Citroen C3 2017 (ENG) - Test Drive and Review

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

2017 Citroen C3 is the third generation of the popular French supermini. Citroen C3 competes with the likes of Ford Fiesta, Hyundai i20, Skoda Fabia or Suzuki Baleno. C3 looks fresh on the outside, and optional Airbumps give it an edgy look. But is Citroen C3 any good deep down under the skin?

    Recently me and my wife examined the new C3 at the dealer. Here are our personal impressions. Let's start with the pros: 1. The exterieur design of the shine trim level looks very good, in reality better than in the videos. 2. The interior design is quite decent, too. Very calm, stringent and clean. 3. The seating position is pleasant. 4. The trunk is big for a B segment car. 5. The car makes a good impression in terms of build quality. Door closing sound, materials, nice cloth, all that feels worthy for a small car. Here are the cons: 1. The dials look good, but those in the Peugeot 208 look better and are positioned higher, almost like a headup display. 2. The seating position in the C3 is good, in the Peugeot 208 even better (1.86 m tall driver). 3. The position of the very good central display is too low. The one in the Peugeot 208 is positioned higher. 4. Climbing in and out for the front passengers is more comfortable in the Peugeot 208 3 door version (the C3 sadly only comes with 5 doors) 5. The armrest in the front door of the C3 is too short. As a tall driver I can't put my arm on it. In the 208 3 door version it is possible. 6. The 208 has more knee room in the back seats and the backrest of the C3 is uncomfortably steep. 7. The loading sill of the C3 is about 10 cm higher than the one in the 208. It's a lot. 8. You can't easily close the C3 hatch by using the inside handle. That produces dirty fingers as well as finger prints on the outside of the car, especially in autumn and winter. Finally I want to say that the C3 is a good car. In the small car segment it's quite unique. But for me and my wife the Peugeot 208 is better although it has been on the market since 2012. We also like the more elegant design of the 208 better. We cannot make a statement about how the C3 drives. Our Peugeot 208 ehdi 92 from 2014 (same platform as the C3) has a great handling, a comfortable suspension, a silent and smooth diesel engine, a good sound insolation and a good torque which means you don't need to shift much. The diesel consumption is between 4 and 4.5 liters per 100 km (calm driver). Our final conclusion: The C3 will not be our next car. We are going to wait for the all new Peugeot 208 coming in 2018 or even go for the current facelift version, especially if Peugeot also skips the 3 door version (like many other manufacturers). For us as a couple and me as a tall driver the 3 door version is so much more comfortable. In addition to that you almost have a coupe feeling. We hardly ever need the space on the back seats.

    Thank for your comment Christian, especially for pros/cons :) As for me C3 pretty good car for those money. I like many things here from design to engine. I think any car it's own disadvantages and when you looking for the next one you should any way accept them :) Well, as for the first car C3 is one of the best choices.

    Hahaha! You had me in stitches with the introduction and the marketing guff that car companies put out! Looks like Citroen have their styling mojo back, rather than just reheating Peugeot designs and their interior quirkiness seems to be back as well, though whether that's good or bad is debatable. Another excellent review.

    I have the Honda Jazz, Hyundai i20 / i10, VW Polo and Fiat 500 on my shortlist. However, I like Citroens because they generally ride better. The Jazz is most like my next car, because I've had one before and it's reliable. But I like the design of the C3, but agree with you, with slightly better materials it could have been a much better car.

    The reason for the camera button placement and the non integration of the camera controls in the infotainment system is...obviously cost. I hate it when car manufacturers decide to cut cost on a stupid thing like this, I'd much rather pay more and get the bells and whistles then be in danger of crashing for trying to turn on the camera or the cruise control. But the big problem is the fact that the car manufacturers already ask way to much money for cheap gadgets. For 300E I can get 3 or 4 dash cams with better quality then the "factory one", this also goes for the navigation system/infotainment - a 7" tablet that does pretty much the same thing costs only 50E and they're asking 300-2000E.

    I'd consider car sharing :) But seriously, I bet the C3 is now a whole lot cheaper (especially with the new 208 in the showrooms), so it could be easier to swallow. Also, I don't know what's your budget, and where are you located, but the new electric 208 could be interesting option as well.

    Thats the right place to put the button to turn the dash cam on, because it punishes you for choosing to have a piece of tech that will get outmoded by 3rd party software overnight. Also for even being a dash cam. Privacy etc.

    The camera I suppose that has the button over there, instead of the main console, cause the pcb (circuits) that the button has to "reach" is there. Else there should be wire running from the console, up to the camera. As the camera is an accessory, this maybe not justify the engineering effort to do all the wiring etc. Most likely this decision was not taken by designers but production engineers and/or accountants.

    Awesome review again! So Marek I'm to close to buy the new C3. I am driving in town most of the year and I am making approximately 5.000km / year and maybe another 1.000 to 1.500km at motorway(for trips and vacation). Which engine would you recommend? Petrol with 82hp or 110hp or diesel with 100hp?

  • @MarekDrives

    Allani Mohamed The 1.2 liter 3 cylinder of PSA is some years on the market and has a good reputation. However I am not an expert, I am sure that this engine will go for at least 250.000 kilometers and probably a lot more, unless your accelerations should be continously to the bloody limit. I think that nowadays there are no bad engines in the car market. Of course there are differences, but any engine of well driven modern cars should last for at least 250.000 kilometers during about 12 to 15 years (and often more than that).

    A C3 without airbumps is no C3. I am going to look at the C3 at my Citroën/Peugeot dealer tomorrow. I will tell you about my impressions then. As a driver of a Peugeot 208 it's really exciting what Citroën has built on the same platform. Thanks Marek for your review. You will hear from me. One question in advance: driving about 17.500 km a year, would you rather go for the 110 hp petrol or the 99 hp diesel engine? In my 208 I have the 92 hp diesel engine. Have a good time, my friend.

  • @MarekDrives

    I don't know what is the cost of petrol/diesel in your area, and whether you drive mainly city or motorway. In Poland anything below 20-25k km a year no longer justifies a diesel. Price difference in fueling the car does not offset higher purchase price and maintenance costs for the diesel engine.

  • @christianschumacher6689

    Marek Drives Let' s say the total costs are pretty much the same per month. Which engine do you think is more fun to drive if you don' t want to shift much. I am a calm and comfort oriented driver. With my 208 diesel I need only 4 to 4.5 liters per 100 km. I always shift below 2000 revs. You see, I don' t like a "sporty" ride. For that purpose I rather use my mountain bike:-) Zero emissions!

    This 1.2 turbo has long gearing, so it's not bad in this respect. A diesel needs to be driven on motorways. It's pointless around town, and in the winter it takes forever to reach the right temperature.

  • @christianschumacher6689

    @christianschumacher6689

    7 жыл бұрын

    Marek Drives Those are good aspects. Long gearing also in the turbo petrol version. I don' t very often drive on the motor way. And yes, it takes a long time in my diesel until it is getting warm when the temperature is below 0 degrees. Seat heating is no luxury. You helped me a lot with your answer. Next time I will go for the petrol engine. I have one more advantage in mind: The petrol engine is more silent at lower speeds or at standstill at the traffic lights. What is your opinion about stop start systems? The one in my 208 diesel worked perfectly smoothly and shut down the engine below 20 km/h. I have heard that Peugeot had changed that for a more simple system. It shuts down the engine when you have really totally stopped. Is there any positive effect on the environment by those start stop systems? Are they good for the car in terms of durability of the engine?

  • @MarekDrives

    @MarekDrives

    7 жыл бұрын

    Yes, unfortunately they've changed it, and it's much more coarse now. You feel vibration, when the engine goes off, and comes on again. As far as durability is concerned, I wouldn't worry.

  • @difflocktwo

    Thanks for the great review! The primary reason for having the dashcam is to be able to protect the no-claims bonus as the insurers can now accept footage as evidence in claims. Many have lost out on their no claims discount thanks to accidents caused by other people. The bonus can be up to 80% of the whole insurance cost, so significant money (up to 600 Eur / year) for the insurance owners. The dashcam pays back itself twice upon first such a incident. Also, both Citroen and it's customers will benefit from the dashcam recordings in the future. As it's possible to automatically record the real accidents both before and after they occur, Citroen engineering can use this information in the root cause analysis to get more reliable and certain answer to what different factors could've been causing the accident. The camera can store HD stills and videos on its own internal memory. Citroen then just needed to implement 1) the AI/logic for determining "an accident condition" based on the data retrieved from existing car sensors and ESC, and 2) the mechanism to stop the recording after 60 seconds. This is easy and cheap even for the car makers :-) And now to the recording button placement speculation… The instant recording feature is mainly eyecandy. It could also turn into a buy-decision factor to choose C3 over Mini and other close competitors. Remember the cup-holders? The physical button and function is already implemented in the camera module. Implementing the same button and functionality also into C3 IVI system isn't thus necessary in order to market the feature. It would be really expensive compared to the value since it would require extra design, software, material and production costs. The time & effort needed for this kind of apparently simple feature is huge in the automotive industry. It would've needed to be designed and specified up-front in detail and involve the whole chain from tier-1, tier-2 to tier-3. This can take up to 5 years calendar time. The camera is also most certainly able to connect directly with iPhone and Android, that are excellent for handling the photo viewing, management, social sharing, etc. Implementing this functionality to the IVI wouldn't make any sense in this price category.
