I can't remember what place I called recently in 2024 and they played this. It was the first time I heard it, but there was a PSA in the 90s that had music that was very similar to this, so I had to look it up.

It's funny though, now that it's been used globally there's a subset of people who laud it as a great work of art, but it was only used because it was free. So there was no realistic way they could be paid for this, because Cisco would just switch to some other royalty free music.

They did get paid for it. Two guys made it in high school and then one went on to work for Cisco. He worked on this project and they let him use this song. They’ve made 4-5m I think over the years

Yeah... sorry about that. The reason was that I used an Alesis Midiverb II or III, specifically the 3 tap pan, to hide the fact that I was playing this live on a DX7IIFD and the notes would either cut off when I'd play unison patches and run out of polyphony or when I'd change patches. Solution: Plug it in mono to the midiverb on one side, R8 on the other side, stereo into the tascam, and go. Edit: despite what it says on WIKIPEDIA I don’t think the stereo version sounds bad, I’m simply explaining the extreme panning.😂

I’ve been telling everyone for years that this hold music is slick and now it’s a commercial! I’m vindicated!!

The deep lore on this song is amazing. "Among the best known due to its default presence on Cisco telephones is "Opus Number One" by Tim Carleton and high-school friend Darrick Deel, who recorded it on a four-track tape recorder in 1989. Deel went on to work for Cisco in building the company's first VoIP phone. When a need for default on hold music came up, he recalled the track he and Carleton had recorded and reached out to Carleton for approval."

I genuinely enjoy being put on hold at work thanks to this song. It always calms my nerves and sends me into an 80s daydream.

I dunno. Everyone likes it because it's so upbeat and whatever, but it brings back memories for me. I listened to this same on hold music for a total of 3 months, or 118 days multiple times during the day. Morning, Noon, evening, and Night. This was the hold music I heard every single day to call to check in on my baby when he was in the NICU. It was a very hard time for me as I was suffering from postpartum depression. This on hold music brings back sad memories for me.

Legitimately the soundtrack to my life. I hear this on an almost daily basis working in Motor Insurance and have been in the business many many years now. In a very strange way it is kind of a special piece of music to me for that reason but also has a kind of unnerving dreamlike edge to it (with those synths) like you are in limbo. It’s kind of special to me too! I used to work for an American telephone company when I was in university, and this was the hold music for interdepartmental calls. I loved calling legal because they would never pick up the phone and would keep you vibing to this. My life then was so different, not better, but simpler.

This is literally my favorite song LOL I could be on hold all day as long as this is playing. Currently playing this out loud at work.

I wasn’t even alive in the 90s and this is literally so nostalgic of windows 95 and existing and watching dirty dancing with my mother while eating all the 3d Doritos and drinking surge while simultaneously being wired on the school playground and trying to collect all the hit clips in 2003.

YES. Thank you everyone involved in making and uploading this. I had been wondering what it was for a few years, but just heard it on a call at my own job a few minutes ago. I found this video on my third try. Really lucky I finally got closure on this absolute slap of a song.

Yeah it's better in mono imo. Some people are saying the sampling rate should be reduced to match the low sampling rate of PSTN, but I disagree.

@@boiii3productions945 That's a perfectly valid opinion. You could argue that the artists created it in stereo 44khz, therefore we should preserve the original artistic intent by listening to it in that format. However the creators also knew that their audience will be listening to it over PSTN mono 8khz. OP's version appears to be mono 44khz.

@@raymontdabizach I did this and at the start it just sounds like an elastic band. 15 seconds in and it sounds like the Pokemon tower in Lavender Town. I couldn't listen to anymore though.

I've always wondered who made this; thanks so much, NPR, for your in-depth story on this fantastic music. Now I can listen to it whenever I want.

I am very excited to find this music on KZread 😀 actually I am from Kolkata India working in a KPO sector which handles US healthcare processes and I am in AR department so whenever I call Blue Cross and Blue Shield to get the benefits and eligibility of a patient I listen to this music on hold and started liking this chilling music and today I end up searching this on KZread 😂

I love how it gets even more trippy if the bitrate is throttled 😂

I never had the pleasure of hearing this hold music until I worked in inventory and had to call our distribution center and the company hold music is different, but when I got put on hold one time by the actual representative, I finally got the satisfaction of hearing it for myself. Has to be the one time I was excited to be put on hold.

Thank you so very much for sharing this. I remember the first time I heard it I was really blown away and wondered how I could ever find out the name. Such a beautiful & upbeat yet relaxing track. It was really interesting reading about the backstory that it was made a long time ago and then later uploaded as a test. Reminds me that even if you work on something and put it on the shelf, you never know how many people will appreciate it if you have the courage to share. Always loved hearing this when I'm on hold! Sounds like the music they would play during an 80's movie montage.

When I saw the super bowl commercial with the hold music, I recognized it right away. And knew it was Cisco

This actually hits hard when it kicks in lol
