Citroen C3 1.2 petrol review | Why this is the best version!

I've had a test drive (and uploaded a video) of the all electric e-C3 but for me, the 1.2 petrol 100bhp turbo version is actually the better car to drive and if you watch both vids you'll get a sense of why I think this. Hope we get this in Australia - I am sure it will be a 6 speed auto. Current car is a C4 Cactus 1.2l Puretech petrol with 6 speed auto - performs really well. It has been a great car. The new C3 attracts me with its styling and Progressive Hydraulic Cushion suspension.
Here in Spain the base petrol version is available for less than 15k euros. Seems like a bit of a bargain.

Honestly half of the car market should cost that much with base models 💀
When Tavares a few years ago advocated for cheap mobility for families, this is what we get now! He's following on his promise. Great job.
With the petrol engine and a much lower price, this makes sense. It works!
Wow. A new manual. Becoming rarer than a hypercar.
It's nice that the split fold rear seats are set up for right hand drive so you can load long/wide things through to the front and have one rear passenger. Indian origins the reason for that perhaps but great for the UK and Ireland.
Hoping to see you review the jeep avenger hybrid and/or petrol as a comparison to this and the Duster
Its a nice looking car for sure.Well done Mark
Whilst I’m a massive EV fan and might well get the e-C3 next, I can see why this petrol version makes a lot of sense for a lot of people, especially if you’re buying one rather than leasing. The price difference to the EV version is massive and unless you’re doing a lot of miles, there’s no way you’re going to make that kind of difference back over 3 or 4years. I do 15k ish miles a year and lease, so EV for me as the ‘fuel’ savings are huge (it works out cheaper/the same as the petrol over 3 year), but for most the petrol is the one.
Thanks for the good informative review. I guess around €24.000k for the turbo Max version. That will be around €3.000 cheaper than the EV version (with subsidies (Netherlands).
Great little car. This petrol version would be a great alternative choice for anyone who, for whatever reason, doesn’t want the EV version. The fact that it has a manual gearbox is great. The Satnav guy is a bit scary!

I like it. Its like a mix of volvo xc40, vw t cross and jeep avenger
What a great car
Reminds me a bit of the VW T Cross. Interesting what you say about the 6th gear. I would drop the "be happy" tags and the colour inserts. Don't under stand why electric is fitted with arm rest and ICE is not when the ICE car will probably be doing more longer journeys. Having reviewed electric and ICE versions Nobby, which would you choose at this moment in time for RoI driving?

This car has the new 1.2 engine, with timing chain. So no longer a wet timing belt. I assume it should me more reliable.
That puretech wet belt engine is still dragging the stellantis brand down , a lot of used dealers avoid the motor and thats never good for residuals. They might modify it one day but for now it blights the brands.
@HologramJones
Ай бұрын
No it's not, from 2022 it uses a timing chain, also the only engine that was affected was the 1.2. The issue also affected other brands using the Dayco wet belt (Ford, VW and many others)
@anthonybrown4874
Ай бұрын
Best they publicise it then though do they want to admit they offloaded a liability engine on consumers?
@HologramJones
Ай бұрын
@@anthonybrown4874 there has been a recall around issued by Dayco and then by Stellantis that if you experience symptoms to go in and change the belt. However, you must have had your services done by Citroen. Reason being that people who have done their services and on time,use the exact same grade of oil which is very important according to Dayco have managed to stave off the issue, however it is still recommended to change to belt. I don't think at first that Stellantis were aware of the issue since they don't manufacture the belt. As for the new timing chain there is a press release somewhere.
@anthonybrown4874
Ай бұрын
@HologramJones For all the owners who are buying used stellantis puretech motors it's impossible to be certain that the correct oil is always used plus in service the contamination by petrol and combustion products may well be outside the parameters first anticipated hence the requirement to halve the belt change as in service experience shows it breaks up clogs up sensitive engine parts and is generally to be avoided either through regular monitoring or really early belt changes at some cost. I have observed the belt st 67k on a 5 year old 308 it was in very poor condition and replaced with genuine peugeot parts they may have improved the materials but the principle is unsound using wet belts hence as you inform the move to timing chain. Best to just avoid.

Great little car but I understand that the pure tech engines like the Ford eco boost are big trouble particularly with the wet belt and heavy oil consumption. I gather they are called purecrap in the trade. All Stellantis group uses this 1.2, shame as it’s an economical engine and good on emissions. But I do love Citroen they have character. Nice to has a petrol version
1.2 gas engine = wet belt. 1.2 mild hybrid = wet chain.
I am currently looking atRenault Clio,Dacia Stepway, Hyundai I20 and the Suzuki Swift all around the same price. However I am shocked to hear the MPG on the C3 7/100kms is far too high for a car of this size and on that basis I would not choose one.

This engine is awful though and only time will tell if the chain won't break apart like in the 1.6 puretech and 1.5 HDi. A shame, really, because the old 1.4 HDi was known to be quite tough. I'll probably buy a Dacia Sandero, even though I've always loved Citroën.

I just hope they made significant changes on that little petrol engine because it's complete garbage (wet belt drive, enormous oil consumption etc)
not a great engine, the rubber timing belt breaks down due to its wet belt design. The oil breaks the belt down and the tiny particles of rubber clog up the tiny oilways causing engine premature failure. Changing the timing belt every two years solves this problem along with regular oil changes.
Around 40mpg ? that's dreadful. My current 1.2 c3 does 55mpg mixed driving without trying and 60mpg on a steady A road run.
I never really get the obsession with flat floors in boots. Unless you are carrying small but really heavy items all the time, like what? Gold bars? Its better to place items down into boot. They dont fall out when you open boot. And lets face it , you carried the item to the car and then lifted it to waist height.
