Citroën CX GTi | 393.000km.. must be reliable ?!
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
This is a 1989 Citroen CX 2500 GTI.
Its been off the road since around 2007 and I got it really cheap!
But is it worth saving? And how bad is it?

I was driven to school twice a week in a CX, roughly in 1980/81. I was fascinated by the speedo, and how you couldn’t feel it when you went over a ramp. If this was my car it wouldn’t be a project it would be a daily driver. Just put more km on it and enjoy.
OMG! The Citroen CX is one of my favorite cars! I really love her! Excellent choice : I can't wait to see more videos dedicated to this beautiful car ... and I hope you will be able to fix it!
Wow, that seems to be a great project! I suspect it had been used mostly on highways on very long distances at constant speeds, which is like wellness for the car. This would explain why it is in such a surprisingly good condition (and why the steering wheel, break and clutch pedals look much better than the gas pedal). A few years ago I came across a grey CX in Budapest with even more mileage, but that one looked really rough, the sunroof area was covered with duct tape due to similar issues :D

My thought too... just first gear, 2,3,4 and 5 for the rest of the day.... ;)
I love the seats! Great looking car, especially when it's parked up and the suspension is down. I reckon that paintwork would come back around with a good cut and polish. My first car was a burgandy 1974 Mini Clubman. That colour was well known for going like that in the sunshine.

Yea low down it looks sooooo cool
The phono jack sockets are so the rear passengers can use headphones. They cut the sound to the car speakers. Fitted to the higher spec later CXs. Enabled my children to repeatedly listen to Fantastic Mr Fox and others as my CX DTR Turbo 2 effortlessly ate up thousands of miles on trans European trips. That was in the late eighties, still miss that car.
Gotta love a CX. That one looks like a great place to start. Very nice. The interior must be worth more than what you paid for the whole car.
Hi Seppo. I've never been a big fan of Citroen cars, but I truly admire your bravery with them. For me, I look forward to seeing the Mihari on the road. Huge respect and best wishes from me and my Trabant in England 🇬🇧
This is going to be a fabulous car when it has been brought back to life. It's a lovely colour and the interior will look wonderful. I look forward to seeing much more of this!
Because you barely apply any force on the brake pedal the rubber does not wear as much as a normal car. The Jacks in the rear are headphone connections and an extra 12v connection and intended for use with the handlamp in the front. The suspention will not suddenly drop. This would make driving a car with this suspention a real gamble. Nice project! 400k km's is a nice number but these engines can handle 600k pretty easy. Enjoy!
Oh dear, cool got it's name from this car! Waouv - and even though you never over-polish/repair your cars, which i kinda like, this one deserves close to the full monty. Couldn't you get some car-detailer-sponsor, and maybe also a panelbeater, or Citroen Denmark to help you. This wonderfull design-icon deserves a lot of TLC, and a lot of videoes, where it just gets better and better!
The CX is my favourite Citroën, especially the Series 1 with the stainless steel bumpers, but I would'nt mind owning a Series 2 either. I am very happy with my BX too, by the way.
The good stuff keeps coming. You really have exceptional taste. Like it!!

True!
What a great find, I am amazed how solid it looks, these rotted away very quickly in the UK, I remember a friend had one in the 90's, the ride quality was fantastic!
I once had a Bx 1.7 non turbo diesel. And it had done 300,000 miles. What I noticed about it was the engine actually became more refined with the mileage and amazingly comfortable. Old skol Citroen's were so good in their day.
You absolutely must bring this car back to its as new condition. I have to agree with you, I think the CX is both a better looking and better car than the DS, as it really should be considering that it has 20 years of development of both the DS and the SM behind it. It also has the Diravi steering of the SM which, once mastered, is an absolute joy to use. Have you got the covering valances for the rear wheels? Other than the sunroof, which is a well known Achilles heel on these cars, I think you have a pretty sound body to work with, while the underneath condition is looking excellent. I can’t wait to see you begin work in earnest on this beautiful machine, for me it’s the absolute high point of 20th century saloon car development.

Looking forward to you starting on the CX, I have owned a 1989 22 TRS for the past 12 years and I absolutely love it, gets lots of attention wherever it goes. Still love driving it .
When I was a schoolboy of 14 my boss had one of these and I was so starstruck by it , it was fully loaded with such great technology for the time and so luxurious for the era 😍 on quiet days in cafe during summer he would get us two kids to wash & Polish it 😁 it was never a chore and I would have cleaned it for free just to sit in those leather seats 👌🏻.
Very nice acquisition, and thanks for showing it off! Your collection is growing quite a lot, hope it's not overwhelming.

Totally agree that the CX and SM are the best looking Citroen cars. The car you have here is so beautiful inside. Can’t believe how great the condition is.
I've been watching a bunch of your videos while I work on a 1999 BMW R1100gs I just purchased. You do great work thanks for sharing!
Dear Mr.Seaside.... have no fear for the CX!!! I have seen enough of you to know you will like this car,AND THAT YOU WILL LOVE IT!!!! The CX is NOT difficult to work on, it is the best drive EVER, and not expensive to run.... If you have trouble fixing it tell me in the vids;I will help you, also with parts when needed.... The thing is that the trim, seats, plastic etc. are fragile, but the engine, suspension, gearbox, brakes and so on are TOP NOTCH!!! You being a technician;admire the suspension and the ‘chassis’..... (it is a subframe connecting the front- and rearsuspension;hence the stability!!!) There is many specific things about a CX..... for an intelligent handyman like you this car is a treat!!!... not a worry!!! In the CX electronics are easypeasy compaired to nowaday’s cars..... and rust can be fixed.... Keep an eye on the 4.75 mm hydraulic lines;they are crucial (and high-pressure) to being able to drive the car.... but you can make replacement pipes yourself, tools, tube, rubbers, everything is for sale.... for decent money.... I have worked on CX’s very much:I KNOW you are capable of fixing this car.... believe me you won’t regret it!!! Kind regards,Henk Tulp, the Netherlands, feel no hesitation to contact me for help.

So cool! And it really looks like it’s worth saving - amazing. And the interior looks really really nice
Hi! It looks like the paint is Rouge Delage, it's the same reddish color as on the black/red 2 CV Charleston. It's really rare on CX, and would look just beautiful if polished up! 😊 👌
Fabulous project and like you say probably the best looking Citroen and the best model. Even has a CX number plate! Superb interior too. Please please get this project underway soon. Great channel by the way.
Oh man, such a pretty car, and the interior is superb!❤
My DS had 357,000 miles on the clock when I sold it. The CX is one of my dream cars.
I had two of those back in the days. Loved them.
Mine GTI Automatic had 520.000km on the clock when I sold it! These engines are very reliable, just the cooling system is a bit under dimensional. Interior is quite rare! But no electric mirrors and no electric windows on the rear is not so common. And, the Cx is also mine absolute dream car!
I also have a project cx gti.. and am starting on the journey to fix it.. I will check in on your progress!!
Oh my goodness, first the BXs (my first car) and now the CX. I grew up in CXs, my father had at least 8, most of which Safaris. Still my number 1 car to this day, so I'll be following your work on it closely! 👍 👍 👍
Exciting no major repairs the thing drives, dont store this away I can't wait to see more. this thing is classy interior.
The CX is my dream car too. Was my parent's car when i got the driving licence. Please dont touch the exterior. It looks great as it is! Recently I inherited a BMW 318d from my mother with 580 tkm. I replaced the start button and the gear leather, now it's like new on the inside. Incredible. But the feel of the beamer sucks ;)
Had an old 1978 Citroen Cx 2.3 petrol ⛽️ we bought very cheap to take us to work. It wasn’t as highly specked as yours but it was reliable and comfortable and solid wit no rotting & it went well & fast enough. It had the futuristic golf ball type speedometer & even though a very old car felt modern and nice 🎉. I recall my principal teacher in high school in Scotland had a even larger estate car version.
Those seats look so comfortable!
I have a 1984 CX 2400 Gti. It is an amazing car that I never get tired of driving. The suspension, brakes and steering (DIRAVI!!!) really works together like a well tuned instrument creating a driving experience like no other car. It is great fun to drive. Advanced front suspension construction with true center alignement and anti-dive geometry . The list goes on and on. The worst problem on this car is the rusted roof. Common on cars with sunroof. The drainage gets full dirt and the misery starts. My car used to have a sunroof. Driving after a rain ment a huge spill of water coming down my neck when I hit the brakes. Eventually I replaced the whole roof with a roof without sunroof from a donor car.
@SeasideGarage

Yea the sun roof is a big bummer..
And you bring another reminder in. I drove a lot in a CX 2.5 trs break (!) automatic (!!). Same engine, no gti. Mine ran on LPG and also had over 300k on the clock. It kept on cruising, although starting on LPG gave many times a backfire and then some air-inlettubes blew up. I had them in storage…. But it wasn’t driving, it was floating. And a SPACE in that break version….. Nice one Seppo. We’ll see it coming in yr shop one day
One of my favourite Citroens, the others being the DS and TA and the H van, this definitely needs saving.
Nice, crisp find 😃!
I love this car but the Turbo 2 was the ultimate. Incredibly comfortable and great looking seats.
Oh, how I love the CX as well! My dad had an early Break version, with the chrome bumpers, and the rolling drum gauges, with the same beige interior, and in lovely metallic pistachio green colour. It was a spaceship on wheels, you could hardly feel going 180 km/h in it, and felt like you're riding on a magic carpet... I'd love to have that car, despite being very fuel-hungry, but he eventually sold it to some Citroen collector, as far as I know. I've met a CX-owner recently, who had a diesel with over 700.000 km's, it's quite crazy what these old beasts could bear... They should really make new cars that could be used for decades, that would be way greener than buying a new electric vehicle every 5-10 years, when the incredibly expensive batteries will fail.
I have a model of a CX25 GTi and recall a friends parents having once in the mid-80's. They are amazing looking cars and I would love to own one. I have owned a BX and I suspect thats the nearest I'll get. Looking forward to videos about this car!
@SeasideGarage
Жыл бұрын
The BX is just lacking a bit in the comfort department... but its more "normal" which in some ways is better... ;)
Wow that’s a nice find 😊
That's in remarkable condition all things considering! I look forward to seeing it being transformed. I had a lovely 1987 CX 25 GTi Turbo 2 (registration no. D278 GYX) - it was hands down my favourite car of all time and I'd drive it everywhere for whatever reason. Mine was in Neptune grey metallic and I haven't seen many in that colour. The one main thing I didn't like about it was the poor ventilation. The XM V6 I had afterwards had excellent ventilation by comparison, but it wasn't in the same league as the CX even though it was a more practical car being a hatchback.
The fob you weren't sure about is the original infra red remote locking fob making keyless entry. Fabulously unreliable but if matched should work with the car. There should be a black dome receiver in the roof at the front for it..
Work of art on wheels . Well done to save it
Oh you lucky thing. My bro had a number of these but they're very rare here (NZ) now. I'd love one.
You sure thats a project! Looks ready for the road mate. Nice find!

The plugs between the seats are for headfones. Standard on CX GTI and Turbo II 🙂I collect Citroen. Have CX 25GTI -88, CX 25 GTI Turbo II -87, BX 19GTI -89, BX 16TRS -86 and GSA Pallas -80. 🥰 I see you also have the extra flashlight in front. I would like one of theese for my CX:es. The engines in gasoline CX 25 has the same engineblock as the diesel so it will last for 100years. :) Suspension is also no problems if no pipes are rusty and rubber octopus looking hoses are ok.

Nice collection! And headphones! how cool is that! A very good thing about this that I forgot to mention is a receipt for new suspension lines from front to rear and all the ones on the rear axle just before it was put away.... YAY!
To be fair to Citroën: GTI means "Grand Touring Injection" (originally from "Gran Turismo Iniezione"), so basically all the cars we know as GTIs should have been called something else, while a Citroën CX GTI must be close to the very definition of the three letters. ..but we went in another direction, and yeah.. Looking at it through that lense, a CX GTI is a little weird. But man.. I was a young man when Grace Jones and the then iconic CX commercials launched. This car, and the CXs in general, will forever be übercool to me. Will be looking forward to more on this, when it's time. Best of luck with it 🙂

YES... I need to look at the coolant system before winter actually... its full of water (not good for frost and rust) and I have a feeling that it likes to get hot... just a feeling though
One of the all time great greats. Turbo 2 is one of my favourite ever cars. Enjoy
Great find! Only ever seen tan leather on a Pallas or Prestige, air con as well (although I gather It's crap even when it's working). Shame it's a sunroof model, the death of many a CX. Like the DS, they're a strong engine, be interesting what compression it has, bet it's pretty good with the service history it's got.
I owned a couple of Citroen GS back in the 70ies, man I welded up a few big sheets of 0,8 mm metal on them. I even found a pair of long underwear in one of them that someone put in the kickbox to support it when they tried to fix the rust. Did they rust oh yes they did and they constantly broke down in one way or the other so I find it hard to believe that this car have ran over 390 000 kilometers. As long as they did not break down they where one hell of a nice ride. But if you did not live close to a Citroen shop you had to try to fix them yourself which I did. I even managed to find and buy a real original repair manual for them so was able to do some more advanced repairs. I still miss those cars but not the endless repair hours. I am guessing this model is not better and even today Citroens are special, I have one today too a C5 station wagon. I needed a cheap car real fast and there it was but on this one the heat system wont work ok and it looks it is going to be pretty expensive to fix it. Well I cross my fingers and hope it will work as a summer car at least and today I have other cars too so I am not stuck with it cause the situation changed for the better and I do not have to depend on it.
Looks pretty good, - longeron welding seams have swollen up quite badly should be adressed as a priority !
I would love to see you just machine polish just one door or one wing/guard on that car. Looks like it will polish up real nice and that will give you a burst of inspiration. I reckon that is a great CX for the money. The ones over here in Australia have really bad interiors, the sun wrecks the plastics and the seats wither. I am working on a 1985 16 TRS BX I got from th son of the original owner who had it from new. Cheers Steve, Sydney, AU

Looks like you really picked the right car to restore. The fact it's one of the last CX (and it has been taken good care of) prevents you to deal with the older version that didn't benefit from the good rust protection and reliability optimization this car has. Getting the last produced car is always a good move to avoid unreliability problems on most brands, but with Citroën it's even more important : for instance if I had the choice between a high end 1989 XM (yup, this model was realeased in France the same year your CX has been made) or a 1999 entry level one in a similar condition, I'd chose the 1999 model without even a second thought.
I agree with you on the Gti badge. Xm came in '89, not that it matters.

Another great car 😀
I think the item in the glovebox you were unsure of is part of the remote factory central locking fob.
The engines are reliable, but metal components and body panels aren't well protected enough against rust caused by road salts and rainwater.

Nice seeing a CX. Here is a short important thing to know: Don´t jack it up on the "space frame". Only use the jack point in the sills like any "normal" car. The "frame rails" can be damaged if you put the jack on them. (not sure if "sill" is the right word, but I think you know what I mean)
@michaelheimbrand5424
Жыл бұрын
Oh... That concerns the "frame" in the middle of the car. In the front and rear it's very strong as jack points just like any other Citroën with subframes. Just be careful with those beams in the middle of the car. The frame rails is for lateral support, not vertical.

Looks like it has the late type Prestige interior. Maybe that was an option on the GTI, especially if it was one of the very last models. Mind you with that mileage it could have had this interior fitted much later in its life. Do Citroen records allow you to look up the build specification? Patina is one thing but a couple of days with a buffer will have it looking more like a car that you have the incentive to work on. Lots of potential I think. Get that wheel off the back seat as soon as possible or it will leave damage that you won't be able to get rid of.
