The area has been inhabited since the Upper Paleolithic, as evidenced by the archaeological findings in the area.
It is likely that the first inhabitants of the area were groups of hunters from lower altitudes, who periodically reached these mountains in search of flint and large prey.
Furthermore, some ancient necropolises testify to the presence, at least from the first millennium BC, of permanent populations who practiced both agriculture and livestock.
In fact, there are numerous burial places found in the nearby towns of Val Fondillo and Colle Ciglio, all of which date back to a period between the 6th century BC. and the 5th century BC.
With the Romanization process that followed the Samnite wars................................................................................................................................................

Your walking videos always inspire me. There is always a strange combination of beauty and melancholy in your visits to these often overlooked, small towns of Italy. Life goes on here as it has done for centuries. Yet, when the streets are empty, there is a palpable sense of loneliness. Not in the people, but in the very town itself, in the stone walls and stairways. Their older brothers of Rome, Milan, Venice are the special sons, the ones whom poets write about, historians marvel at, and musicians sing about. But the towns you visit are the quiet ones, sitting in the corners of Italy, like quiet guests at a party, curiously drawing your attention and somehow making you feel that they have stories to tell that no bigger city could equal. The streets welcomed you, as they would welcome any visitor, and they're happy that you walked the cobblestones, and saw them exactly as they are. No towering monuments. Just doors and windows and bends in the road. They are happy that you paid a visit.

Thank you so much as always dear Angela. Indeed, one of the "forgotten" towns I especially like touring as you know me well) I try to mix the crowdy and famous to the un-crowdy and un-famous from time to time. Liked the atmosphere there as in all Abruzzo I must add. Buon weekend!

Thank you , my dear friend Riccardo! I absolutely loved this walk with you as usual. As usual a great video and a great pleasure… I say as usual, because it’s always a great experience that you present perfectly for us. But every time it’s absolutely unique as well as every place that you visit is unique in look, history and character. This old town is amazing, I loved walking quietly there with you taking in every little detail - every door, every handle, every flower pot … loved seeing the local people entering or going out of their houses, hearing a lively talk in the courtyard, tourists visiting… I loved what you said in one of the comments here: that you perceive it as a mission to show the beauty of these places to the world so that people could get acquainted with them, because these places really deserve attention. It is a very noble mission and I wish you all success with it. Thank you again. Have a nice Sunday, Riccardo.

Raisa! Nice to see you back here. Glad you enjoyed Civitella and the differences between the last crowded towns I filmed (!). From time to time I get back to the "initial videos" I started with this channel, the "forgotten" towns that, as you said, I try to show for people to discover them. Very very touched that you enjoy this "journey" and that you like the way I film the towns and the details I try to show in the videos as well as the mission I'm trying to accomplish. In a way, there's SO much yet to film that whenever it's weekend, and whenever I am quite free from personal life things and work, I try to lurke around and discover these kind of towns like Civitella. Thank you, realy, for such words. Truly made my day today reading such nice words. Wish you also a nice Sunday Raisa and to the next video then Ciao

@@StillWanderer Dear Riccardo, thank you for these warm words and wishes. As always your comments as well as your videos are full of this personal warmth. You know, this is what makes them always so special. Not only this video, but every one of them. They are all personal, your personal vision and your personal warmth, and genuine interest, inquisitive and friendly humane attitude to the place, the people is always felt. It’s invisible but this warm and positive atmosphere penetrates every video. I love your attention for detail as well. This all adds to the professional technical and artistic merits of each video, and is truly important. Speaking of the places you choose - I love all of them. Love wandering in these small unknown places like Civitella with their particular charm. And visiting more renowned, more “touristy” and crowded places is also beautiful. Each place is different and charming in its own way. And what I appreciate about you and your work is that you always manage to see, to capture and to transfer for us the true unique spirit and character of every place you visit. Every walk is absolutely different, though every time one can be sure that in your company it will be a great experience. Thank you again. And , actually, it’s not that I am back.) I have never left, in fact ))) Life circusmtances are not easy for us now and it’s a second month that I am ill and on a sick leave, and that is why I missed some of your videos and was not able to comment, but I always follow your journeys and can’t wait to see those that I had to miss and those that are ahead. Your videos always make me feel good. Good luck with everything, Riccardo! Ciao!

@@Raisa93g Raisa, hard to reply to such a message actually, as I truly feel very very touched by your words and I had to re-read the message to see they were so kind as I firstly read them. It's also hard to reply because it's not always easy to say thank you here through a chat so easily or without showing any emotions, but truly, I'm enormously glad that the videos are liked and that they can provide some kind of escape from our day-to-day realities. Especially because... they do the same to me while filming! I've always liked traveling like this with my ex often, or with friends, sometimes alone, but I must add that I started this channel back in 2019 after a difficult period; it was a post-breakup time that didn't finish too well with my ex girlfriend. At that time we still were on and off, kinda, but then time passed, life went on for both, and then it's now becoming a distant memory. And to actually not think too much about it I decided to show the "unusual" towns of Italy as I saw they weren't shown (I saw the usual big cities all around KZread back then). Slowly slowly life went on, that pain associated to that story slowly slowly faded in the past (even though every story never leaves us I believe, as every scars remind us of who we are...), and this little channel continued to be a nice hobby that (...and I never thought about this...) continued to live and grow like a small plant. What the futue will hold? I don't know! But as I always say..."as long as I find happiness in doing this hobby I'll continue". Anyway... long message and all. "Grazie di cuore" as we say and to the next then Ric

Thank you Asbjørn; actually you're right there. Compared to other towns (especially nearby towns in Abruzzo region) I saw also less "greenery" around - for some reasons it's a little like that. Perhaps many houses were also very empty unfortunately. Depopulation hit these towns strongly and I try to film them as to let more tourists come in hopefully as they deserve to be discovered. Love the famous crowded towns as you see, but from time to time I love to also show the less famous ones. Wish you a nice weekend and thanks again

Thanks for this video, Riccardo. It's always good to see all of what Italy is made out of. Small and almost abandoned town. This town looks as if it was really beautiful place. If only painted it could be a little paradise. Some parts are painted where I see people around. It has a lake and nice surroundings. I enjoyed it anyhow, it's different from other small town I have seen in central Italy kept well with flowers all over.

Dear Esther, Indeed, Civitella is indeed a different town compared to others in central Italy, and Abruzzo especially. It may have been the season (spring), or the time... Or the reason that it's a town quite depopulated but if was a little "rougher" in its way. A rough beauty one would say! But love these "forgotten" towns as you know. Truly love them. I filmed some more around and slowly slowly I'll upload them. Wish you a nice Sunday dear Esther and ciao

Splendid Lago di Barrea, which shines like a great gem set in the exuberant vegetation. Artistic, geometric, meticolous and innumerable paving on the streets. Beautiful stone arches in the lintels of the houses. Very few inhabitans. Beautiful old photographs, full of children and people of the time. Why did ancient italians wear almost all black ? Thank you, Riccardo of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Dear Juan, as always you're able to just grasp the atmosphere like I fail to put into words. Truly one of those towns where time seems to have stand still for so centuries. Lake Barrea was Interesting, I was watching it nearby, beautiful area! Good question about why they wore black: usually the black colour was for older people when people were suffering a loss in family... Those black dresses had to be wore for many many years and hence it became a kind of way also for other people and ages in general. This happened often on center-south of Italy though . This is what I think, not sure it's the correct one! I like the new nick) in fact I recently saw some other towns in Latium so...more to come. Wish you a nice Sunday dear Juan and thank you for such kind words
