Class 56 , 58 and 37 locomotives at Crewe in the scrap heap !

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Took a walk around the former loco depot at Crewe !. It has now home to stored locos and scrap ones as well. Several 56's and one sorry looking 58 thats finished !. Also a lone class 37 426 in the weed filled yard out the back of the shed.
I made this film as i am a driver on freightliner and the depot is "out of bounds to the public" !.

I remember the 56 being introduced, and it's up there with the 47 in my favourite locos, BUT it riles mes me when people spout on about keeping British locos, while they drive in their German cars to video trains on their Japanese-built camcorders and upload them to their Malaysian-built PCs. It's all about money - if the accountants thought it would be cheaper to keep a 56 running than a 66, then it would happen. BTW they shut down the place which built the first 66s due to 'market forces'

Crewe Diesel Depot... We used to hit this place in it's heydey back in 1980 at night via the bottom end of Gresty Lane and cross the tracks near the signalbox. Security was very tight then - Security patrols with dogs between the lines of loco's. We still managed to get every loco number in the place - then nonchalantly leave via the front entrance... I was only 15years old at the time. Back then hardly a weed or spot of rust in sight anywhere...How times change...

Class 37s are STILL working commercially on British railways circa 50+ years since they're introduction, decades after contemporary locos were withdrawn and scrapped. What's the secret behind the longevity of this particular class of locomotive?

i work at eggborough power station in yorkshire been there 31yrs and can remember the class 56's many of the numbers i reconise must have tipped thousands of the merry go round coal train's.i think they named 56030 eggborough power station.56073 and 56074 were remote when tipping so the driver could sit back and have his snap.they all used to park up at knottingley depot at weekends.happy day's.it' all class 66's now and they don't seem the same as the old smokey smelly 56's.

@Reayism I know what you mean about these old locos, but i do like the class 66s. Again though, this does saddened me that all that work was put in to make these but now they are left to rot away... I mean the class 58. Amazing loco. That is the loco that most saddens me.

i allways was after a aircraft cockpit, to turn into a flight simulator, i love the deltics and class 37 types, are there any old rusty train cabs, left in any of these yards, to save a cab would be at least something, to try and keep for future generations, problem is knowing "WHERE" to get one, even a old one smashed to bits as long as the cab is ok, i wish i could save one. :(

@Rabbitbunvoo i totally agree. 66s are ok but they are far too common and they're all the same. However DRS and some other companies have been purchasing grids and 37s from DBS so we could see a a return of some older engines

Here we are British engineering at its finest! Left to deteriorate over time and let other countries sell their trains to us. Cheaper to update engines and safety systems in these sorry state British built locos. I hope they get bought by preservation railway groups.

Very few want to ride behind preserved Diesel locomotives. Steam is the big draw nowadays. If you don't believe me, look at the number of "preserved" 37s and 47s hanging around rusting in sidings. Nobody wants to ride behind them, and not enough money to restore them. 56s would be even worse.

What's the prerogative on scrapping a loco? Is it reliability, or type or mileage or policy? Some of them look in pretty good condition. Far better than what are running on rails in a lot of the world. Seems like a waste to me to be honest. Thoughts anyone?

I realise that, yes. What I specifically meant was could they be reconditioned to run on slightly different gauge tracks/overhaul the diesel power plant? Most of those probably have Maybach engines in - I know they last.

Such a shame to see these loco's rusting for years, 1 question I want to ask is: Why are the doors, windows etc left open, is this to help the rusting process and make them more difficult to return to service if needed..? Just become a member of the Class 58 group (shame its not 001 or 050 as they are the most important ones of the class) & can't wait for 016 to do a few Railtours & Diesel Gala's, I may put the group in my will so they can have some money when I go..

56,58 and 60 classes were wasted! Surely it would be cheaper to convert these locos with lower maintenance powerplants than to just bin them!? Even with all the mainlines going electric, just hit up Siemens or Alstom for AC powerplants that fit into these things and convert them to electric. Seems so stupid to bin perfectly usable locos simply on the high service costs and low availability.
