CLASS 52 RETURNS!! | D1015 "Western Champion" pulls its FIRST mainline charter in 8 YEARS | 14/04/24
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
I made my way down to Coventry to see the first mainline tour of a class 52 in 8 years. It was nice to see in its lovely blue livery and it was kicking out a ton of clag. Sadly I didn't get any tones but as usual it was nice to see. I would like to thank my Grandad for making this possible. Please subscribe because it would really help me out.

With Western Lady, the SVR now has 4 Class 52 Westerns, Western Champion, Ranger,Courier and Lady.

Sounds stupendous 😊
Super video shots of the Western. 👍
When diesels looked smart, stylish with clean lines. Not like today when the new traction looks like a carbuncle with Christmas Tree style paint jobs

Yeah they look so good but the new traction is what you said

And yes sounded like a diesel! The personification of power is unbeatable from a Western or similar first generation locomotives ; unlike the modern 💩
13 and a Duff. Didn't seem to bother the Champ at all.
Great video.
I don't know what they've done to it but those exhausts look super clean

It has MTU engines now that are a direct development of the Maybach

@@AndreiTupolev Engines are Maybach MD655 as originally fitted. Although of German design they were built under licence by Bristol Siddeley of Birmingham.
Awesome Oscar 👌

Oh remember being pulled along with these units ...swinetown to london return etc. On brunel's wonderfull railway ...great german yes, german enginering here ....another reality stolen after w.w.2 from german enginering ......
You captured that excellently. The approach of a Western has always been very stately, I guess something about Misha Black's design does that, and the sound when they pull away especially at full power.
sounding nice!

Seems strange to see a Western on Mk2 air con coaches! Will always need a loco on the rear for electrical power when hauling this type of stock. Unless a generator coach is utilised. It was the inability to be used on Mk2 air con which was a factor in their demise. EDIT PS It looked like a generator car on the rear!

I really like the colour, much better than the washed out BR blue I remember. Western Sentinel used to be about the worst example. I have many happy memories of stopping off outside Laira on the way to our summer holiday in Newquay & getting up early on a Weekend to watch the specials run in, they were nearly always a Western.
Lovely. Not a patch on a full bore Napier Deltic start though😄

Oh also this is a TEST RUN so they didn’t want to over stress her (from an ex fitter tester). Remember Westerns one day on a Merehead stone train next day The Riviera never saw a Deltic on a freight train as they always had problems running on both engines under 5 mph! Did you know, not that it’s relevant GM went to Merehead when designing the class 59 and took the basic shape from D1010. Their nickname SHEDS is because GM basically straightened out the roof line of a class 52!

Did I read many years ago when the class 59 was being designed foster yeoman insists the 59 should have a slight appearance of the westerns,@@vernongoodey5096
