Civil War Cavalry: Develop the Relationship With Your Horse

Training a cavalry horse starts with developing a great relationship with your mount. While not explicitly in Poinsett's, you must work with your horse on a regular basis. The weekend of the event is NOT the time to train. This week, we will discuss some thoughts on working with your mount.

Makes me realize how much I don’t know about horsemanship. Good information and instruction.

This would be a great demonstration while doing a bivouac or event. A lot of people would love to watch and listen. You have good in-structural personality .

Sounds like my veteran horse. Gave him to one of the rookies because I knew that anyone could handle him and once he knew that he didn't have to perform he was grazing in front of the cannons as they were going off

Horses are not like cars or other mechanical devices. A Cavalry horse is like the human combatant that rides them. A Cavalryman that has the soldier on his back will do everything for him as a weapons platform from his master's carbine to his saber. That horse will have to maneuver in combat with no hesitation through loud noise and confusion. That today a horse trained in the Cavalry is very rare as gold.

My grandfather was in the Horse Cavalry prior to WW1. He told me they were trained to steer with their knees.

I think that's a standard riding technique for cavalry and just adept horsemanship. As a rider, it is much more comfortable to have your hands free and just use your legs for steering, and this is an essential skill for cavalry riders as they have to be able to control the horse And be ready for combat and handling weapons

Horsemanship was very important. Being able to ride a horse isn't the same as knowing horsemanship and understanding a horse.

A good horseman does not blame the horse. It is not the horse it is the human.

You are correct. You lnow nothing about horsemanship, horse training, horses in general, and not anything about the US Cavalry
