I love how "Bubu" the mechanical owl seems as if if he's just there for comic relief, then becomes an essential hero at the end of the movie.

The owl is not a comedy effect. The owl is the most representative symbol of ancient Greek civilization. In ancient Greece, the owl was considered the messenger and pet of the goddess Athena, and was also considered a symbol of Athena. There are owls on the flag and currency of Athens Symbols, and Athena loves heroes the most, and Athena blesses the ancient Greek heroes behind their adventures. There are a lot of ancient Greek movies with owls, and if you've seen an Odyssey animation, they also have an owl on the boat.

Same here. And I wonder today, why my parents alowed me to watch it. It doesn't seem to be a movie for young children.
@markv1274

@@aiviloVideo Why not? It's a fairy tale. It teaches children values, it has imagination. You know what it *doesn't* have? *Vulgar language!* I watched this movie on television as a child. Many years later, it still stands up. No sequel, no endless franchise, just one movie that stands the test of time. If you have a problem with this movie being shown to children, then you must be appalled by the crap at the multiplex these days.
Absolutely brilliant. I love these old monster movies.
Can we just take a moment to appreciate how great the soundtrack is and how it changes from despair to hope as the hero arrives. It's so crisp sounding. And the stop motion of Harryhousen shows that he was a master of his craft.

This scene, in the original version, is SO much better than the remake. Even the scene of Medusa hunting down Perseus in her palace had far more tension and forboding than the modern remake. For its time, this film was a masterpiece, and still holds up well against modern CGI crap.
One of the best movies in it's time. I remember when it came out.

I loved this movie. It's still one of my favorites. I was always bothered by how long it took him. I mean, the Kraken WAS RIGHT THERE! It's looking at her and Perseus is like...in the mountains? Then it looks at her some more. Now he's over the palace. Then it looks some more at her, makes grabby hands, and THERE HE IS! But he can't get the freaking bag open!!! This killed me as a child, Lol.
This Medusa was way scarier looking than the new version.
I remember this movie. But good lord the editing on this. The longest wait, flight, untying of a bag in cinema history
Bubu is a mix between C3PO and R2D2 😂

Stop motion was already on its way out by 1981, but as a kid you didn't care because there was so much imagination and adventure going on! So wait....if he threw Medusa's head into the ocean does that mean he's turning all the fish to stone?!?!?

The Stop Motion of Kraken is great
I kinda felt sad for the Kraken. He's kept in an underwater cage in complete isolation from the outside world, he's probably kept starving so he's compelled to eat the first thing he sees, and then he innocently looks at Madusa's head....and then in a final cry he's turned to stone. I hope in his death his soul can be free 😢

Respect to the OG movies ✊️✊️
Great movie with an amazing soundtrack that matches the scenes!!
Saw this in the theater when I was 12, still remember it being a lot of fun.
The Greek legends also says that when Perseus threw Medusa’s head in the ocean, the current caused the head to roll around on the ocean floor turning all the plant life into coral.
At 03:35, the discus throw! How he threw the gorgon's (Medusa) head. I think it was added to the Olympics.
Ol' Andromeda is pretty casual about the whole thing. Olivier-level acting here.
This movie is superior to the remake ... ironic.

This Kracken looks like a sea monkey with 4 arms. I love the design on the remake was more like a marine chimera. Squid, sea turtle, and crab rolled into one.
Good effects for its time It’s amazing seeing the evolution of effects and what they could do at the time Big monsters coming out of the ocean are scary
Very beautiful❤
I love this movie 😍😍😍😍😍
Like they said in Boy Scouts, select the right knot for the job.
The genius ray harryhausen..
Still the greatest Greek myth to film ever made! Not completely accurate to the story of Perseus but still amazing music, cinematography and overall mythical atmosphere!
That old guy must be thinking whytf i signed this film
My childhood memories
Why would Perseus chuck Medusa's head into the sea, isn't that rather irresponsible, then every fish that looks at her would turn to stone.
This scene is the best in all eons

Nice film.
This movie is before my time but it became one of my favorite movies when one of my English teachers showed this when teaching Greek mythology. I really enjoyed the story and the stop motion. The remake came out and I wanted to check it out. It was ok but the 1981 is much better than the other one
Oh! I didn't look closely at the title. I just knew there was a 1981 movies about this. Loved the new movies with all the CGI glory. you can really feel how this scene is imagined.
3:36 "and that's why we cannot eath fish anymore, my son"
I love the fact that all sealife in the area become stone after the head toss.
Cool
It's kinda funny and cool at the same time that the actor playing Perseus would reprise his role in God of War 2. It doesn't end well for him though.
Relíquia ❤
This scene cracked me up. 😁

@stompchunkman4248

At least in Fire Emblem, they mention that pegaso move by "kicking" the air, not by flapping their wings. So, they're really doing a similar motion to this one, galloping, while I imagine the wings are for steering and gliding.
@davidtatro7457

@Stomp Chunkman lol, that makes even less sense given how little air displacement s hoof would have. Now granted, I'm not going to be pedantic about applying physics to magical flying horses. But it might be cool to see one on screen using its legs to walk and its wings to fly, as one might expect.
@stompchunkman4248

The one that comes to mind to me is Hercules' pegasus in the Disney movie. While having cartoony motions during comedy moments, it does move by beating its wings during the more serious moments.
