you are so right gary!! Hancock the superb!! arguably the best corps commander in either army!! as no less an authority edwin coddington states in his epic GETTYSBURG- A STUDY IN COMMAND! HANCOCK HAD 3 DAYS OF BRILLIANT GENERALSHIP! I MUST BE CANDID THOUGH. I LIKE MANY OTHERS CANNOT STAND THE INSUFFERABLE HOWARD. IF ANYONE DESERVED THE THANKS OF CONGRESS IT WAS HANCOCK! YES GIVE HIM CREDIT FOR SELECTING CEMETARY HILL AS A FALLBACK , BUT HIS HANDLING OF THE FIRST DAYS BATTLE LEFT ALOT TO BE DESIRED. HIS HEADQUARTERS ON EAST CEMETARY HILL WAS TOO FAR AWAY FOR HIM TO MAKE DECISIONS IN A TIMELY MANNER.

The story of the near loss of Cemetery Hill is very personal. My great-great-grandfather was part of an artillery unit posted on the west side of the hill (2nd W. Virginia) as part of the artillery reserve under Hunt. Their marker is along the cemetery fence between the civilian cemetery and the military cemetery. During this fighting, they pulled their cannons out of their positions and "walked" them through the cemetery, posting on the ridge overlooking the Baltimore Pike. They were firing cannister into the flank of the Louisiana Tigers as they overran the crest of the hill and were part of the effort to repulse this attack, after which they moved back to their original position and then participated in the counter-battery fire before PIckett's charge as well as the repulse of that attack. My family were German immigrants living in Wheeling VA (later WVA) when the war broke out, only in the USA for about a decade, and joined their unit very early on, fighting up and down the Shenandoah valley, then with the Army of the Potomac from 1862 until Appomatox.

Long time fan of Garry and now a big fan of the History Traveler. I am from Long Island, NY and for the past 25 years have been a part of a living history group who portrays Company H of the 119th New York Volunteer Infantry. The original company was recruited from Long Island in the fall of 62. Some of the regiment were upstaters but most of the companies were filled by German immigrants. Being part of the 11th Corp this unit was hotly engaged on the first day of the battle. Company H was initially used as skirmishers that day and later with the rest of the regiment would be a part of the delaying action that allowed some of the artillery to escape through town. Anyway on the night of July 2nd the 119th was one of two regiments taken from the lines that were in the cemetery across the road and thrown into action to support the artillery in saving their guns. In the dusk they beat the enemy off the guns and retook the field from the NC and LA troops who made that attack. Whenever I visit Gettysburg I feel very close to those fellow Long Islanders.

An ancestor of mine, an Irishman named John Rourke, served with the 1st PA Light Artillery-Battery F. Also known as Ricketts Battery. They were positioned on East Cemetery Hill on the evening/night of July 2nd between Weidrich's and Reynold's batteries with Stewart's battery to their rear. The battery itself had 6 guns. My ancestor survived the onslaught from Col. Hayes and his Louisiana Tigers. Rourke's commanding officer, Capt. Robert Bruce Ricketts wrote a pretty detailed account of the action. The battery was told to hold the position to till death or reinforcement, they were completely unlimbered and sent their horses to the rear. They used every round of canister and grape shot, firing up to 4 rounds a minute. The gunners were eventually ordered to cut the fuses off their rounds so they would explode almost immediately coming out of the barrel. Once the position was breached by the Confederates, the gunners were fighting with whatever was at hand, using everything from their handspikes to stones. A rebel lieutenant was killed while trying to capture the battery's flag, he was shot down by the flag bearer himself. The battery's flag was briefly captured but a Lt. Brockway fell the rebel with a stone then shot him with his own musket. Ricketts claims some cried "Death on our own State soil, rather than give the enemy our guns." Carroll's Brigade with the 2nd Corps came to their rescue and Confederates retreated in the confusion. The battery retook their position and guns and fired some "Parting salutes, in the form of double shotted canister".

I don't know how you manage tp do it, but you make myself, and others I hope, feel like we are right there with you. Your cinematography is incredible and you can actually feel the history through the video. The only thing missing is the sound of the battle and smell of the smoke but it's not far away in one's imagination. The memorials are beautifully done pieces of art as well. You should have a history show on television. Lord knows we need real decent programmes on TV instead of the mindless drivel on there now.

I really enjoy your videos. I’m in my 50s and never really knew a lot about the Civil War. Last January, I saw a documentary and became ‘addicted’ to it - especially Gettysburg! I would credit a lot of that to the animated battle map of Gettysburg on American Battlefield Trust- I’ve watched it several times. In fact, one should watch that before watching any Gettysburg movies so the movies make more sense.

The land east of the large tree on the stone wall at the crest of the battery was my families land, Peter & Rebecca Raffensperger which was 6 acers directly across from the Evergreen Gate House, Raffensperger's Hill.. Their daughter Anna Raffensperger married Henry Culp, of Culps Hill and farm. The stories of this battle on the second day and at night are truly amazing. And a turning point in this 3 day battle. Thank you for a great presentation.

Best way to see this part of the battlefield is in the winter with no leaves on the trees, almost all of which weren't there during the battle and those that were quickly came down. It gives you a great impression of the Union perspective of the position. The real payoff though, is to then walk out into that field and see it from the Confederate perspective as they approached. If you think the view from the Union picket line back up the hill is imposing, go walk that field with no leaves on the trees and look at all the cannon that are enfilading your advance. The fact that Early's men made it to that hill at all amazes me to this day.

Great as always, one thing to note is some of the battery's were in other bad battles earlier in the war, in which they were forced to retreat so they mad it a point to stay I believe the order was "hold until death or reinforcements " Also one of my favorite stories from this area is one of a Louisianan taking a cannon and proclaiming it for Robert e lee to which the gunner in German responded "you can have it " before pulling the lanyard on the loaded cannon.

With the green trees, I get the feeling it's not March anymore 😁. Looks like this series is going to get a bit longer 👍. Here's a ghost story for you JD (not that I believe in that sort of thing) but supposedly during the battle, one of the men manning the guns got his arm blown off. His buddy later stumbled across it in the dark and knowing who it probably belonged to, he buried it in one of the lunettes. The man who lost his arm later died, but can be seen to this day in the early twilight searching for that arm amoung the cannons.

Some of the War of 1812 was fought right around where I live. I actually live in "enemy territory" as the British and Canadian troops had abandoned where I live and had retreated to Burlington Heights. Was in St. Davids yesterday and it was burned by American troops in July 1814. The commander of the US forces, L/Col. Isaac Stone, exceeded his orders and the wanton destruction of St. Davids was considered an outrage by both British and American forces and ultimately because of that, L/Col Stone was cashiered out of the US Army. Was also through the high ground of the Battle of Lundy's Lane as well. I wonder how many of the people I saw yesterday were even aware of the history that took place right around them? I love the history of my area and to walk the battlefields is an amazing thing. I also do 1812 re-enacting and to be in uniform on the actual battlefield is nearly like travelling back in time. If it gets even one person more interested in history, it's worth it.
