I had one, my first car bought from the Biology teacher at my old high school.... A Morris Oxford Mk IV... Not fast (about 80 mph top speed, 25 seconds to reach 60 mph, but was happy to hold that all day doing about 30 mpg) rock solid, and very comfortable. Wish I had kept hold of it.

The Oxford was such a smart car after it got rid of its fins. The ride was so comfortable, quiet and fast.

It was a damn shame what ignorant and unappreciative people did to these automotive gems. Absolutely disgusting!

Awful rustbuckets! All models were horribly prone to tinworm.

Like all cars of the era. At least bodywork was easy to fix.

Aside from these British classics the Peugeot, Lancia Flaminia, Fiat 2300 and many more were BRILLIANT Pininfarina designs which represented the very finest European design INSPIRED by the Americans but not being overwhelmed by too much chrome and tailfins....

I owned a 1962 Morris Oxford 1622cc with a bench front seat, great car rusty but never let me down, i personally still like the Riley.

Pinin Farina also designed the Peugeot 404 very similar.

I think Pininfarina just flogged Peugeot & BMC the same plans and let them fiddle about with the general design to economise on tooling. Both were good products, but I think Peugeot made a better product. You only have to look in Africa to see there are quite a few still running. In fact Top Gear did a funny section about Peugeot and it was strongly suggested that the 404 was such a dependable vehicle that it did more to explore & mobilise Africa than LANDROVER ever did.

My dads MG Farina magnette 9102KM was nicked by banger racers . Never saw it again. They also tried to steal GYU 70C his Riley4/72 but I got that back

farinas were great family cars and its a shame so many were destroyed on banger racing tracks

+john usher Totally agree. I worked on them back in those days and they were good reliable family cars. Engines were bullet proof and many of these engines would see 100,000 miles quite happily if properly cared for. Simple and easy to work on, they were value for money. Just a shame the trade unions destroyed the British Motor Industry. Not many of these Farina,s in Australia now.

greetings from New Zealand - overhauled one - a Austin A60 - put a warmed over MG1800 in - it bolted in timed at just over 100Mph - had 2 issues with the old motor - exhaust valves would stick open climbing hills very poor cylinder head Lubrication - oil pulsed through camshaft bearing - why ? also known for 2 bolt Exhaust flange falling off and exhaust front pipe hitting road - mine did it minor rust problems and never broke down - sturdy front - people kept out of the way of you :)

1959 Farina Oxford. Fins not needed as car was pretty slow. You could never get an erection over one of those things. After a few months my mother sold hers and got a new Sunbeam Rapier. Now that was nice car with twice the go of the gutless Oxford.

well they did make a faster MG version and in my opinion the BMC `B` engine was better than the Rapier engine ,, The Rapier engine tended to put rods through the side!! but all in all they were both quite nice cars. I have worked on many of these in my younger days

Even without banger racing you do know cars get scrapped don't you? Solution: Buy a warehouse and start stockpiling your favourite classics but stop acting like the breakers should all be executed for practicing their business.

I bought a 1959 Austin Cambridge Farina in 1969 for £80 it needed the outriggers on the chassis welding as they'd fallen to pieces and rust was up both front wings near the doors. I did get a reconditioned gearbox in to replace the one where the second gear crashed, but it was quite sound when I sold it for £50 at the end of 1972. I bought a new Mini 850 and was dismayed to see rust appearing on the bodywork before the first year was up. It's sad to see the old marques go, but they really work rubbish and we just view them now with nostalgia and part of our early motoring lives. I now drive a three year old Hyundai and I still have two years warranty to go. I'm certain if I felt like it I could let it see me out as my last car. In truth the only places the BMC cars actually lasted was in the road salt free far flung empire. The Ambassador car produced in India a prime example.

I did own one , a very late J reg Oxford. Rot? Not half. Far worse than the early ones. It lasted until 1984 when it was past any redemption. Shame, as it was rather pleasant to drive.

To get a bit of use out of them on the way to the scrap yard. Each one that dies raises the value of the few which remain.

BMC shared one major design flaw with all cars of the day - corrosion-proofing' or to be precise, a total lack of corrosion-proofing. Cost, see! Bad (incompetent) management, as usual.

Most of them rusted away or fell apart, like all cars do. They only become "classics" when there aren't many left. Each one scrapped raises the value of those remaining.
