God is holy. He sees our sin - and he hates the component of our sin which is free, wilful, and knowing - our evil doing - but at the same time God also applies his justice to us with the aim of restoring us - reuniting us with himself. Unsanctified mercy is when someone seeks to offer generosity in the name of God to people while ignoring the person's sin - without calling the person to repentance.
