Clamping Jig (for cutting boards)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In today’s video we make a clamping jig. I plan to use this a lot in upcoming cutting board builds. I think it could be used for more than just cutting boards as well.
I took inspiration for this build from a couple of videos. Check those out here:

    I have actually wore this thing out. I used it so much for so many years that I actually need to build another one. It was so useful while it lasted Thanks for watching and thanks for commenting.

    Building mine currently from reclaim and scrap. Using nut inserts but otherwise its your design replicated. Thanks as yours is a better variant of other versions

    If you don't have clamps or don't have very many, this is the way to go.

    Not a dado. Since it is with the grain it's a groove. Even if cut with a dado set with the grain it's a groove!

    Some dowels, ripped in half along the length, might make great strips for shimming under the face cauls.

    I've seen Izzys version of this. My question is how can I make one big enough to handle big sizes. And I had the idea of using the same unit to act as a panel cutting station. I'm thinking of hanging mine from ceiling joists to save on space. As that is always a major consideration in my very small shop

  • @MyNextProject

    @MyNextProject

    Yeah that would be my suggestion. Is if you have a small shop, either have some kind of attachment that goes on top of your work bench or something like that. Or to have it go on a wall or hang from the ceiling. I made my for pretty much cutting boards only. I can definitely see an advantage for having one for gluing up table tops and large boards. It was so much cheaper than buying 4-5 clamps. I will do some thinking and see if I come up with another idea. I would like to see how yours turns out once your done if you want to share a picture on instagram, twitter, or email me one. Thanks for watching.

    nice design the onky thing i would do different is cut the u shape into the wood with the screws going up to actually put pressure on the board to get the cutting board flat or put another piece of wood on the bottom of the wood going across that way it will apply pressure to the cutting board for a flatter surface

  • @MyNextProject

    @MyNextProject

    That is a good idea. I have been looking at ways to add some extra support to this so that it won't bow when you start applying pressure. And I plan on beefing up the cross boards on top that will apply pressure as well. so far though, i really like it. It has been very handy.

    Great build, couple questions: 1.) The bolts that are sticking up, are they just holding the melamine to the uchannel boards? Do they protrude through the bottom of uchannel? 2.) Is it the end of the bolt that actually pushes the cutting board together? Don't they mess up the board edges?

  • @sroberts4797

    I made one of these following a similar video using mdf which the holes for the bolts loosened up after the first use, so I'm going to put a strip of steel drilled with holes for the bolts to go through in between the brace and board. Does that make sense?

  • @MyNextProject

    @MyNextProject

    Yes, that makes since and that should help make it much stronger. So far I have not had mine loosen up. I am not sure if that is because I cut the groove on the clamping side to wrap the melamine with it. If you have pics, you can send them to me on instagram, i am curious to see how yours turns out.

    My Next Project it actually ended up not working because my boards were a little too thin to begin with and buckled before I got something to push down on them. So by the time I planed it, it was too thin to be used as a board. Since I live in Wyoming and it was cold I was doing it in my kitchen so I’d have glue that wasn’t frozen. I also live in California for a couple months and time was running out before I had to go back. However before I could get some more boards prepared my 18 yr old daughter who’s living there came home from a trip to Hawaii and blew a gasket because the kitchen was a wreck! We had a little discussion how she didn’t “have” to live there, she “got” to live there, but I really had more important things I had to get done so I cleared it out. So aside from advice on how to make my cutting board jig better, it’d be more helpful if you could tell my husband he shouldn’t have spoiled her to think she can tell me what I can and can’t do in my house!

    want to build one,but got lost in the hole measurement. can you type them out,call it top and face is the bolts that press the cutting board.

  • @MyNextProject

    The ones on top are about 5 inches apart and the ones that do the clamping are about 3 inches apart. I spaced them kinda random, to make sure that they didn't hit other bolts in the board. On my next vlog I will show the board up close and go into more detail regarding the board so that it will help you make it better.

    hey, drilling those through holes with a forstner bit, really ??!!?!? you need some brad point bits. great project :>)

    I do. My largest bit was a little small so I had to use either the forstner bit or the paddle (spade, or wood) bit. And that has lots of tear out so I went with forstner. thanks for watching.

    I am looking around for ideas like this. And thx for sharing . But your design is flaud. The scews and glue in the plywood edge with pressure over time will come apart

  • @MyNextProject

    @MyNextProject

    6 жыл бұрын

    It could come apart over time, but the bolts would have to fail as well. There are bolts on each side of the board that are attaching the sides to the bottom. but yes, over time this project will eventually fail from use.
