As Phoenix, along with other cities in the U.S., deal with a growing homeless crisis, there are differing approaches on how to fix the problem. In the final part of a four-part series, FOX 10's Justin Lum takes a look at what leaders are doing in one Texas city to address the crisis, and what one politician in Arizona is proposing.

    I lived in Phoenix in the 90s and never saw homeless people. Fast forward to 2021 and I became homeless myself at age 63, in my home New England state. After 8 months in an emergency motel, where every man I met was a felon, I am moving in to a small apartment in elderly housing. I am so grateful! I had a caseworker in an agency helping me fill out applications and the stars all aligned last week. Thank you for shining some light on the plight of the homeless. It is absolutely inexcusable this is happening in 21st century America. Our leaders should be ashamed of themselves, but instead they're all paid off, fat and happy as China takes over our country.

    The issues are people who actually care don't get the resources they need to help these people. People don't care as long as it's not effecting them but don't realize how quickly just a few instances of bad luck, unfortunate circumstances could have them in this exact spot. People who are against housing, ask yourself this... how easy would it be to go to your job if you slept in a tent tonight or had a disabling medical issue but couldn't get proper treatment? Are there drug and alcohol addicts? of course there always will be. Are there those who are never going to be responsive to help? of course, but I guess that means we shouldn't help anyone right? Ask yourself this... Ever had an issue with the government that took time to resolve? Perhaps it was getting a speeding ticket thrown out or a tax issue that took time to correct.. Now ask yourself if you'd have the same attitude if during that time you couldn't work or you did work but didn't make enough to live anywhere but in a tent on the street? How far away do you drive to your job everyday? Do you ride a bike or the bus to get there?

    Housing unsheltered persons may not be as easy as you make it sound. I am seeing that. The behavioral issues are enormous. Not only are the behaviors awful, but they feel very justified in being angry and destructive; after all, they are the VICTIMS. Do victims ever become winners; perhaps not when the pickings are this easy. Of course, many have incredible health issues on all levels. Is is too late for them? Maybe we need to get over what we see as quick fixes; housing (who wants to provide shelter to folks who are just going to tear it up), health care (health directions are never followed or followed up on), dental work (HaHa). This country has a growing problem and we are all transfixed with expensive political "non" solutions. It seems homelessness is now a new white collar local budget busting industry.

    Yup, I watched all 4 parts and not one person talked about any solution that would actually work. This has been going on in California longer and has only gotten worse and what are we doing? Just following their playbook. Until the real underlying issues are fixed it will never be fixed. Are they insane? Throw them in a hospital and lock them up and treat them. Are they on drugs? Prosecute them. Are they just down on their luck? Maybe a small percentage but they need to figure it out, or leave the state, or leave the city. You know what happens when you provide housing? You subsidize homelessness and you get more of it. More people are comfortable enough to just give up and let the state take care of them.

  • @carlgharis7948

    @carlgharis7948

    Yes. Because they'll live together it's a culture thing. Whether it's working illegally or working legally that's not important. Whichever the case be if you have a big family and 5 working age adults in the household even at say $9/ hour. Well 9 × 5 that's $45/ hour. So it would be like you yourself getting a $45/ hour job. Or you and your girlfriend each getting a $22/ hour job and getting an apartment together. And I am a white guy who had the explained to me by a Latino H.R. man who didn't hire me. As I asked really why the hell dose this place pay $9/ hour? And who the hell do you expect to find? And he explained the set up as I just explained. My response was well okay family values are well and good but it would seem as if you're using it to your advantage to basically exploit your own race sir. And I'm NOT taking this job for $9/ hour. This was 2019

    I've never met an American wanting to live in a house with his 3 brothers 2 sisters in law 6 children 2 elderly parents and some other guy your brother went to high school with. So 5/6 working age adults. Let's say $10/ hour. That's $60/ hour added together. So it's a cultural thing and math equation.

    This report needs to show how much percent of homeless are older, retired, metal illnes, disabled, drogadicts, people with jobs, etc, etc to know the real amount of what u have in your city or state. For example, if 30% of homeless are disabled then DONT NEED A HOUSE FOR THEM, what they need is to find or build a facility where u can put them as get assistance to have a better stay and caring; almost the same with older people that usually are abandoned or unable to get a geriatric with all the conditions, but its important to know the amounts of all thid people homeless so u can use proper budgets to give solutions every year. On the other hand, every state should check the increasing rent housing related to the increasing of jobs with a good salary, its not fear to see just an small amout of people getting better wages but at the same time taking advantage to have more investment to get profits affecting others.

Age disparity will be a large issue seniors may not have resources in the massive rising cost economy and require a respectable alternative to the streets. As a society this should be done early out of dignity to provide some for of economical seniors solution. The rest of the homeless population may simply need opportunity. Even those with a criminal history should be able to work their way back in to society if they show true efforts of change. Lastly instead of remodeling schools into fortresses...what about creating a home guard of retired sentinel force for honorably discharged members to serve again protecting the nations most valuable persons (or children) they could guard/patrol school property creating opportunity for members to serve out in dignity with an income and sense of worth.

Or did you missed an eviction wave and how having an eviction note on your name affects your chances to rent a decent property? Both addiction and homeless crisis is a product of corporate and personal greed. People going to a doctor expect help, not being hooked on something that will ruin their lives. People who live paycheck to paycheck don't want to be evicted because their landlord wants to increase rent by 50% and law prohibits him. But hey, "it is, how it is" right? For every lux apartment development, 10% of the apartments have to priced so that a low income household, or middle income single can live there, and fix the rent so it cannot increase while that person is living there. The other 90%, set the rent at whatever cost, and increase as much as u wish.

    Greed, Money, Vanity. Roots of the real problem. Therefore the real problem is in what the apostle John said in 1 John 5:19 We know that we originate with God, but the whole world is lying in the power of the wicked one. But Jesus Christ introduced to us the solution. He mentioned it in Matthew 10:7 saying: As you go, preach, ‘The Kingdom of the heavens has drawn near.’ Well, if it was near then, now -almost two thousand years later- is closer then ever in fact Jesus is King in the Celestial area now. But soon he will clean and govern the earth too. Just as it is written in Daniel 2:44, saying: “in the days of those kings -our time- the God -Jehovah Psalm 83:18- will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed. And this kingdom will not be passed on to any other people. It will crush and put an end to all these kingdoms, and it alone will stand forever. So, can anyone leave under this new kingdom. The Bible answers in Psalm 37:29 saying: The righteous will possess the earth, And they will live FOREVER ON IT. (On the Earth). Thats right the righteous, the people who turn to him, ask for forgiveness and even as an imperfect being STOPS conscientiously sinning. IS AS GOD SAYS IN THE BIBLE. ONLY HIS KINGDOM AND HIS ANOINTED KING JESUS CHRIST WILL BE ABLE TO FIX ALL PROBLEMS.

    The great Liberal push to have the folks who were institionalized for their own safety has been expensive, it would be a cheaper long term fix to develop communal housing and provide as needed for these folks. Every year we throw in a larger amount on the temporary solutions, when the solution could be funded every year and the necessary services provided. The reality is the folks in need of the services generally aren't in the work force and never will be in the work force, so rehab is a delusion. Society used to provide for all their needs, what happened? We currently expose them to more potential harm and danger than they would be exposed to in the old institutions, we can do better.

    The "Conservative" push has been jail because republican politicians new and old has been that they must be on drugs to give them jail to get clean or tell them to move on. Hell look at Ricky Lake's campaign website. What they fail to understand from their 2.5 mill dollars homes is drug use is only a small part of some homeless.

    I grew up in Iowa (a while ago) and I remember as an elementary school trip we visited one of the "poor" farms. Homeless folks, elderly folks could be housed on acreage and provided a place to live and to grow and process their own food. Of course, these folks did have some idea how to live decently and I know we have folks in homeless camps right now who would be able to live under the above circumstances more safely and happily than in their current situation.

    Republican Coronado Mayor Richard Bailey said there are no vagrants in his city at all, and he joined to describe how he has reinforced a no-encampment policy while still upholding the rule of law. Bailey explained that the city works with the police department and a homeless service provider to give the homeless only one option - to get the help they need. Coronado funds "reasonable" services to help those struggling get "back on their feet," but noted the city also has a no-tolerance policy for violating municipal codes. It can be done, but these cities are being run by Radical left wing democrats, they don’t have any idea in what they doing. It’s all the voters fault. You get what you voted for.
