This was thought to be the end of the 50s on the network who would have thought that 26 years later they would be back on the mainline in use as Freight Locos amazing well done GBRF 😮🙂

Following up an Mr Molyneux's comments, It was indeed something very special to be on this railtour, looking back on it nearly quarter of century later, it still has many memories, the last 50-hauled service on BR, but far more importantly the last five minutes of the recording showing the arrival at London Paddington are personally very special to me personally, as this was the last time I was in London with may mum and dad, ten months later, my father passed away and things were in a way so different.

I find it very sad watching this, a truly great locomotive class and will be fondly remembered.

What a trip that must have been! The horns sounding at Paddington made my hair stand on end. For me, the 50s are up there with Deltics.

Not only is it good to know that both of these locos are still with us, but also there are 18 preserved examples which is the most number of a single class in preservation. Plus with 50021 operational now, that only leaves iirc 50002, 29 and 30 under restoration. A great achievement

It must have been a privilege to have been on that trip. I'll never forgive my Sister for choosing that date for her wedding! My last 50 railtour was to Glasgow a few weeks earlier and that was a top tour too. My 2nd favourite diesels behind the 40's.

+Alan Molyneux Very polluting and outdated traction. Good to see them cut for scrap and melted down.

John Garland You are the one without a brain if you disagree. It is completely logical and appropriate to scrap outdated traction units and use the resources to build more up to date machines and items.

Skoda130 You have a small point, but railways exist to make money. These engines cost a lot to maintain and preserve. Too often you will see railfans clamour that everything should be preserved. Are they willing to spend £100,000s of their own cash? Nope. The cry is always "They" should preserve this. Exactly who "They" are is not defined.

I love the way they sounded the horns at the very end - a bit like 'The Last Post'. I have a few reels of super 8 sound film of unrebuilt class 50s (and class 40s) 1979-83. Must convert it to video someday. Does anyone have access to a flying spot telecine machine?

how old were you when they finished?5 maybe? having vacs now just isnt the same as it was back then. 7&50 will never be back on the main line, they just cost to much to keep them all running,ie it can cost 30 grand to sort out a flashover!
