Cippo di Carpegna (Pantani's Climb) with Davide Cassani - Cycling Inspiration & Education
Спорт
Although the Apennines may not be as famous as the Alps to the north that's not to say they are any less of a challenge, often deserted their steep and irregular pitches are a playground of pleasure and pain. The problems of the sport may have been well documented but despite what we know today as a kid growing up watching the Tour and Giro I couldn't help but be inspired by Marco Pantani, his unique style grinding out a big gear, hands on the drops, bandana covering his shaved head. It was these moments in the mountains that I watched way back then that stuck with me, made an impression and ultimately led me to want to explore these mythical places for myself.
As a former professional rider and close friend of Marco's I was fortunate enough to be joined by Davide Cassani, now the coach of the Italian national team, to learn more about Marco's life and to experience the climb that he made famous the world over, in his own unorthodox style, as he tested himself time and time again to know if he'd be ready to conquer the Grand Tours on the short but challenging slopes of the Carpegna!
Special thanks to Tonina Pantani, Marco's mother, for her help and support.

Oggi 2 giùgno festa della republica sono stato al Cippo di Monte Carpena ,pensando al povero Marco ho pianto perche chi sputa sangue onestamente per vincere in questa società non va più di moda .Grazie Marco
Davide Cassani here in Italy represents our inner guide, not only the national coach.. always a simple person, humble man, an unreachable cycling expert and we really love how he is working in our country with the national team. It's impressive how you can transmit sensational feelings, historic information, cycling motivation and showing some of the most beautiful places in the world with some cameras and two songs...don't stop your job guys, this is the right way to increase cycling community in the world. Now I wait a tribute to Michele Scarponi!

I believe we never saw him at top condition because of injuries and forced interruptions in training. His potential was far far higher.

@Minute Man was just like all the others. Were bad times from this point of view and cyclists were the weak aprt of the business, used and thrown away. It is very sad that he didnt get the recognition he deserved.
Almost 14 years later and still a tribute that loses none of its impact. Beautifully presented and no better companion than Davide Cassani to tell it. One of my favourite Col Collective videos, ever.
I watch this video every couple months or so. I think this is CC's best one.
Pantani, climbing God. This is pure inspiration like the man himself.
A very respectful tribute. These videos are getting better and better!
Hi Mike, I rode this climb back in 2015, I'm so grateful to have had the opportunity to do it. Thanks for the great video!
at 5.00 min: write on the side-road: "QUESTO E' IL CIELO DEL PIRATA" means "THIS IS PIRATA'S SKY" ..goose bomps
"I climb so fast to make my agony shorter" I love that! Great video
Grazie per il ricordo di un MITO !!
Bravo Mike, very well done tribute to a modern day tragic hero. Tears at the end as I recall his fluid elegance on the toughest terrain while thinking ‘damn, if only......’ Grazie Davide also for bringing a personal insight to Marco Pantani.
masterclass for all time❣❣❣❣❣❣❣
Always go to tears, when remembering Marco. Thanks for little homage.

Hi. For all those ones who have felt and clearly identified the enormous and huge talent as a rider that belonged to Marco Pantani, as I have, this is a brilliant and splendid tribute to him. So thanks a lot Mike for having relased this excellent and so professional video, as the rest ones you have been editing for years. Yours are the best cycling videos I´ve ever seen. The passion for this sport and the love and admiration as a rider for Marco will come with me until the last day of my life.

Thank you truly for your appreciation. Marco was an inspiration to me as I was growing up, a sad loss that I still reflect on regularly almost two decades later. I filmed Fauniera last week. Marco lives on in our hearts. Always 🕊️
Thank you for posting this great video. I felt really emotional while watching it. We love Marco, he'll be in our hearts forever.
Giusto tributo per un uomo che ha dato tutto al ciclismo! ❤ troppo grande Marco per dare spazio anche a pochi stronzi verso milioni di persone che hai reso felici e ancora oggi ti ringraziano!
A truely beautiful video
RIP Panta - Great tribute.
Thank you Mike for another great video & tribute to Marco !! Also Thank you also Davide for your remembrance & sharing your memories. I also remember well watching you ride as those were all great years. All we really had in those days were Winning Magazine & World Cycling Productions VHS Tapes to watch & watch over & over. Thank you both
As always your content is of the highest quality. This channel has motivated me to want to ride many parts of Europe! Keep them coming!
Incredible video, very moving. Marco is a real legend.
Thanks Mike and thanks Davide, and above all thanks to Marco, priceless stuff!
When you ride the climbs in Italy you'll appreciate the sheer athletic ability of Pantani
Wow, that was quality Mike. Thank you.
Really loved this video!!.. My husband got me into cycling, first by watching the Tour de France. And I followed a bit of Pantani’s career. Really liked watching his cycling. Pity he is no longer here with us... Life is like that, isn’t it?... We ought to enjoy it while we can!... Thank you for the ride!..🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🌷💐🌺💕
This video captured the love with which Il Pirata is still remembered, and always will be. Clearly Mike feels the same way about Marco Pantani, as the rest of us! Done in exactly the right way--not overflowing with commentary, but the right things said at exactly the right time, and wonderful music to accompany the coverage, and Davide as the guide was an inspired choice. Another mountain to add to the bucket list.
I remember spending time in Italy many years back and cycling is engraved in Italian culture...beautiful culture, showy and style based yet it has appreciation and warmth. The Alps are breath-taking: GO !
Fantastic video!!!! I love panta!! 😢😢
This is just amazing
Fantastiv video,for all cycling lover´s, like myself!Thanks.
Your videos are awesome, I have no words. Respect!
goosebumps, just goosebumps! superb production!
What a beautiful film. a wonderful climb and in respect to a magnificent cyclist.
What a special video, thanks
Great video as always, that climb is like a Rideable Museum to Marco....I wish Cycling was idolized like that here in the States.

Yeah, another great video Mike.
Wow. Amazing video .you and the team should be proud of this job. I did know anythimg about this climb and its history even I follow cyclimg so now I have this feeling I have to go there at least once and that's thanks to you . Congratulations
Classy tribute to the legendary pirata
I have the same anticipation of a new Col Collective video as I do with a new series of game of thrones. Thanks Mike and Team👊🏾

that was great loved it col collective
Great Channel! Great sport!
A super and moving video. I will be doing the climb for the second time on Wednesday. I agree with many of the sentiments of the film. It is a soulful and magical place. It is likely to be deserted when you do it and you do have a sense of Marco's isolation. In some ways it is a sad place given Marco's life but also a magical one where you can pay a little respect to your sporting hero regardless of the drugs and the darker side of professional racing. If you are in the area check out the Montevecchio climb where there is another memorial (but please don't lean your bike on it when taking photos like some were doing today) . Thanks for the great film of a great climb and a very special cyclist
Amazing video!
thank you.
Great!
As ever, a great video from the Col Collective, as well as being a heartwarming tribute to Pantani. My only criticism - the text on the subtitles is very small and disappears quickly, otherwise loved it!
Heartbreaking
God Bless the coffee break.
Try to ask about Marco Pantani to an average italian guy who follows cyclism, like me. Talking about Marco brings us tons of memories, but it also gonna be sooo sad. Marco made us fell in love with cyclism. There are other riders who were better than him, we use to say 'Fausto Coppi is the strongest, Eddy Merkx is the greatest'. But, in terms of emotion... Marco Pantani will always be remembered as The One. But, after the doping scandal... we destroyed him. We bring him to depression first, to drugs later and to death at the end. I think everyone of us is responsible. Marco, we miss you. ❤
Mike I love the videos with the personal insights as much as the ones with the spectacular scenery. Can you PLEASE increase the size of the banner font very tough to read on a smartphone. 👍
just imagine pantani training on this very climb...true legend.
Good stuff
Ottimo tributo al Pirata; bravi.
Thanks. Good video. Will you be doing another preview type video for what you have coming in 2018?
For me the way the Italians praise M.Pantani is a double edged sword. This respect of course shows the admiration and love they still have for him - and this is great. But one should not forget that he was extensively using doping in his carrier and perhaps even helped himself with drugs through painful moments - and all of this shows somehow what difficult and even pathological personality he was. Not sure if anybody would argue whether this was heroic or not at all ! The way this all is being completely hidden here doesn't change anything unfortunately . So in this regard neither Pantani himself nor his fans are indeed honest to themselves . All these very big posters and signs of him on these climbs make me feel a bad actually.
Excellent video - makes me miss watching him. On a side note, do you have anyplace that lists your audio tracks? They're really good.
Pirata forever 👊🚲🇮🇹
🙏❤️🙏❤️

i think we'd all like to climb even our local hills like marco, if only haha
Looks like Davide is interviewing the host!
Rode this on a 34-25 most of the way occasionally using the 28!

Yep, crazy steep!!
Quando sorpasso qualcuno in strada con la mia Bianchi, grido dentro me stesso con la voce di De Zan " quando Pantani scatta non ce ne per nessuno " poi torno subito alla realta perché andavo a 25kmh😕
There are exceptions but the Appennini are much harder than the Alps on average where the latter have wider, better constructed roads with sweeping switchbacks allowing the climbs to be far more gentle like 4-8% and usually not much more. I go back every summer to central Italy on the coast and riding the very first upslope you get climbs of 12-15%. It can get as much as 18-20% pretty quickly though normally that is reserved for the hilltop towns. I did a century this summer from Rimini looping to Carpegna and back hitting all the local medieval towns including Pennabilli (epic!) and San Leo amongst others racking up 13000 feet of climb. The adjective in Italian to best describe it was "stracciante". Was doing a century or two a week like that for a month when I was there came back brutally overtrained only the last week or two I have started to feel back to normal. Funny because Carpegna the town is at 950M and it was 34' C or 90' F, hot but at the top of the mountain it was windy and I felt cold. Too bad its fenced in and there are massive cows with huge horns at the very top so you can't get summit views I was afraid of those large animals attacking me! One amazing thing about the area is the gelato and locally grown pastries and even fresh fruit you can pick off the roadside in places to fuel your journey. With rides like this you need to eat a LOT.
Was the Narrator riding a CAAD12? If so, much respect.
I climb so fast to make my agony shorter😔👍🏻👍🏻

Great video. A bit too much dramatic & loud background music IMHO.
First 20% lol... will be using a 32t lol
Mike: I noticed that your seat is slightly upturned, I am intrigued to know why this works for you.

I think it's just the shape of the saddle, the Aliante is quite curved which can make it look like it's nose up. I set it up flat with a spirit level so it should be pretty flat (I hope!)
@bitchoflivingblah
6 жыл бұрын
Just had a look at the Aliante saddle and if its level, end-to-end, it should curve up as seen in your video, i.e it is a 'saddle' with a noticeable depression rather than a 'perch'. I've been looking for a saddle which will keep me in one place rather than a perch where i tend to slip off. I worked out that proper seat alignment is required to make sure you are stable on the saddle but even so my perch Specialised Toupe, which has a flat profile isn't 'saddly'. It has a cut out for the perinium but that isn't limited by anything so you'd be more likely to slip forward or backward. Great video by the way. Also ,just watched the Girona trip which was equally engrossing.

The Aliante definitely has a noticeable curve, I think that's why I like the shape and feel of it. It keeps me in position better. Glad you enjoyed our Girona series, next up Switzerland! :-)
This video did not need a soundtrack. KZread soundtracks do more harm than good.
I'd double like this if I could . . .
Sadly was a tainted rider with drugs playing ahuge part of his success but to watch him climb was an almost religious experience..as if he had angels on his shoulders

theres also alpe dhuez 2004 when he threw his hat off on the time trial, i think that was a tribute to marco as thats something he did whenever he attacked.
Anyone here after Pogacar's numero on Tirreno?
song name?
Great videos, excellent production. Have you thought about doing narration as a voice over instead of during the ride? It was a bit challenging at times to understand you in between the breathing. Also, reading the subtitles at the bottom of the screen takes your eyes away from the scenery. Other than that, great videos. I just subscribed.
Oh a European Doper of the time. When are you going to do a video with Lance?
Attention! When Cassani speak italiano, the translate writer Is All wrong!
All this Pantani worship is a bit over the top. I mean he was a doped up cheater after all, not Jesus of Nazareth.
