Great little handhelds. I have a Wonderswan Color and a Swan Crystal. Its really amazing that these things are reasonably capable 16-bit systems that get awesome battery life running on a SINGLE AA battery, and the color versions have more RAM than the Game Boy Advance. Overall very underrated systems and should have at least attempted to sell in the US and European markets.

Thank you mentioning about the contrast dial! I have a Wonderswan that I thought was unplayably dark, but turns out I just the the contrast way down. I didn't realise that dial was there!

My fiancé bought me a Final Fantasy Edition Wonderswan Color with the first to Final Fantash games for $56. The anticipation of its arrival is killing me! I've wanted one for a few years now and I feel like a kid nearing Christmas!

awesome video! really brought some good memories, Fun fact the WonderSwam was develop by Gumpey Yokoi the most awesome dude who created the original cross D-Pad for the NES that is still used now on gamepads and created the original Gameboy!

wow. i just bought the final fantasy wonderswan color fresh in the box with final fantasy 1 and 2, its pretty badass, though, i dont understand the japanese, its pretty awesome!!!

Just got a Wonderswan Color and a boxed copy of FF. It's sad this awesome little portable never made it State side.

Cool fact about the wonderswan, its 8086 based. Yep, its just like the old PCs and is x86 based. Only thing though, its the v30 version, which has some 186 instructions too. My old ibm pc has a v30 installed, fun..

A cool system, and it seemed to precede the iPhone with its gyroscope feature of rotating the screen somewhat to play certain games vertically like the Vectrex.

@xaer0knight That would be Gunpei Yokoi, who also worked on much of the Game and Watch collection, but after the failure of the VB, he was given what's called a Window job by Nintendo, so he left, and started work on the Wonder Swan, but never got to see it fully finished, as he died in a car crash shortly there after.

all i use to know about the wonderswan is FF1 was the best selling game on it, but now I know a lot more

@ChaosZack08 The game he was just playing there at the moment was apparently some Super Robot Wars title (just in case you didn't knew that). The SRW series is known for having crossover between such series as Gundam, Gurren Lagann, Big O, Macross, Evangelion, Mazinger Z, Votoms, Gunbuster, GaoGaiGar, Virtual On, and ALOT more.

A junk listing of WonderSwan is cheaper than I thought so I think I can easily get my hand on a WonderSwan

I have one and a few games. It is annoying to import these games and console but it is worth it.

I always wanted it to come to the west after learning about a Digimon game for it, that's actually compatible with the Digivice toy. Which I also never had but always wanted. And in a nostalgic way still want.

+Rylan Dawe Well it kinda rare outside Japan. I got the special Panda edition from Play-Asia for $80 Dead Stock unit. Couldn't be more happy with it,very portable portable game system and it only required ONE AA Battery and lasts for 40 hour of gameplay

I assume im way to late on this but might well update for the readers, the black and white version is not that rare about 20 usd as of 2018.

SUPER ROBOT WARS COMPACT 2 PART 1! HELL YEAH! I own every SRW game for the WonderSwan. :) Well, except for the color remake of SRWC1, that's actually really expensive. :(

This handheld can be considered a true successor to the Game Boy and, in a sense, to the TurboExpress. I say that a review of the WonderSwan Color and the SwanCrystal is in order.

I have a black and white one and a color one. Never got the crystal version. Not a bad system but like Mark said, all of the games are in Japanese. I was able to play and enjoy Tekken Card Battle though. Good game even though all of the texts is unreadable by me. I also had a Mega Man game. It was basically the Transmission game from the Gamecube. Awesome game. Final Fantasy was unplayable as well as some Gundam game. I did really like Final Lap. Just like the arcade version.

Mark you are just awesome, you should now review the Atari lynx 2!!!

@thiefrules Take a look at the game library, research for what of those games feature english, engrish or pick-up-and-play gameplay, take into account if you like said games, and also take into consideration if you want this as a gamer or as collector. Regardless of what you answered to the above points, if the one you saw is at a low price and in good condition, then it's a must have, as this is a vintage item.

Ooh, I have the same pink SwanCrystal. It's a really amazing handheld, and the graphics (of the color games) are comparable to the GBA... in fact, the Final Fantasy games on the GBA are almost identical to the WonderSwan Color versions, which came out several years earlier.

Youve made me buy another game system, Mark. I got the orange/white wsc with digimon packed in. Klonoa is so hard to find but it looks pretty awesome. some guy put one on ebay today for 120 usd. A little overpriced if you ask me.

Wasn't this console designed by Gumpei Yokoi? I was looking into getting one of these on ebay a few years ago but never pulled the trigger, wish I had: this thing looks awesome!

@f00tbol The WonderSwan was invented by Yokoi Gunpei, the same creator of Metroid, the Game Boy, the D-Pad, and of course, the Virtual Boy.

I swear, I assumed Mohammed donated this to CGR since I saw the thumbnail in the video. He's the second most reccognized person in CGR! 1st being mark of course.

But if you don't have time, it's OK, since a) Videogames are not a matter of life or death b) You can always find this console for relatively low (and even bargain) prices, regardless of where in the world you are (well, almost).

And I think Mark, it's time to learn japanese... or getting someone to help with it. But seriously the screen quality is very nice for a B&W portable game!
