Class 8 Science Chapter 4 MATERIALS METALS AND NON METALS Part 2

Hey Everyone ,
Welcome back to another video of science class 8 and also welcome on your channel Shiksha Samadhan. In this video we discuss on Metals and Non-Metals - Materials (Chapter 4): CBSE Class 8 Science. Important topics as Properties of Metals and Non-Metals, Physical properties, Chemical properties, Malleability, Ductility and Conduction of Heat are described in this video. Materials around us can be broadly grouped into metals and non-metals. (a) Physical Properties of Metals Luster: Metals in the pure state generally shine. The shine on the metallic surface is called the metallic luster. Malleability: The property of metals by which they can be beaten into thin sheets is known as malleability. For example, silver metal is beaten to make silver foil used for decorating sweets.
Ductility: It is one of the properties of metals by virtue of which they can be drawn into wires. For example, copper and iron can be drawn into wires. Conductivity: Metals are good conductors of heat and electricity. Heat and electricity can pass through them. Sonorous: Metals produce a ringing sound when struck hard. So, they are called sonorous. Solid: All metals are solid except Mercury, the only metal which is liquid at room temperature. (b) Physical Properties of Non-Metals Solid non-metals are soft and dull. They break down into a powdery mass on tapping with a hammer. For example, coal and sulfur. Non-metals are not sonorous. They are poor conductors of heat and electricity. They do not possess metallic luster. They possess no malleability and ductility. All the above-mentioned topics are described in an interactive and efficient manner so that the students could easily understand them.

The metal base in an electric iron is for conducting heat, not electricity. Metals are very good conductors of heat, too. That's why cooking utensils, irons, heaters, etc. are all made of metals. Metals can be easily shaped into wires. This property of metals is called ductility. Metals can be easily shaped into thin flat sheets. This characteristic of metals is called malleability. Metals make a sound when struck with hard objects. Metals can be polished to a shiny appearance. That's why gold and silver jewelry shine so much
Physical properties of metals and non-metals
Malleability: This is the property of a substance due to which it can be beaten into thin sheets. Metals are generally malleable whereas non-metals are not.
Ductility: This is the property of a substance by which it can be drawn into thin wires. Metals are generally ductile whereas non-metal are not.
Conduction of heat: This is the property of a substance by which it conducts heat. Metals are generally good conductors of heat, silver and copper are the best conductors of heat while lead and mercury are the poor conductors of heat. Non-metals are a bad conductor of heat.
Conduction of electricity: This is the property of a substance which allows to flow electrons through them and conduct electricity. Metals are generally good conductors of electricity while non-metal are bad conductors of electricity with an exception of graphite.
Others are Appearance of surface, Hardness, Density, Melting and boiling point, State at room temperature, Sonority.
All the above-mentioned topics are described in an interactive and efficient manner so that the students could easily understand them.
