Yeah it was pretty obvious from the start, but still well executed. Its also funny to see it at a "sale price". Waves has a perpetual sale going on and I've never seen any of their plugins be listed for the full price. They could just as easily claim it normally goes for $5 million but it's on sale for $29.99.

He doesn't need to. He has a multimillion dollar studio. But best believe several other top producers will use it if they don't have the kind of gear CLA does. And really, it's not even about if HE USES IT! It's about him hooking your poor ass up with something you'd likely never be able to afford, but made it affordable for you (people). And even gave away a great secret for vocals that immediately stated using and man do my vocals sound MUCH BETTER already.

I tried the free download and liked it, but felt I wanted to be able to mix shorter and longer reverbs (like in CLA's videos). Did I miss something? This seems to counter what he was saying in the previous videos. Didn't he say that he busses his tracks to these 8 effects so that the mix will sound glued together? If this plugin only has one input, how are you supposed to adjust the send amounts to the individual effects in the plugin? Does that mean you need to insert another instance of this if you want a different fx balance? For example, if you only want your drums going through the room verb and not the vocal slap, you can't do it without adding another instance of the plugin with the slap turned off. Didn't he say his fx workflow was to prevent having different reverbs inserted on every track? Isn't that exactly what this plugin requires you to do? I'm sorry, I'm not trying to be snarky. I use Waves and CLA plugins like 90% of the time. I'm just trying to understand the thought process behind this. Seems like this would be more useful if it were 8 individual plugins. Being able to send a delay into a reverb can literally be done with 2 mouse clicks. Maybe I misunderstood his FX matrix.

  • @ErickT_MX

In my case I only would setup max 3 of this across all my project. One vocal dedicated, one synth dedicated, one drums dedicated. Do you need more instances? I think 3 it's enough. Would be great a CPU test, but seems to be CPU-friendly more if you bypass the things you don't need.

I'm afraid you're exactly right. And in case you want to pan the delays (as in not wanting the slap in the middle or having the stereo delays hard left and right) the REAL trouble begins. Another thing is, that it doesn't make sense to have a predelay on the reverbs you send the delays to; I don't think that it's a coincidence that - in the video - CLA turns the 150ms predelay down to zero the second he routes the delay to the plate.

The Waves marketing team are the most effective salesmen in the audio world. Their industry figureheads-CLA, JJP, and Scheps-are guru geniuses with the gravitas and chops to back up their advocacy of Waves products. I don’t know if Waves plug-ins are substantially better than (or even as good as) their competition, but it’s almost as if the price of their plug-ins subsidizes the wealth of wisdom gleaned from these amazing tutorials. The halo effect is blinding. Worked on me, even though I’m fully aware of what is going on from a marketing perspective. That’s a stroke of genius on Waves’ part.

Every major daw, pro tools, Ableton, logic, fl, they all let you send sends to sends in the exact same way. songwriters and non-technical mixers would pay, and it makes sense. They'll have a high quality depth plugin for 30$ that they can slap on to a vocal track in like 1 min and use some of the presets and see the possibilities. But I'm not sure they've actually targeted that niche who would actually pay to do less routing and customising.

How to do the CLA ssl + hardware matrix: To achieve the same result as the previous CLA ssl+hardware video of this series, you should do 8 busses with an instance of this plugin each with only a single of the 8 fx active 100% wet (important), then from each track you want to be affected, you create a send and send it to each (or less) of the 8 fx busses, then from the 4 delays busses you make 4 sends each to each reverb (to add the reverb to the delays). Then you can automate the sends to achieve the "fader riding" that mr. CLA does, the sends become the faders, this is better looking in daw like pro tools, in logic for example you, i think, can't create a nice looking pop-out fader for a send, so your automation would need to be done by the little knobs on every track you want to automate. I think the previous videos where a little missleading, the actual power of this plugin is speed, "presets-ready use" and "same place" automations, you load this on a buss and jump over all that routing to give that buss a lot of treatment and fader riding in the same visual place. You can't achieve the result of the previous videos, like, for example, sending the snare to only 2 of the 4 delays, and the vocals to 3, using the same plugin instance, straight inside 1 instance of this plugin cause it takes a single stereo input. That's also not very important since you can load a bunch of these plugins and do different setups for each, while CLA has to use only 8 of those outboards cause i don't think he has a bunch of the same hooked up.

You can always route the delays to some blank tracks with master send turned off, then route them to the reverbs, effectively giving you send faders in your mixing panel. I noticed that the reverbs in this dont sound as good as a dedicated reverb plug like the Relab 480 or the Slate digital Verbsuite to name 2. I punched up a room verb in Epic, ran a snare thru it and then a/b a room out of the relab and the relab has a richer tone. Same experiment with a hall reverb. The Epic plug is more convenient but doesnt have the quality sound to me. Do and A/B yourself and see.Gonna try an A/B with Lusterous Plates plug and the plate in Epic today.

I'm looking forward to a CLA Tape plugin, to use as an insert in the MixHub. I don't like either Kramer or J37. One based on Chris' machines, with several tape sounds - either different machines, or tape widths, or tape formulations - not too many, but covering the entire timbre spectre, and, as usual with Waves, with great versatility through few intuitive controls. Including noise, and wow & flutter, which are a great part of it, but often overlooked, a beautiful high-end, maybe a wear knob, who knowa? That would be beautiful. I think it would complete Chris' old-style workflow. And a great studio IR collection engineered by him, with a beautiful GUI, something in the style of UAD's Ocean Way or IK's Sunset Sound, but with no processing whatsoever - to be able to run through whatever tape or console we choose. That would pretty much cover it all, top to bottom, to capture all the signal workflow for those beautifully sounding analog recordings. And maybe a microphone converter, from a few usual cheap ones, like a 57, 58 or cheaper condensers, like NT-1A or B1, to some of the beautiful more expensive models, like an U87, in the style of IK's Mic Room. I think this time I'm really done, cause that's covering the entire signal path. Oh, and some impulse response based guitar amp emulation with a graphic cab miking interface, instead of those horrible browsers, with freely adjustable ir-based mic positioning. Something like TH-U meets MixIR, but with the positioning freedom of the new Amplitube. I think Waves needs a wide model range guitar amp emulator, and IR seems to be vastly better than the old algorithm based emulators. And now I'm really done. Oh, by the way, a drum sampler/instrument - again, with minimum processing. Some other great-console full strip emulations - like the Focusrite Forte, the A-Range Trident or the Neve 8082 - with some channel variation technology, would be a great addition to the 4000 and EMI emulation. That should cover all the stages for a full band analog recording signal path - for the legendary stuff - to have for the rest of time. Is there anything I'm leaving out?

White Sea Studio made an excellent point in his review. This plugin would be great if there were a hardware controller. Going to agree that it is not the most mouse friendly plugin....even better would be if the controller could also be used with Mixhub during bucket mode.

Would you be able to get a similar sound sending a vocal track to a delay and that delayed signal to a reverb. ....while all in the inserts? Or send the track to a chain of 4 delays in cascading fashion on to 4 reverbs, using aux tracks. Mix the aux returns and automate? Do the same thing for the drum bus? You won't be able to " paint" the sound like CLA does on an SSL but maybe you can automate the faders in the DAW and get a similar sound. And you don't always need 4 reverbs and 4 delays on a track or tracks. You can use fewer. In fact most of the time.

So THIS is the big brother of EchoSphere. How cute! Any ideas for a good track- / send- / bus-structure in our DAWs which features this epic depth?

To achieve the same result as the previous CLA ssl+hardware video of this series, you should do 8 busses with an instance of this plugin each with only a single of the 8 fx active 100% wet (important), then from each track you want to be affected, you create a send and send it to each (or less) of the 8 fx busses, then from the 4 delays busses you make 4 sends each to each reverb (to add the reverb to the delays). That's also not very important since you can load a bunch of these plugins and do different setups for each, while CLA has to use only 8 of those outboards cause i don't think he has a bunch of the same hooked up.

the point is to make you feel both enthused and like now you're missing out. and also to have something to come with for black friday, which i think was a nice gesture. both the plate and the delay are cool on their own.

Never understood dry delays when the main path is through a reverb. Parallel routing is great, but now the delay tails sound like they're in a different room. Gotta throw a reverb on that delay.

Hi Guys for anyone wondering about cpu usage here are the results.. single reverb using valhalla, tested using on board presets: valhalla vintage 0.31% vs CLA Epic 2.41% in any kind of cpu the ratio will be the same just lower or higher numerics.. so its like running 7-9 reverbs at one time.. this is still great plugin due to its advanced routing u just use it sparingly..

looks great, but if used as a send FX is it not limiting somehow in routing ? in Real /DAW mixer you send each track to each individual FX module the amount you need ,with CLA Epic seems a track sends same level to all modules ! Also the mix knob of dry/wet needs to have option to be locked when going trough the presets (if its not there already)

  • @curtiscole9151

why is it limiting tho? u can put it on an aux track with mix at 100%, send whatever u want as much as u want into the plugin in your daw and then choose how much u want to add to the signal from each of the modules, pretty easy and works great imo
