Plessy v. Ferguson- why say the "South" could have separate but equal accommodations when Brown v. Board happened in Kansas? In other videos, you have stated that Supreme Court decisions affect the entire country (and they do). As I recall this affected ALL the country, not just the South. (Think Chicago, for instance)

Hi rhmasseyii, so this is a good point that I like to make with my students (it being Kansas.) So the significance of Brown v. Board is the ending of "legal" segregation. Most of Jim Crow laws enforcing legal segregation were in the South. The North was definitely segregated, but just not legally segregated the way the South was. Looking back Northerners like to consider themselves to have been more racially tolerant and integrated (and they were to a certain extent), but social segregation and racial discrimination were very real in the North as well (think the Boston bussing riots.) However, there is no doubt that Southern states under Jim Crow regulations, as well as political and social intimidation that black lived under in the South, were really targeted by this ruling. Think of the attempts to enforce this ruling and the backlash it faced in the South: the Little Rock Nine, Governor Wallace blocking the door at the University of Alabama, Eisenhower sending in the National Gaurd, the riot at the University of Mississippi. The Brown case was really a combination of 5 other cases aimed filed over legal school segregation the others being in Virginia, South Carolina, Deleware, and Washington DC, and many think they put forward the Brown case because this was the only one of the 5 that wasn't in the "old South.".... I agree with all you stated and I understand your points. I try very hard to get my students to think critically, as I am sure you do. So, in a succinct video as yours is, it is difficult to point out all the critical ideas. The point I was trying to make is the word "mostly" would give the students the idea that segregation was going on in other places.
