Civil rights attorney Ben Crump speaks with family of US airman shot by Florida deputy

Ойын-сауық

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump holds a news conference with the family of Roger Fortson, a 23-year-old Air Force airman who a Florida sheriff's office deputy fatally shot.
--
Deputies responding to a disturbance call at a Florida apartment complex burst into the wrong unit and fatally shot a Black U.S. Air Force airman who was home alone when they saw he was armed with a gun, an attorney for the man’s family said Wednesday.
Senior Airman Roger Fortson, 23, who was based at the Special Operations Wing at Hurlburt Field, was in his off-base apartment in Fort Walton Beach when the shooting happened on May 3.
Civil rights attorney Ben Crump said in a statement that Fortson was on a Facetime call with a woman at the time of the encounter.

I am so tired of seeing stories like these where a totally innocent young man is taken away by law enforcement. I am even more sick and tired of these people trying to cover up their screw ups! This should have never happened and I hope this family gets the justice they deserve. Ty you for bringing up a fine young man, a man who was serving his country! We are praying for you and your family.

Veteran here. Not to incite hate, but this is the kind of crap that makes me despise police forces. What kind of friggin lackadaisical knucklehead(s) couldn't even manage to provide officers with the CORRECT address? To the officers: If you don't friggin announce yourself, or allow yourself to be viewed when at a service member's doorstep, then break through said door, what do you expect is going to happen? We are usually armed in our homes. Absolutely ridiculous, unacceptable, and lends itself to the sentiment that the majority of you make me no safer. Terribly sorry to the family here. Of course they already dealt with knowing there is a small possibility this service member could be lost in his duty to his country, only to lose him by total and absolute incompetency.

@LouSassol69 So, yes, I seem to have been misled on two aspects by written articles earlier in the day. 1. The officer did announce himself (outside of the view of the door, which I suppose could be a positive or a negative depending on how one would like to look at it.) 2. Door was opened by the resident. What still isn't awesome is immediately shooting at the sight of a firearm. Is it smart to answer the door to police with a firearm in your hand? Probably not. Do I feel like I should be immediately shot if I did? Probably not. I'm sure you, and others, will enlighten us though as to how my thinking is "flawed" though. So there's that.

Where is the Dept of Justice and the F.B.I.? There needs to be an investigation and charges against these trigger-happy, incompetent police officers. That airman was doing exactly what i would done under those same circumstances. I would have armed myself if some clown was beating on my door and not identifying themselves. And even if they identified themselves as police, that doesn't mean that they are in fact the police. It could have been anyone "claiming" to be the police.

I dont usually agree with this lawyer but the cop in this situation didn’t give him a chance before saying anything he raised his weapon and shot the man no warning nothing… man opening the door had the weapon pointed down… wtf? The cop pulled his weapon out and still the man didn’t raise his weapon and the cop instead of giving a warning or demand just filled the man up with bullets almost the whole clip insane…

The person that spoke with the Police after entering the premises; and saying that she heard loud noise, and the noise is getting worst, and also told the Police the Officer's exact Apartment number; where, and which apartment is she living on. where do she live? I follow the video camera and i saw the Police took the elevator up then had to walk passed soo many doors or apartments through this long hallway, then to a long and winey hallway, then they continued to walk to a very long hallway to another end of the end of the building before they could reached the officer's apartment. What kind of loud noise could this person have heard from where he or she is living to call and said they heard loud disturbances from the distances where she/he lives. The person that made the phone call probably knew his address before and knew he was living in such apartment number. That person certainly has a clean ears that can hears every one on the compound's business from a distance. Smh

The police had his information and new he had a weapon ,that's why they covered the peephole and didn't announce who it was so he would have his registered gun in his hand when they burst in. Do you know how foolish you sound? Yep they planned it out and knew he was going to answer the door with a gun so they could intentionally kill him. Yea that makes total sense.... They would have to be pretty good to plan that out to a T like that. Also, they didn't cover the peephole or bust through the door. Obviously you guys didn't see the badge cam before commenting about stuff that didn't happen. It's already a terrible situation that happened, we don't need to add stuff to make it sound even worse.
