That story, from that book no less, was the first I've read of Howard's Conan. That verse at the beginning totally delighted and surprised me. I was hooked immediately. And have devoured as many Conan stories as I could ever since, By Crom!

Indeed! I wish Howard had used the verse device more.

Great Robert E Howard content! Oddly enough Morgan Freeman did read that introduction for the 2011 Conan the Barbarian film.

THAT is an impressive video. Thanks for the shout out. I got a big kick out of that original illustration from Weird Tales; it reminded me of the artwork in the early days of Dungeons and Dragons. I also enjoyed the review of that comic book version of the story. Too cool. Are you doing a video about "The Frost Giants Daughter" next?

THANKS, Randy! Yes, early illustrations-especially if they are seldom reproduced-are often unexpectedly intriguing. I'm not all that familiar with early D&D artwork, but can see what you mean. Those prototypes usually come from somewhere! And yes, I happened to still have my original copy of the Conan Annual #2, so I felt duty-bound to include it to be a more complete art review for "The Phoenix on the Sword." I doubt I will have time to make a video for "The Frost Giant's Daughter" even though I had planned on it. I have a houseguest coming in for the next couple weeks, so won't have time to do a proper video, since they take awhile to do the due-diligence research. Not only that, but I would want to include the Marvel Comics art for that as well, and I don't have a copy of that. The original comic and it's the Essentials reprint are both crazy expensive, and even the more inexpensive reprints wouldn't get to me by in time if I ordered through eBay or something. I should have planned ahead better! BUT ... whether you know it or not, you've just given me a great idea for a future video, if not a little series! I'll keep you posted once I put a plan together. So, THANKS!

Another fantastic video from you, really enjoyed the artwork. I really have very few preconceived notions of the Conan world having only seen the Schwarzenegger films many years ago. I suspect it is a greater hole in my fantasy reading than previously considered. I’m digging through Malazan at the moment and think Conan may well influence that strongly. Keep up the good work! 😁

Thanks! I need to read more Conan myself AND I'm not familiar with Malazan. So, I've got some homework to do.

Yep, I made the mistake of reading a Sprague de Camp Conan edition (review up on my channel) I didn't expect to like it, but I was pleasantly surprised by the last three stories in Conan the Freebooter. So I will be reading some more Robert E. Howard in the near future.
