Instead of Freezing and going into the Layer State Manager dropdown (or pop-out) to unfreeze, I prefer to use the Isolate button in the Home tab under Layers. Then using the Unisolate button below it to bring everything back after making any edits. It seems to work smoother than isolating layers by right clicking in the Layer State Manager.

Hi Steve, Thanks that is my goal, give the directions that you might be looking for and not a lot of junk that everyone knows. It drives me nuts as well when other guys ramble on about things not related to the question.

Realy nice workflow, man! Although, how'd u get those surface styles? I'm looking for a 1 to 5 for a while....

Hello Vitor. All of those surface styles are part of the _AutoCAD Civil 3D NCS.dwt, this is the template that comes with the package, there is an (Imperial) version as well as a (Metric). If you are only seeing 'Standard' as your option then you might want to move the drawing into a template or pull parts from a template to your drawing.

When you use contours for surface model data you will sacrifice some fidelity. For the data of the type shown here (probably a LIDAR mapping) it is usually not a big deal. But for more detailed surfaces, such as for a parking lot design - you are going to lose the fine detail of what is going on between the contour lines. Better to get the TIN and create your surface from that.

When you say get the TIN what do you mean exactly? I'm working on using civil 3D as a tool to easily grade (in the teaching sense of the word) and iterate lots of easy grading assignments for landscape architecture students. So we work on the scale of parking lots a lot

@@morganhenson2925 TIN stands for riangulated rregular etwork. It in the network of triangles you get when you develop a DTM (ie/igital errain odel), sometimes of 3d lines, sometimes of 3d faces depending on the software. Those 3d lines and/or faces can be used as data to create a DTM that will be identical to the DTM they were generated by. Another way to transfer a DTM is by exporting a LandXML file from the source DTM, and importing it to your project drawing. But the point of my original comment is that if you use contours as data to create a DTM you sacrifice the detail that exists between the contours.

I'm using a large Lidar topo for the county I'm working in, and I keep getting fatal errors. I've tried joining the contour lines and trimming out what i don't need, but I'm still getting the fatal error. Any suggestions?
