Citroën XM Barn Find - Pre checks before first start up in 20 year. Is that water in the engine?!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This is special!
A Citroën XM 3.0 24V arrived at Seaside Garage.
This is a joint venture project with @BilklubbenPodcast
In this video I do some pre checks on the engine, Is it stuck? how does the oil look? what about coolant? and can I get some pressure into that famous Citroen suspension?

It´s time for some really important safety info. Besides "never crawl under a Citroën", Hydractive makes this VERY dangerous. If you had gotten it to raise with your drill. It would immediately crash down if you opened a door or hatch or turning on the ignition. With the Hydractive system not activated you are only pressurizing the wheel cylinders/spheres. When turning on ignition or even just opening a door, it will hydraulically connect the non-pressurized center spheres to the wheels. And trust me, it will fall down almost like you dropped it. The other way around (when it´s working), it may jump up if it was put in to lowest setting without engine/ignition, but more on that later. Just be aware of that you want to know these things about Hydractive. When lifting a Hydractive, I always make sure to have all wheels not being able to touch ground. I have documentation you may want. Can I send you an email on the address you have at the about page?

Enjoying the videos on this gorgeous car. Used to sell Citroens in the late nineties and remember the dreaded security key pad ! Hope you get it running . That engine with the 24 valve head sounds great . Remember a trade we had in Peugeot 605 sve 24 .

Whoever owned the Citroen since new had bought the very best at the time, and loved it enough to store it in a dry place. Like many, no clue on how to properly store an automobile long-term, it's always an effort getting one started again. I personally stored a new Mercedes while overseas for a year, and this caused expensive problems.

under the backseat, there is a ca 5-6" round rubber pad, if you remove that, you get access to the lid were the fuel pump and fuel messaging device is located, and unskrue it, it comes out as one unit. then you have somewhat god access to the inside of the fuel tank and the fuel pump 😀 to see if the hydraulic system have enough fluid, you need to somehow convince the car 😋 to raise to fully op to see if there are enough . there is a float glass on top of the LHM tank and the flote needs to be between the to lines on the glass when fully raist. hope it helps you and make things easier 😀

I still think (never owned 24v) that the issue with the cams does not ruin the engine but it will cause rattling sound and ruff running, it’s just annoying to deal with. I’d say that the stuff that came out was old fuel if it was water it would have been crystal clear. How much oil did it take? There were upgrade with the oil pan that reduced capacity from 6.6l to 6l. The older design could cause oil surge. If I remember right, the keypad operates both ignition and the fuel. If code is disabled the light in the pad switches from red to green as soon as you turn your key.

The keypad is nearly identical to the one I have in my 1995 306, and that just cuts the spark. Although maybe they did it differently for such a premium car.

Sorry mate but if it has the early rockers & they collapse it WILL ruin the engine...I have 1 in my Alpine...gold coloured rockers are the updated with the ceramic pads...grey rockers are the old style & will cause problems.

Hi, Very nice videos ! A few details about your previous video : take care to the immo keypad, push the door at the center only and gently. It's fragile and difficult to find. The noise you hear inside is the inside air temperature sensor for heating. Clean it up and add a drop of oil on the axis. For the ECU, you can try 3 codes, after 3 failures you will have to wait for about half an hour before you can try again.

@@SeasideGarage it remained that way until 2000 ! In 1997, the remote control allows immo unlocking without typing the code on some cars.

Hi, many thanks for the upload. When you put in the code if it is wrong on some cars there will be a time limit before it will take another try. This time between code entries increases as wrong entries are tried. So be aware of this, but I DO NOT know if this will happen with the XM. Again many thanks from Nr Liverpool UK.

The XM had to be a special car as it followed the wonderful CX which itself followed the groundbreaking DS. I grew up around those Citroens as my Dad had a GS and GSA which I regularly drove. I also drove a CX but only managed to sit in an XM in a garage. A fantastic car! I look forward to watching your progress with this one.

Oil filter is down front beside the altinator below the dip stick.. You can tell if the engine has been modified by the colour of the valve gear on the front bank. Original valve gear is a grey shade of colour but the modified valve gear is of a gold colour .. when the original valve train wore it did virtually destroy the top end ..

Some cars with the keypad immobiliser, the code could be overridden by unlocking the car with the remote control and starting it within so many minutes. I think it was the case with the early Peugeot 406.

The stuff in the bottom of the engine wouldn't be old fuel, that would mix with the oil rather than separate, the other is that being fuel injection it's unlikely for fuel to leak into the engine anyway, that's usually a carburetted engine kind of problem, as for why the water is in there, I'd be looking at headgaskets, a common issue that can let the water escape from coolant into oil passages...

  • @SeasideGarage

Very likely cause for sure... I was thinking fuel because maybe its a non runner because of lack of spark, so maybe someone had been cranking it without it firing but still fuel would be sprayed in? could be so many things, but its worrying for sure... Ill stay positive!

@@SeasideGarage I think it can be a little of both but the heat cykling is probably a a catalyst. Most brands I have worked on suggest changing the coolant every 2 years though so 20 years would be pushing it either way.
