    In todays episode, barbarians continue to do barbarian things, our favorite bear does a gamble that doesn't quite work out, Spain proves to be a pain, and we learn how to properly defend a fledgling nation. A horse is a horse, of course, of course, but sometimes it is also a good source of income. Will Spain prove they have learned nothing and declare war again, will Germany manage to settle ten cities before the medieval era? Will I ever stop posting these summaries? Probably not on that last one. But for the possible answers to the other two questions and more, turn in next time, same Ursa time, same Ursa channel!

    Seriously, one of the things that popped out to me in Civ6 was just how vicious the barbs were (esp. compared to Civ5 BNW). I have lots of game openings like yours except that when I do it it's always something like 8+ barbs spawning just outside sight range of my capital and the scout spotting my city just as soon as it spawned.

    Barbs on Deity are wild, my first Deity game I was at war with Babylon and was holding a mountain pass. Barbs rolled into Babylon from behind with 3 trebs and a ton of man at arms and razed all of Babylon's cities in like 10 turns... I did not expect to win the war that way.

    As a point of interest Ursa, barbs absolutely do NOT have a human player bias. The AI in general (barbs, city states, and full AIs) all have a bias towards attacking where they have the biggest combat strength advantage. (meaning units with low health or melee strength are preferentially targeted). Which is the biggest reason it looks like the barbs prefer to attack your units. If you and the AI both have a 20 combat strength warrior at full health, the AI will have the deity combat strength bonus and you won't, so the barb would rather attack you. As for barb behavior, it's coded according to three states the camp can have. If a barb camp is active (IE a scout has found a city, reported back to the camp, and the camp is spawning a unit per turn), barb units from that camp will move towards whatever city center the scout found. They'll engage units they find along the way, but if you run away they won't chase and will instead resume moving towards the city. Once they get to the city they'll attack whatever units they find, but will preferentially target the city center if possible. (Which is why, given a chance, barbs will ignore your units to suicide into your city center). If a barb camp is passive, it spawns a unit about once ever 10-15 turns (I don't recall the exact number), and those units will attack anything that wanders nearby. If the barb camp is destroyed, surviving barb units will exclusively attack the units and cities of the player or city state that cleared the camp. You can genuinely wander a 3 health scout next to a full health line infantry and have it completely ignore you, as long as the camp was destroyed and not by you.

  • @UrsaRyan

    @UrsaRyan

    7 ай бұрын

    Haha - so I both agree and disagree here! Absolutely they go for the weak target, and the deity bonus means that it any "equal" situation they will attack you and not the ai who are in effect stronger. But surely, that's a human player bias by another name?? If barbs are going for you more than the ai, I'd argue even if the technicalities are as you nicely put them, the net result is exactly what I'm saying. I mean I'm being pedantic but it's an interesting one huh = )

With a couple of holy sites in the core of my empire, I was going to start stacking the +8 gold per turn from routes with very little requirement to spread my religion further. It's a handy religion! Mosque probably for more spreads after and to unlock a building early, followed my inqusition to keep spain at bay!

    One other game mechanic question re: city patron goddess - does the production bonus apply even if you have nonspecialty districts? For example I tried it with vietnam, preplaced the first specialty district, but started with a thanh in every city - does the 25% apply to its construction? Then after the thanh is finished, does the 25% apply to the specialty district still? I thought this was a smart move, but it ended up not being very powerful 😅

  • @UrsaRyan
