@joao paulo I figure most people educated on both of those countries (especially Brazil) don't have any grasp on how good life can be on a develloped country with good welfare. I don't think, say people from Denmark, can understand what we call poverty either! They get that our poor kids don't paragliding on their weekends but they have no idea what going a day or two without food feels like. My uncle is swedish and I shit you not, when my aunt got cavities, all the knowledge he had on the matter he had got from a museum.

I remember watching this film for the first time back in 2010 during my college days and this particular scene got so stucked with me that every time Something reminds me of Brazil, this scene starts playing out in my mind. truly a masterpiece. To think that most of these people weren't even professional actors. They were cast directly from the slums of Rio, and delivered some of the most realistic portrayals of characters I have ever seen. As a Brazilian, this movie truly makes me proud. Makes me think we are riddled with artistic talent everywhere, just waiting to be found.

Yep. Watching City of Gods made me realize that maybe we are giving too much attention to Hollywood. Seriously, in this movie there's no actor that is less than absolutely excellent: this would cost hundred of millions in the US, yet it seems that this incredible talent is somewhat natural in Brazil.

Look up the acting coach for the kids. Amazing as well. This is what she recalled while shooting this scene. Fátima Toledo asked actor Leandro Firmino ("Lil Zé") to scare Felipe with a gun in a dark bedroom. She would've also told Felipe to think about his mother drowning to death. Famous for her method of extracting visceral reactions from actors, the coach states that "nothing of this happened" and that Felipe might have "created a fantasy". She states that she showed Felipe a gun and asked him if he knew what it was, then he replied: "Yes, I know, and this one is a toy". In order to make the scene look real, Fátima states that she asked Felipe to imagine a very strong pain, like a toothache, moving towards his foot.

It's unfortunate they don't want people to see the circumstances children and people are going thru in many parts of the world, I just think to my self how fortunate and ungreatfull kids are in the US where the government gives them EVERYTHING(education) and many are still complaining to their parents because they didn't get the new iphone, while in other countries they work just to survive, sadly there's children risking they're life's just to go to school. Many of you might not have a mansion, luxury cars or millions of dollars, but you know what you do have, a family or friend that loves you, health and a roof to live under, and if you don't feel great full for what you have, you don't deserve it, just remember unfortunately there is people living like in the movie

What a powerful movie. The tears from that little kid who got shot haunts me. Phenomenal piece of cinema.

I like how this film doesn't even try to romanticize criminal lifestyle and actually shows what it is like to live as gangster

The way the camera focuses on the pistol at 2:26 with the scared kid in the background has always sent chills down my spine. It's such a powerful moment.

The film portrays the reality of some favelas in Rio de Janeiro in the early 1980s when violence was very high, in Brazil there are not only favelas and the ones that live are not as violent as the film shows, I live in one, I' m of São Paulo and the big problem in the favela where I live is drug trafficking, but other than that it's quiet, in Rio de Janeiro it's heavier, there most drug dealers carry shotguns and everything else, many regions are dominated by drug dealers, the police aren't in between. Brazil is huge, you can come calmly and you will be very well received.

It's comic relief: a boy hanging out with the worst bad guys in the movies, and calling them "little friends" and still warning "mommy". I believe that the director's objective is to portray the banality that violence has reached and, at the same time, keep the viewer relaxed in the face of so much barbarity.

No cell phones, no social media, no digital bullshit addiction, just young people from the hood, socializing outside all the time, living for today and enjoying the moment, playing with toys, making plans for life and getting lessons from older guys about life in general - gotta love this movie!

Esse vídeo é um belo exemplo da riqueza de nosso português brasileiro. Somente um terço dos diálogos são transpostos em legenda, tamanha é a impossibilidade de tradução de muito do que é falado. É uma pena ver muita gente brasileira criticando o sotaque forte ou um e outro erro gramatical dos próprios brasileiros quando falam inglês, mas enquanto isso babam ovo de gringo que sequer consegue falar o "ão" ou Rio de Janeiro como falamos.

velho, como voce espera que um idioma de outro pais va ter uma palavra equivalente a cada giria falada em favela que é algo bem regional ? se é assim o inverso também acontece com filme de "gangsta", a tradução da legenda em portugues de longe consegue seguir a risca o que é dito, vira uma adaptação. completando, pra esse "ão" que voce menciona que é de fato difiicl de pronuncinar pelo gringos temos o "th" deles que é o inferno na terra pra brasileiro falar em ingles corretamente....

Bastante ignorância ufanista neste comentário. E me parece que vem de alguém que não tem capacidade de ouvir um filme em inglês e ler a legenda em português, pra ver a enorme diferença do falado pro traduzido. em filme de gangster então... principalmente ghetto americano... é a mesma coisa que tu falou acima mas ao contrário.

A diferença não por que as gírias são diferentes, é pq realmente o pt é extremamente complexo e pra piorar o inglês é bem simplista, logo fica muito claro em qualquer filme a diferença das línguas.

I usually don't recommend movies but this is one that I could watch again and again. I saw it when it first came out... But, even now it's still worth watching again.

Lil’Z had to be most intriguing portrayal of chaos and evil. Everytime he is on screen, some shit goes down. Always interesting to watch what unfolds

This is actually pretty low-tier compared to the real tortures and executions that take place in Brazil's slums (I've been living here for more than 30 years, I was born here and I've heard and seen lots of messed up shit). In Campo Grande (more or less isolated neighbourhood in Rio), the "traficantes" once chopped a kid's head and left it on a table in the middle of a public square. I used to play football with this kid when I was a child, before he got involved with the "movimento".

I've met a lot of kids like this back home. Kids around 11 or 12, raised in the street, with several shot and knife wounds. There are thousands like them all over Latin America. Just wandering the streets, no love or care from anybody. It is just sad.

This film never gets its credit next to the Scarfaces, goodfellas etc. It was the most powerful true story telling of Brazil and my first real look into that side of favela life. Using a lot of characters actually from the favelas etc was so authentic.

The tears were real, the man who played the kid said he was terrified of Lil ze

Every actor and actress in this movie deserves an oscar

A preparadora de elenco era uma mulher terrível. Ela fez o ator do Zé Pequeno perseguir e fazer bullying no moleke por dias antes da cena, ele se cagava todo só de ver ele. A cara de dor dele foi pq ela ensinou ele a imaginar q a dor de dente - que ele morria de medo de sentir -, se transferia pro pé dele. Genial.

This movie is honestly one of the most brutal ever, made even more magnificent as all of the cast except one, were non-professional. Exceptional talent displayed here.
