Clarinet Lesson: Playing Fast, Technical Passages With More Expression

Музыка

Michelle Anderson, founder of Clarinet Mentors (www.learnclarinetnow.com), presents a short video that helps you to play fast technical passages with much more expression and phrasing. This can apply to any fast passage of music. The example used in this video is from Poulenc's Sonata For Clarinet - 3rd movement (see excerpt at: www.clarinetmentors.com/resour...)

I like to play at the speed I can sight read(articulation included). That way, you use the right part of yr brain(conscious part), and are in full appreciation of the beautiful formation and skill in the written composition of any given composer.

Hi Nathalie - Mouthpieces really respond differently for different people, so the ideal thing to do is go to a music store and try as many as you can. See what responds well down low, and up hight, and try some different articulations. Usually the "right" mouthpiece is pretty obvious. Your reeds may act stiffer or softer, so bring a few. I would add to your list to try the Vandoren M13 Lyre and the M30.

How to prepare for auditions is a big topic...I have listed a few of my favorite preparation technics in the videos called: Performance Anxiety: How Musicans Can Handle This. You will find Part 1 and Part 2 on the Clarinet Mentors KZread channel. Many of these technics apply directly to audition prep (especially the jumping jacks and visualizing...You'll see what I mean...) - Michelle

Hi Michelle, thanks a lot for your input regarding the mouthpiece. I never knew that mouthpieces responded differently with different people! In the mean time I ordered a Vandoren B45. I am looking forward to trying it when I get it. You are indeed a teacher of teachers and I am so thankful for all your tips coming from years of experience. BTW my clarinet is at the clarinet doctor to fix a couple of leaks. Am looking forward to seeing how it improves my playing. Have a great week-end!

Thanks for another amazing video...so enriching. Michelle, my teacher recommends that i buy a B45 or B40 Lyre Vandoren mouthpiece. I am an adult and in January I will start my 3rd year of clarinet. I'd like your advice on this before buying one. Or would you recommend another brand( I read that B45 Lyre is very good too)?. Thanks

I love your videos! I am a high school student hoping to go into music. Do you have any advice for playing hard music at auditions? I find that I get really nervous and I play a lot sloppier.

+Dominic Malilay I play with a Backun grenadilla clarinet with cocobolo barrels and bells, as well as a MoBa mouthpiece. I love the way the Backun products enrich tone and make tuning much easier. Even a barrel can really improve the sound of any type of clarinet. Many of my students have upgraded their clarinets one piece at a time.
