Circuit Zolder OnBoard Safety Car POV
A lap at the Circuit of Zolder (Belgium) by the Safety Car. The Safety Car was driven by circuit director Harry Steegmans and filmed by me, during my track visit on June 23, 2022.
Circuit Zolder is a permanent race track in Belgium. It opened in 1963 and was designed by Dutchman John Hugenholtz.
From 1973 to 1984 it hosted the Formula One Belgian Grand Prix 9 times. Two times it was alternated. First with Nivelles, which hosted the Grand Prix in 1972 and 1974. Later with the renewed Spa-Francorchamps which was back on the calendar in 1983. It was intended that Zolder and Spa-Francorchamps should alternate the Belgian Grand Prix. However, since 1985 Forula One remained at Spa-Francorchamps.
Sad enough, Circuit Zolder became most famous as the track where Gilles Villeneuve lost his life after a crash during the 1982 F1 qualifying.
The layout of the Zolder Circuit was several times adjusted. First 3 chicanes were built for safety reasons. More recent also the first corner was moved inside, to create a safer pit exit and bigger run-off area. Funny enough, the pit exit is now where the original first corner was.

You're welcome. There will be a track visit reportage from Zolder too. Also an update about Nivelles. Unfortunately I was not able to visit Reims-Gueux and Heysel Circuit Brussels, because of car troubles. Hopefully later this year.

Personal comment, nothing to do with the racetrack, but many thanks for posting this video: Zolder! For many years I've enjoyed KZread videos of all kinds and this is the very first time the name Zolder popped up. Memories? In the early 50's I was sent from Vienna to Hasselt bei Zolder for about 6 months, courtesy of CARITAS, to put some weight on my tall, skinny bones. I stayed on the estate of Baroness Villenvagne de Vogelsanck and surely returned a few kilos heavier. Had a great time there, lernt Flaemisch in a few weeks, went to school and even went a few times to Zolder on shopping trips with the Baroness. Again, thank you for posting this vid, it brought back some wonderful memories. (As an aside; Jörn Großblotekamp, who is surely also a Belgian from the area and mentions the "good old days, may even have heard of the Baroness 🙂).

I actually wanted to visit Zolder earlier. A few years ago I contact the press officer, but no reaction. Then suddenly, I got an email from the circuit director who invite me.

What place of track was where Gilles fatal crash?

At 1:36 he hit Jochen Mass. He landed where now the chicane is. Behind the chicane is a memorial. You will see it in the video report next week.
