Circuit Protection - Tech Basics | Digi-Key Electronics

Ғылым және технология

Damage can occur quickly when electronic circuits are left exposed to lightning, electrostatic discharge or overvoltage and overcurrent. This video explains the various threats to circuitry as well as the devices designed and incorporated to combat transient conditions to prevent failure and damage.

I have noticed in commercial and residential appliances circuit boards damage from roaches. Why are these bugs attractive to circuit boards?

I looked into this after I read your comment and apparently they are attracted to the heat put off by the components on the board. They also like moisture so that's why they are more common in fridges, dishwashers, and washing machines.

Digi-Key - is it true that some insects and rodents are attracted to wire insulation materials having found eaten coatings around failed circuits in both electrical and electronic devices? Rats I expected this from but insects I’ve discovered puzzle the heck out of me. It’s not always they same type of insects either. I’ve found them both inside and outside of buildings and enclosures too. These evasive creatures drive me crazy when troubleshooting because I’m looking for design flaws or failures within a system or controls only to find out it’s nature at its worst!!! There’s a balance between ventilation and security within enclosures that frustrates me endlessly sometimes!! Airflow is critical but these creatures manage to access through any minute amount of space to gain access and it wouldn’t be bad if they were looking for moisture or escaping the elements but do they need to chew on the circuits & wires while in there? I really think they enjoy the taste of the plastic shielding’s around the wires especially the smaller diameter wires in the control circuits. IDK? Your thoughts or ideas to help protect in these areas? Or any sprays or materials that may detour nature’s friends. There are so many different species so the list could be daunting but any general guidelines would help me tremendously at this point.

@@MrWATCHthisWAY, rodents and insects are attracted due to the warmth initially, then rodents use the wire as a means to grind their teeth down to prevent them from growing too long. I have read that some car manufacturers, in an attempt to start using more natural products, have been using wire with a soy-based insulation which also attracts them from a food standpoint. I sent this question out to a few other technicians and engineers and unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a good solution for a deterrent. One engineer mentioned the best defense will be to use conduit and prevent them from getting to the wire in the first place. Sorry, we don't have a great, easy answer for you! However, if you or anyone else stumble upon some sort of spray solution please share the knowledge!

Digi-Key - thank you for the feedback. I kind of thought about the warmth and security of the enclosures but would have never thought about grinding of teeth on the wires. Maybe I should give them something else to gnaw on.lol...
