I don't remember where I've read it before, but I heard that Bernstein's gift was meant to be a mezuzah, which is a tiny wooden box filled with scrolls with verses from the Torah inside them that you usually nail to the doorframe. If that's the case, then it's possible Emily wasn't as nice as Leland thought her to be.

a very interesting aspect i just noticed (you notice only when you watch the whole scene uninterupted: 3:58 the shadow behind Emily is ominously suddenly much darker than in the previous scene of her talking, underlying her growing discontent while arguing and showing that the tension between the characters is reaching its peak. in the next scene there are no words. only resigned mood in their facial expressions. especially hers. its over.
