You are the greatest teacher on KZread! Thank you!
Michelle, just acquired my high school clarinet from a grandsonb(15) who has used it for the last year and a half. He is now a superior clarinetist, good enough for his family to have purchases a professional level horn. I am 89 and have parkinson's disease and trying to re-teach myself. I like your mentor program, it's great. I am doing the low, middle and just started on upper register thanks to you. My best wishes, Ray Walther

Hi Ray, That's great! I think you will be amazed at how much comes back to you as you revisit the instrument. You may be beyond this stage already, but I do have an ebook for beginners that has about 10 videos attached to it. You can download it at: www.clarinetmentors.com/page9/index.html, or if you have an iDevice you can get it from iBooks at: itunes.apple.com/ca/book/how-to-play-clarinet-for-beginners/id880392121?mt=11. I think the videos reinforce the best habits to have as you get back into things. I hope you enjoy them! - Michelle
Hi Lisa - thanks for the feedback. I've recently switched to an entirely new recording process that is much louder. At some point, I will re-record these older videos. Hopefully you are still able to enjoy it! - Michelle
Omg I have watched so many videos on the clarinet and your video was the one that helped me play my first note. Thank you so much
Thank you so much for making these videos. I just happened to stumble upon them today and they are by far the best clarinet video tutorials i have seen so far :) Ive been playing clarinet for 6 1/2 years and im always trying to find things that will help improve my tone and fingering speed/accuracy. I cant wait to see more of your videos.
Great video - really explained the embouchure issues well - other people seem to skate over it and it's the most critical thing!
Thanks so much for making this video! It's really thorough and helped me out a lot!
Your videos are great. Thank you very much!

+Sam Johnston Thanks for the kind words. I am glad they are helpful.
Back to clarinet after it dusted for the best part of 3 decades in the corner, making me a absolute beginner again, and remembering only the wrong habits :) This first video was extremely helpful to get back in, looking forward to many more of your videos. Thank you
Great tips thank you
Thank you, Michelle, for that very nice and helpful tutorial!I actually had all the problems you mention, but now I can make my first decent tones!

Gracias! I just bought mine
very useful, thank you.
Played my first note today an I got it right!!!Thanks very helpful!!!!!!!!!!But how do you play a high note?
Hi - you should ensure that your reed is centred on the mouthpiece, and that the tip of the reed is roughly even with the tip of the mouthpiece. The opening varies from mouthpiece to mouthpiece. It should work if the reed would completely close over the hole if you pressed it shut. There are lots of good "upgrade" mouthpieces if you want a better one. It can be really helpful. I recommend going into your local music store and asking to try some (Vandoren and Selmer have nice ones around $100)
Hi - My Bb clarinet is a Buffet R13, enhanced with MoBa barrels and a Backun bell. - Michelle
These videos are great, I can get a sound out of my clarinet at last, hopefully the rest'll come with practice.

+jenny bailey If you are getting a good sound, then you just need to learn where to put your fingers (which is easier). Good luck with it.

I can get a fairly ok sound. Breathing & embouchure need improvement Only started playing about 2 weeks ago. Fingering seems quite easy- I used to played descant recorder at school.
Played my first note on a clarinet yesterday! Thanks for the great help in this video!

How exciting! If you start clarinet with good habits initially, you can learn really quickly. I hope you enjoy it!
I just managed to get a scale C,D,E,F,G a bit squeaky but I can work on that.
Hi Mchelle! I played clarinet and bass clarinet in high school and it’s been over 20 years since I last played. I recently got my instrument out and had a play of it but I had trouble getting a sound out of it. I’m thinking it’s the reed, as it is a brand new reed. As I said, it’s been a long time since I last played so I have kinda forgotten how to get a sound out of a brand new reed. What can I do to rectify this?
Please help! It seems like the space between my mouthpiece and my read is too big. I've just bought this secondhand clarinet, and I'm well aware that it's probably in a poor condition, but can I do something about this?
Nice tone Michelle! Is that a Backun barrel? I just ordered one of their Alpha Clarinets with a wood barrel/bell. I'm a woodwind doubler and need a clarinet that won't crack.

That is a Backun MoBa barrel. I love the sound quality. I'm sure you'll enjoy the Alpha!

I like your videos too, but I need headphones or a loud speaker to hear em, lol
Explain why those 11 thumbs down?
TTTTHHHHAAAAAAANNNNNNNKKKKKK YYYYYOOOOOUUUUU!!!!!!!!!! SO MUCH!!!
I like your style very much and am going to join the learn clarinet comunity. Only one thing - you said, you teach clarinet for thirty years. That must have been a mistake - you would have to start teaching being five years old.

I like your video too, but it is awfully quiet. In the future, you might want to use an external microphone plugged into the computer.
