damn this song just reminds me of my ex and how i was way too immature to keep her.. like i was always the kid everyone kinda made friends with until they found cooler friends... so i kinda just never had any experience w other people n all that, then i get some girl msg me and ends up going out w me. and i fucked it from start to finish, idk how we lasted so long but i was so shit bc i just didnt get a single hint never saw any perspective other than my own (until now where i can look back and see where i was wrong) and i made every mistake i couldve. i never really had a chance to really take in what was going on, and i felt like i didnt get a chance to prepare to be a good boyfriend. :( the whole time i was just in fear of her realising im completely winging it and have no idea im just trying to be nice bc i loved her. fucked up not gonna lie. wish i could go back in time and change and be better.

Just hit me. This movie is about two people who are of different times, both perfect for each other and unhappy. They meet each other but understand each other and how it will never work out. I watched this seven years ago as a 21-22 year old and thought Lost in Translation was about two people who had trouble coping with what they have and found happiness through a random act of fate. I'm 29 now and I realized my original idea was too complicated. Now, I think this is simply about exploring one of life's greatest tragedies: Finding your soulmate at the wrong place and the wrong time. Much more hurtful is the fact that you both can't have each other. If living means you slowly learn to understand what life is all about, then finding the love of your life when it's too late doesn't make sense, its meaning lost in translation.

the final kiss is my favorite scene in the whole movie -- not the kiss itself but the way they part ---- like, bill murray looks over his shoulder then just straight up walks backwards; it's the last time he's going to see her, the last time she's going to see him. But they got this look on their face like, he's making sure she doesn't break down n he doesn't have to run back, that regular ol checking in expression, and she realizes that n just breaks out into a full smile, n he gives this smile back like, yeah, you still got it. you're gonna be just fine. You can't control your life, but where and whenever you can, do it with style. You don't have to be on top of everything to be okay. Sometimes okay is just a backroom and a cigarette away.

You know what i like that you appreciate movies and hold them in high regard but it is dangerous when a person invests in movies/games, music, books more than in his actual relationships/love and experiences. I used to be like that romanticising someone's fictional stories of love and comparing it to my failed endeavours. It was as if i enjoyed suffering, pain and bittersweet memories of "what if my love worked out", i would be like them. Through years i learned my way around women and after many mistakes was able to have a year+ relationship. And damn that feels good man to be invested into something real and learning to enjoy the moment as is, not comparing it to any movie, not trying to be like in any other romanticized story, just enjoying your girl as is. Habits like this investing a lot into fictional love don't bring anything useful man, I just wish everyone who reads this to find a relationship and write your own story and hold that story in a special place in ur heart man instead of someone else's story.

I was 35 when I met her, she had just turned 19. We instantly connected and just like that she reignited something inside me that i had lost, passion. But it took several months of playing games on her part to see that I truly loved her. She'd leave and disappear for weeks at a time, and yet I was always there. I understood, shes young, she wants to live, have adventures... One night, after being gone for 2 weeks, she knocked on my door and walked in, drunk, tired, sad. She said she was hungry and opened the fridge to find an ice cream bar we had bought the last time we were together. She was confused and asked why I hadn't eaten it. I said " cause it's yours" And then I saw it in her eyes, she hugged me, started to cry, and just like that she knew she was home. We spent the next 3 years together, and I only loved her more. She was traumatized by her family, her upbringing. Her life was chaos and I did everything I could to bring stability to it but the drinking and drugs got worse, she was going 100 mph all the time. Eventually I had to leave, for my own sanity. I left town for a year and when I came back I learned she had been murdered in Downtown LA. There are some sordid details I'm leaving out but it's who she was when I met her, and I loved her regardless. Some people are not meant to live long lives, they are living a lifetime in a short span and then they are gone. She was one of those people

@mommymarz Thank you. It's been over 10 years now, and I still think about her and how tragic her life was, I wish I was in a better place at that time, mentally and financially, to have done more, but in the end I don't think anything would have changed because she was who she was. I remember thinking that our time was limited, so I shouldn't waste time arguing and just enjoy her company while she was around. I don't speak about it to anyone, I don't think my family understands what she meant to me, how importantly she was to me. When I mention her, they just say " Oh the crazy chick?" I'll never be that connected to someone ever again.

This film was a masterpiece. When I first watched it I didn't get it: I hadn't travelled. I thought it was a rubbish romantic film. But it perfectly encapsulates the feeling of being in an unfamiliar city for a short time: the fresh air and the excitement, the alienation and loneliness, the weirdly strong bonds that can be formed but that you know for sure cannot translate back to your home life. That goodbye they share: it's like a mourning. Although they could easily meet up when they're back home they know the situation and the location were as much to do with what they were feeling as the people. So they can never recapture it: the period is dead and finished.

After having spent 2 months in Japan, one of which in Tokyo by myself where I met my girlfriend, I have the hardest time watching this film. I was in Tokyo in March 2020, when COVID was starting to hit Europe very badly, and Japan was the last place I would be that would have a sense of normality for 2 years. Watching Scarlett Johansson overlooking the Dokomo Tower from the hotel brings back so many memories of spending the day in the park that it overlooks with her with the Cherry Blossom on the trees falling. I get to see her in over 2 weeks after 800 days apart, but man this film really captures the mood. Spending the days wandering through Tokyo at night, especially Shinjuku and Shibuya with all the lights, sitting on the metro watching everyone else go about their days while being the only foreigner on the carriage, walking through the tiny parks by yourself with the turtles in them. If you every go to Tokyo, this film will mean so much more to you. There's something about the place that just captures you, and is the completely perfect setting for this movie.

This song. I lost my fiance 14 months ago. Time hasn't changed anything. In fact, my grief is worse, because I am no longer numb with shock. So I sit here at 4 a.m. listening to this song over and over... crying... and praying... for him to please, please come haunt me. That is what this song is to me. The video of the film reflects this well, too. Having the most important person in the world... right there with you. And you have never felt more whole and complete than you do in that moment. But you know this can't be. This reality, this world will not tolerate it. And as you say goodbye to them, you miss them already. And then they are gone and you... you are alone.

If you have depression avoid this type of music for the time being. When you've surpassed depression this music is so much more Beautiful to listen to. If you have no friends, make friends with genuinely positive people, who encourage and love everyone. Remember, depression is a Mental state, even if clinical depression states its a combination of chemicals in our physiology it's still controlled mentally. If we want to.

First time I ever heard this song was when I found this video. I was going through a really bad time in my life and was feeling really lost. This was one of the most beautiful songs I'd ever heard. Still is. I wish I could be transported back to that winter night by my window watching this video while snow drifted down and gathered on my window sill outside. One of the few good moments from that year. Always look for the good :)
