, can you do a special on Borderlands 2 please? Pretty please with small pieces of vectrex sprinkled on top?
This is what Blaster Master 2 should have looked like on the genesis.
Have you guys reviewed Lightening Force??? Id like to see that...
Some of the backgrounds were certainly more vibrant on the Megadrive but the music on the Amiga version (Turrican 3) blew this away! Far more layers far better continuous melodies! Musically the Amiga version cannot be beat and that makes it the superior version because the music of Chris Hulsbeck is vital in the enjoyment of this series!

maybe you should get into collecting vinyl records if you prioritize musice over gameplay
@katakisLives

@@handrewmillan4293 The gameplay is no different on either of the games and the soundtracks on the Turrican games is of supreme importance And the music is vastly superior on the Amiga. the Sega Genesis has never had a great reputation for its music or sound effects
How is this vs Contra Hard Corps? Which one is better for gameplay/fun?
@DeskoDev
3 жыл бұрын
While the two share a lot of similarities, they're very different games. Both games are pretty technically impressive and have amazing soundtracks, but Contra: Hard Corps puts exploration on the back seat for the most part, instead having branching paths based on your choices, and the gameplay there is much faster paced and a LOT more brutal, especially if you're playing the US release where one hit means instant death (the JP release gives you three hit points). On the other hand, Mega Turrican is a lot slower-paced (though still tough) and features more open stages with a strong emphasis on exploring the levels for secrets, and for the most part, features simpler mechanics that emphasize effectively using the different weapons at your disposal. You also can't aim diagonally, so you'll need to rely on weapon range and learning how to best use the game's plasma rope mechanic; the learning curve is a bit higher. Hard Corps allows you to aim in 8 directions and also gives you a wider variety of weapons, each with different functions that also vary depending on the character you're playing as. The game puts an emphasis on lightning-fast reflexes and always keeps you on your toes, often giving you little time to breathe until the end of the stage, and learning the enemy and boss patterns and how to most effectively deal with them is a major part of learning how to play; this is especially true on overseas releases as mentioned as one mistake means instant death. The game's especially difficult if you've never played a Contra game before as it's one of the hardest in the series period, even with hitpoints. Mega Turrican, on the other hand, is often seen as the easiest game in the series, though calling the game itself easy would be a stretch; it still takes a lot of practice to beat it. Overall, neither game is really comparable to one another. I'd recommend trying both, maybe Mega Turrican first thanks to Hard Corps's difficulty.
very true i wish the Amiga was was more common years back, i would have loved it when i was a kid
ULTRAMEGA OK! Haha im wearing my Soundgarden shirt as I watch this :D
Talk about which, today I gots me three genny games for $10: Thunder Force 2, 6-Pak and Strider 2. The carts are kinda beat up and you probably don't care, but I felt like sharing my joy :P
This game is the bomb! One of the best platformers of all time and I've played more than I can count. Honestly just try this sometime, everyone should try this at least once.
This game has some fucking fantastic music on the amiga.
Mega Turrican is well worth the price of admission! I will simply say this once: It's a must buy!
THIS VERSION LOOKS LIKE MORE FUN THAN THE SNES COUNTERPART WILL DEFINITELY BE GETTING A COPY FOR SURE👍😎

The third game never appeared on the SNES, the SNES has 2 Turricans, they seem to be unique games in the series.
Indeed. Gunlord is a carbon copy of Turrican. That is a HUGE praise, though!
i wasnt ready for the quiz :(
Turrican 3 for me was a good game and the music fit the game! it all sounded much richer and melodic on the Amiga! I felt that it rounded up the trilogy nicely! he gets the girl in the end and saves the day and the end theme has a certain optimistic sound to it as if his trials are finally over! a lot of the music in the game has a feel that it was the last adventure for Bren Mc Guire and that fit the whole feel of the game.
It is, it's so fun it's beyond belief.
Looks like a mix of M.E.R.C.S with Shadow of the beast combined. I like it!
his name is mark and ive been watching man vs food all morning lol
Ultramega cool... reminds me of Soundgarden...
How is it possible that you of all people haven't reviewed (Gunstar Hero's) ? You must have played it on the sega mega drive or gameboy advance ! It's a great run n gun contra/ turrican style game !
After watching MEGA Turrican. I'm now going to play MEGA Man on my NES :D
that´s what i call a MEGA REVIEW :D
Super Turrican on the NES is pretty good and awesome music too
Sega gave the coolest names for their consoles. heck, even sg-1000 sounds cool:)
Turrican 2 on Amiga was my favorite, though.
Sohggoth! 1:55 I need to get this game!
You can get Turrican 2 on the Mega Drive as well it's just disguised as Universal Soldier.
Mega Turrican = Best Version
They're different, in fact, you can get this one and, the other two SNES versions on Virtual Wii
I love this guy!
Of course it's rocking, Chris Hülsbeck did the music, yo.
Can't go wrong with putting "Mega" in front of any name! :)
