Gawd, I love the 68 - never thought I would ever enjoy a modern diesel but they managed to finally make on that sounds every bit as good as the classics! I went round the fife circle in 2018 with my head out of the leading vestibule window just to enjoy the sound - first time I've done that since the early 1980s!! And don't they look smart without the yellow nose job.

They are absolutely amazing. Just a pity they're not being utilised fully by TPE

@@isaac_trains1273 I agree ! Nothing comparable here in Germany! Just the old 218ers with MTU engine.

Had it at 95dB very loud for a modern loco limit in industry is 90dB.

If I was a train operator. I would gladly take 5 sets of these CAF Mk5a sets and use these with a Class 250 (repurposed Class 60's) here in Northern Ireland for express passenger work. The 11 Class 250's would be 95mph dual purposed locomotives with the same C125 unit from Caterpillar with HEP mode for passenger train power supply mode as well. I would run these between Londonderry and Dundalk via Belfast. Coleraine, Lisburn, Antrim, Ballymena etc in between. Also the Class 250 being 6 axles ex-Class 60 modernised and altered in most ways will solve the weight limitation problem as the Class 68 would be too heavy for Ireland being a 4 axle locomotive. Regauging stock and locos isn't a problem as it would be done by Progress Rail, Beacon Rail etc that I would lease the stock from. I am working on this project right now and I would like to build a team.

Only just getting back into trains and fell in love with the noisy push/pull loco, which are a throw back to the old BR things I loved from the 70/80’s, whilst on our day trips to Scarborough. Fairly gutted they are getting the chop.

The new stadler locomotives we are getting in NZ have the same prime mover as the class 68. Hope they sound as good

The class 68 is the best sounding loco on the the planet for me. After our very own class 071 in Ireland ;) They actually have some similarities in the rumble / vibrations at times.

I don’t understand why that TransPennine Express wants to not use the Class 68 Mk5 Nova 3 rolling stocks anymore. I think it’s a absolute shame.

Very unreliable but unfortunately. They found a lot of cracks in the frames of the MK5 coaches and the 68s kept breaking down

@@jamesnicolson6833Chiltern Railways, and ScotRail still use the 68 Diesel locos, but I think TPE were the only rail operator to use the Nova end carriage.

Shame the sound of these locomotives is driving them out in some areas. I’d love to see them working in Devon and Cornwall. I think they’d be far better working the Dawlish section , with the occasional high tide and easterly.

Grand Central should take these on and get rid of its awful 180s
