Clarence learns the art of making friends, and it’s not easy

Ойын-сауық

Having lived his last six years in isolation from anyone or anything, one would think Clarence would be eager for companionship. But, these are one of the unknowns about rescued horses - their last. Perhaps he was bullied by horses in his previous life, we don’t know. Whatever it is, we know Clarence has a dominant streak about him when it comes to making friends. This video shows “mostly” all of it. We cut short his interaction with Bambi so as not to jar anyone, despite this being perfectly normal horse behavior. Bambi was trying to establish the pecking order with him, as she remains the leader of that group. We did not film Clarence’s interaction with Mr. Chocolate as it was rough and we were to busy watching, along with our vet, that when it became too rough, we went in and separated them. Clarence is learning, as you will see, that he can not come in and bite and kick the other horses. No one can teach him this except the other horses.

Thank you so much for this amazing video in capturing so many "dynamics" of this Herd of Personas! I say it often but once again...your compassion, patience and KEEN Soul Sense of timing/blending a cohesive family is inspiring and wonderful. (Hard to see the Eeeegos kick and squeeeel it out a bit but to let them be their true Selves and learn friendships too?! A GIFT to all!! (It seemed like everyone DREW a line in the sand when Ms Martha was messed with(?) that in its own right is heart warming. They'll all love you Clarence but don't mess with the Queen please. 🥰🙏

It isn't easy putting a new pony in with the one's you have, especially if the new boy has been on his own for a very long time and has forgotten his manners. But with time, and love they get there in the end. How are Martha, teddy and the others doing?? Did you have a Halloween party this year??? Great video thanks 💖😁

I would love to learn more about horse behavior. Why do they kick? Why do they bite? When you say wearing him down, what does that mean? How does Bambi maintain her position? Is Clarence scared? Establishing himself? Expressing dominance? I find this so fascinating. I know dogs and cats behavior very well, but not so much with horses. Thank you for sharing and allowing us to learn.

I’m sure Stacy will respond to your questions too but as a horse lover & owner of over 50 yrs, I’ll try to answer your questions too. Horses are born wether in the wild or domestically with an innate sense of how to establish & get along with other horses. First, I’d suggest you watch true life videos/documentaries on mustangs in the wild. (Stacy is an experienced, awesome horse woman too.) Monty Roberts is my favorite as he actually lived with a mustang herd for over a year & has written many books on horses. One of my favorite books to read is “The Body Language Of Horses” by Tom Ainslie. The wild horse herds (mustangs) have only one Stallion but sometimes have “lieutenants”, who are stallions too but are subservient to the lead stallion. The herds also have 1 or more lead mares that help guide & protect the other mares in the herd too. All the “aggressive” & some “non aggressive” behavior is all about establishing hierarchy among the horses. The kicking, biting, squealing, etc. is all part of the process when a new horse is introduced into an established herd. Clarence is more aggressive than scared & being chased the other horses are saying as soon as you show subservience we will start making friends with you. Bambi & the other horses are not going to allow Clarence to be aggressive with the rest of their “family.” Long explanation but always fascinating as a retired vet tech, nurse & holistic provider for humans, dogs & horses too.

@@deborahm.fodor-bode5869 My horses have been together for almost one year with no issues, and now almost daily the mini horse starts kicking and chasing my pinto pony. This just started happening after 9 months. Do you have any idea what could be happening?
