it used to be a nice area. when i was a kid it was great. But sadly over the last 15 years its gone downhill with all the drug addicts moving in there and such. its not what it used to be anymore. definitely avoid Jaywick. its a hellhole. I also don't like the club in st Osyth its boring and lacks entertainment value

Used to live in Clacton in the late 50’s and 60’s. Met my husband there when I was 16. Moved to Wirral in the 70’s and have been here ever since. We will have been married 59 years this September. Have not been back to Clacton for about 20 years even though my brother and his family still live there. I loved your tour and recognised so many places but it has changed so much, for the better I mean. I used to work as a secretary to the Photographic manager at Butlins in the early 60’s and went in and out of the camp a lot. Thank you for the tour, brings back a lot of memories.

I was born and grew up in Clacton. Many happy childhood memories during the 1970’s. Butlin’s had a great swimming pool that had windows that looked out at ground level, so people could walk past and see you swimming. The town also had an annual prom race or more correctly, adult pub crawl! Great video of the town and I learnt a few things too.

I worked at Butlins as a waiter in 1980. It was the same year Billy Butlin died. All staff had to wear black armbands, but they didn't have enough To go round. The dining room was one of the largest in Europe seating a little over 4,000. I spent the whole summer season working as a waiter and it was the best six moths of my life, most enjoyable. Very upset when it was pulled down to make a housing estate. I have not been back to Clacton for over 20years. I will visit soon. Thanks Tim.

We always had a week's holiday in Clacton when I was a kid back in the 1950's. My parents knew someone -Sid - who worked on the gates at Butlins and he used to let us in sometimes. My brother and I thought it was like Paradise - everything was free in the amusement park. The indoor swimming pool was very impressive and below it there were thick glass windows so you could see the swimmers' legs thrashing about. One year there was a terrific storm and the Helter Skelter on the pier blew over as did the double Big Wheel at Butlins - there was some other major damage and somehow things were never quite the same afterwards. As we were there pre-package holidays to Spain the beach used to get really crowded especially near the pier. The Jolly Roger hosted a traditional seaside concert party - I think there was a different programme every day. I once entered a talent contest and got so nervous I wet myself on stage trying to sing Mountain Scenery of which I only knew the first line - the rest was la la la.

Such a shame you didn’t mention the other theatre in Clacton which can trace its beginnings back to 1894. The West Cliff Theatre which is located opposite the hospital and along the road from the tower and gardens, has been running a Summer variety show for 125 years. This amazing venue is run by a Trust and mainly staffed by volunteers.

I remember the Butlins in Clacton. I never actually stayed there but we used to visit occasionally when we were on holiday at the Shangri-La Caravan park in St Oyseth. Hi Tim,great video.I had a fortnights holiday with my parents in 1960 in Clacton. We had a flat very close to the pier and every evening all we could hear was The Shadows record Apache blasting out over and over from the pier, sometimes they would play the other side of the record. And on the subject of the pier,we went to watch water polo in a swimming pool actually on the pier.I do remember walking along and sailed my yacht in the boating pool and then walking further to look at Butlins.I have looked on Google streetview but cannot find the flat that we stayed in.Thanks for your videos, its great as we are stuck indoors because my wife is uneasy about going out and about.

I spent 3 childhood holidays there, once when I was very little [pre-school], in a seafront guest house, I do not remember much of this, but do remember having an inflatable model boat on a string which I sailed in a seafront model boating lake, and two Butlins holidays [ages 8 and 14]. I have watched this and several others [from Butlin's 1960s] problem is they make me want to cry when I see pictures of little kids then and realising that, like me, they are all elderly now. I notice from your film that the model boat lake, unlike Butlins, still exists.

In the short spare time I had I was impressed with the large number of seats along the seafront as I suffer a walking difficulty. The locals I met were all so friendly. An early morning walk was great as I found a seat at the end of the pier overlooking the sea. Restaurants and cafes were a disappointment, but I only looked around the seafront area. I was pleasantly surprised.

Aw such memories for me, my best friend and I spent a week at Butlins , our first holiday away from our parents. We still reminisce about the pebble dash walls INSIDE the room, a porcelain pot , only one mind lol, because the toilet block was too far to get to if you were , shall we say worst for wear, not us of course 😉, 3 planks of wood with a wire and an old piece of curtain made the wardrobe, a camp photographer took a photo of us at breakfast.... I’ll just leave that here lol , not the best of accommodation but we had a great laugh

Yeah I remember visiting Butlins for the day back in the late 1960`s, they also had a 9 hole pitch & putt nearby - about 2 or 3 years ago they were building the beach next to the pier (lefthand side as you face it) - must visit again soon, as it looks great now! - what are the parking charges for the sea front?

Yes, I do remember Butlin's vaguely, especially the ladybird roundabout, that I used to ride on, as a child, and the donkey's, that I used to on ride on too. I have a big lump in my throat on seeing Clacton, as I was born there in 1966. I've noticed a few new thing's, that weren't there, when I lived there with my parent's.

Another enjoyable but felt a bit short video (probably as we were enjoying it so much) from Clacton, so much more to see... Never stayed at Butlins but when I was growing up it reopened as Atlas Park and I was gutted never to visit, although probably just a glorified funfair it stuck in my head forever. W

i moved to clacton a couple of weeks before covid , and to be honest it IS nice to live here the neighbors are quiet the people are polite and smile and i get to walk a bit more then i used to so my health ahs improved , there are a couple of tramps and some mouthy youths but not that many and you dont have to be on the defensive all the time like in London also theres TWO pie and mash shops some good fish and chip shops (which you dont normally get at the sea side its generally tat passed off as fish and chips , a couple of pubs plenty of shops and is easy to get around

My parents lived in Martello Bay for 5 years and I would stay there every weekend. There were no palm trees on the beach back then (in fact, I've a video on my channel of my walk from their house to town, looks a lot different now). They're also friends with the owners of the pier, Billy and Elliot. Enjoyed watching that (although tbf, you did only show the nicer bits of Clacton. 😂)
