I was one of 8 children and, every Sunday, my Mum baked 2 or 3 plate fruit pies for tea. She used a simple short crust pastry and if, as usual, she had a little left over she'd make a turnover. The normal filling was simply jam, but we kids loved it.

Aww my mum would do that too with left over pastry or she would put cinnamon and brown sugar on it then roll them up. We used to call them pin wheels and they were so yummy.

When my sisters and I were little, our Mum would give us enough leftover pastry so we could each make our own turnover with whatever filling we wanted, and most of the time it was just jam. We were so proud of those turnovers when they came out of the oven. I haven't thought about that in years...thank you for bringing back a wonderful memory. ❤️

Hi from New Zealand. Over here we make ours round then fold them over and before baking, sprinkle over some sugar. Once baked and cold, open the edge that you pressed together and pipe in lashings of whipped cream around the inside edge. Mmmmm... oh darn, I just put on 3 kg thinking about them lol. xx

Normally I don't give much for apple turnovers as well. But the smell of them baking in the oven is like aroma therapy to me. With my children they don't get a chance to cool down. Instead of putting normal flour into the apple mixture I sprinkle a fine layer of almond flour over the pastry to absorb the moisture. It tastes divine, almost like a hint of marzipan.

Just a helpful cheat... after peeling the apples, just cut them in half top to bottom, then use a mellon baller to cut out the center core... you might have a bit of peel at the top and bottom, you can use the mellon baller to slice it off, or just leave it, it will cook down.

Just a suggestion if you're not fond of cooked apples; take them a wee stage further, into apple 𝑝𝑢𝑟𝑒𝑒. Odd as it seems, I'm not a big fan of cooked apples but love apple puree. I think it's the texture of cooked slices and some shop-bought stuff can have uncooked bits it them. Seriously though, give it a try Deb, you might be surprised. 😁 Apart from anything else, there are 𝑠𝑜 𝑚𝑎𝑛𝑦 things you can add to apple puree; Cheryl used cinnamon and nutmeg; I've seen raisins/sultanas mentioned; various kinds of booze can be sneaked in there, especially nearer Christmas; other fruit/berries (definitely raspberries) - the possibilities are endless. Another thought if cooked apples are a no-no, use pears or peaches instead.😁 I hope Cheryl doesn't mind me butchering her recipes. 😂
