CLARITY process: interview with Karl Deisseroth at Stanford University

Combining neuroscience and chemical engineering, researchers at Stanford University have developed a process that renders a mouse brain transparent. The brain remains whole - not sliced or sectioned in any way - with its three-dimensional complexity of fine wiring and molecular structures completely intact and able to be measured and probed at will with visible light and chemicals.
This interview with Karl Deisseroth, MD, PhD, explains the work and how it fits into neuroscience research and other research applications.

Optogenetics...now CLARITY. Truly amazing! Nobel Prize material.
Our understanding of the brain and its connectivity within deep circuits will take a quantum leap forward as a result of the work done by Dr. Karl Deisseroth and staff who are nothing less than neuroscience champions. Congratulations!

and where do they us these tools? What if I have a very complex neurological illness that all current tests fail to detect. Where would I find someone with this?
Does the CLARITY technique keep the tissue alive, or does the replacement of lipids with hydrogels render it nonfunctional like traditional clearing?
