    That stranger had to have lost his mother, sister, someone he loved to domestic violence. He didn't know this woman but instantly decided the only way she could be free as if the bastard was dead. Their voices were simply perfect.

    He did. It’s a true story about a friend of Hardy’s that did 15-20 years for the crime. He grew up in an abusive home where I think it was his step dad beat his mom and eventually killed her. He definitely saw his mom in that rainy night and saw the man that beat her in that trailer. PS: The guy it’s about is now married to the girl and they have kids together and everything

  • @firefighterchick

    @firefighterchick

    @joeymosteller6787 no it's not a true story. That is just a myth that has been circling the internet. There is a video here on KZread about the making of the video. Hardy does not state it about being about anyone he knows.

    You can usually tell who the women are that have lived that women's story when they react to this song. You can also see it in the faces of men who grew up in violent and abusive households who saw their mothers and sisters get beaten and abused. Many of the later wish they had done what that guy did because the abuse didn't stop until they either died or left. Maybe that guy didn't intend to kill that abusive man and only wanted to pistol-whip the crap out of him until he was well and truly broken and only shot him when he went for the shotgun... or maybe he did exactly what he planned to do. That's one of those questions that only him and God know the answer to.

    This hits very close to home. My brother is on trial right now and I pray for mercy for him. Hardy’s cover of Blurry is the next one you need to react to! 🙏🏻 A Rock is another incredible storyteller songwriter song of his that he has written that you would really like. He’s an incredible storyteller. It’s why everyone in country music wants to work with. He’s the best songwriter in the game. He’s so well respected in the country music community by fans and most importantly his peers. I love him so so much and I’m so proud of him for what he has accomplished especially here recently. The recognition he is finally getting is so deserved.

    May I add and maybe I'm putting to much into this so if I am forgive me.. But I noticed some very compelling things no one has caught. 1st she IS driving his truck ANOTHER MEANING TO "wait in the truck" IS fulfilled because he tells you she's been coming to see him for 5 years.IN HIS TRUCK! I believe she's waiting for him because she knows he's a good man. "On occasion" could possible mean the once or twice a week visitation allowed by the prison. 2) Look at the scenes of them walking away from each other. She is headed into the light/life while he is headed to a darkened cell. The hem of her jeans could be a symbol of freedom also, see how they kind of look like wings flapping but his are in chains...she is free completely free no abuser no harm on the other hand he is "a prisoner"(written on his back by the way) and has no freedom. He exchanged his freedom for her to escape her prison. Is he keeping a diary of their visits? Maybe. just my 2 cents.

    This is great story telling for sure. As you said, I too agree that country typically carries more story telling than most other genres, but they do all have them. Metallica comes to mind with songs like “One” and “Master of Puppets” where the videos helped tell the story. Old school rap was a lot about story telling and groups like Outcast and Eminem were great at it.

    I worked the streets as a LEO for a few years and did many years with State DOC (retiring 8yrs ago) now that I am not restrained by a badge I see things a tad differently. When the system, when society fails to protect those weakest among us it is left to rough men standing outside the rule of law to do what is necessary to preserve the peace, protect the innocent, and return civility. Some call this "vigilante justice" but for some the vigilante is the only hope to obtain justice.

    First time I heard this song I was driving on the freeway and had to pull over cause I couldn't see from crying so hard. He traded his life for hers. when he pulls up(a free man) she was in her own Prison from being abused. at the end when you see her walking away feet free of shackles and him in shackles it shows the exchange of his life for hers. and she also drives away in his truck free just like he drove in a free person in the beginning. After he pulls the trigger it cuts to her in the truck breathing a sigh of relief.

    To add to the other comments... he was not bad man, he was not an evil man... he was a man who saw a need, saw an evil and acted on that need and evil. He was a man of faith (evidenced by the court scene bridge (Oh Lord have mercy on me was not asked to the court system... it was a plea to God) and visibly evidenced by the cross hanging on his rear view mirror... was his action legal, obviously not based on the trial, was it morally just.... that is up to each individual for you cannot legislate morality... but for every victim of DV, he would be an answered prayer... and for every man... the story forces the question... "what would I do?"
